[9:58 am, 29/04/2022] +REACH: 📢 Topic 📢

Going grocery shopping might soon burn an even bigger hole in consumers' pockets, as prices of non-cooked food such as seafood and meat is expected to continue rising even beyond this year as a result of global shocks, a review by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) showed on Thursday (April 28).

The cost of electricity and gas will also be pushed up this year, as the recent surge in global energy prices raises the prices of oil-related items. MAS said that overall, the surge in global energy and agricultural commodity prices will raise domestic inflation for fuel, electricity and gas and non-cooked food, which will in turn feed into higher prices for transport and food services over time.

💬 How have you been preparing for the impact of inflation and rising prices? Have you seen the recent announcements surrounding the disbursement of the $100 CDC vouchers? What are your views on the Government's response and support measures to tide through the cost pressures thus far?

The rise in global food prices will also pass through to Singapore's import prices, which will lead to higher domestic non-cooked food inflation over time. But the increase is expected to be gradual in the short term and more modest than global indices, MAS said.

Core inflation - which excludes accommodation and private transport costs - already hit a 10-year high in March. Both core inflation and headline inflation rose in the first three months of this year, compared with the last quarter of 2021. Higher electricity and gas and non-cooked food inflation accounted for around a third of the increase in core inflation, MAS observed.

As consumer demand recovered, inflation for discretionary services and retail goods also rose. This includes higher prices for hawker and restaurant meals, taxi and private-hire car services, sport services and other fees, cinema tickets and charges to places of interest. Import costs rose more strongly for travel goods and handbags, apparel and clothing accessories, and photographic apparatus and equipment.

1. This current inflation - fuel by covid pandemic, global supply disruption, Ukraine war, Countries restricting export of commodities like palm oil etc - has bring about an unprecedented spike in prices across many products eg. food, energy, transport etc --- inducing tremendous cost pressure on every individual and household.

2. Hence I suggest individual and household prepare 2 spreadsheets to track how we can cope with such cost pressure.

Notice that individual and household spend on "gut feeling" - and don't systematically track the spendings they make and how much they get in income every month.

Hence it will come as a shock to many individuals and household - when they realise they overspend and have been digging into their savings - if they don't keep track of their monthly spendings and income.

Only with such systematic tracking of their cash inflow and outflow - will people be wise - how they spend and how they should earn - to ensure they spend wisely and save wisely for their retirement and for rainy days.

[1:32 pm, 29/04/2022] +Eunice Chia: it's possible, my friend who has more than BRS set aside at 55 years old, says any amounts above BRS can be withdrawn quite easily....it's like Paynow to your account where you can make withdrawal.

it's also possible to have more than $1m in CPF....the power of compounding interest.

[1:41 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

*Preparing a monthy Income Spreadsheet*

Individuals and household should prepare a monthly (or yearly) "Income Spreadsheet" to keep track of their monthly and yearly income - to ensure the money they earn can finance their monthly and yearly expenses and keep sufficient monthly savings for their retirements or for rainy days.

Income Sources could be :-

1. Salary

a. Bonus

b. Allowance

etc.

2. Business profit

3. Rental income

4. Passive income such as :-

a. deposit interest

b. bond interest

c. insurance payout

d. dividends

e. sale of capital assets - eg. shares, insurance mature, properties etc

f. CPF payout

etc

5. Government payout such as:

a. CDC voucher

b. U save rebate

c. town council rebate

d. GST voucher

etc.

Income spreadsheet can be "moving Income spreadsheet" - where real moving income are kept live - month to month.

Or

Income spreadsheet can be "aggregated yearly income spreadsheet" - and average out - by dividing total income per year by 12 months. (This method is less stressful and surplus income earn every month can roll over to the next month).

[1:52 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

*Preparing a monthly Spending spreadsheet*

Spending spreadsheet should be prepared month by month - and should be a "moving monthly spending spreadsheet" --- to ensure that every dollar spends are recorded - and every items spend are recorded.

This will ensure individual and household have sufficient income to cover their expenses, able to track which item categories has increase in prices and there will be sufficient savings every month (as planned - for retirement and rainy days).

Spending item categories can be :-

1. Food

a. Groceries

b. Eat out

2. Power/Water bill

3. Communication devices

a. Handphone monthly subscription

b. Telephone/Internet monthly subscription

4. Transport

a. Bus/MRT/Taxi/Private Hire

b. Car owners - fuel, road tax, maintenance, car park charges etc.

5. Medical

a. Clinic

b. Hospitals

c. Pharmacy/Self medication/TCM

etc

6. Education

a. School fees/University fees/Polytechnic fees/ITE fees etc

b. Books

c. Miscellaneous

etc

7. Luxury spendings

a. Tours

b. Shopping

c. eShopping

d. Restaurant

etc

[2:12 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

1. The discipline of keeping the 2 spreadsheets - will ensure "finger tips" tracking of our income and spendings - instead of relying on "gut feelings" --- as people tend to spend frivolously or lavishly if we don't keep track how much we earn and how much we spend.

2. By keeping the detail spending item categories - will also trigger an alert - if we notice that the items we spend has gone up higher than the previous months --- indicating price rises and inflation of that particular items has taken place.

If we notice that some particular items has risen too much and eat into our income --- then we can take remedial actions :-

a. Find substitutes to replace the items in which price has risen too high.

b. Find alternative means to boost our income to cover the inflation.

c. Both responses - will ensure individuals and household - can help to maintain our cost of living and standard living --- by actively countering and hedging against the inflation and price rises.

d. The 2 spreadsheets - are the most systematic, objective and factual tools - for us to tackle the cost pressure.

e. Failure to do the above --- many will discover at the end of the year --- that individuals and household could have overspent ---- because there are no tools to systematically track our expenses and income - to enable us to mount a response early to cover the rising cost.

f. By having a "finger tip" knowledge of our monthly income and how much we spend ---- we will be very conscious on what items we can spend on and what items we should look for a substitute.

And we will actively look for new income source, once we notice we are low on income or savings.

3. At the end of every month, we will be very certain that we can manage and control the unprecedented inflation - cause by the runaway price increases mainly due to external factors beyond our control.

[2:43 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

1. Some people may say, Ok to hedge against rising cost - I can find substitute in food, groceries, cheaper handphone, take bus/mrt rather than taxi, private hire or drive a car.

2. But what about finding alternative income sources especially for middle and lower income - cannot be taking 2 or 3 jobs.

3. I will suggest the following :-

a. By conscientiously keeping the 2 spreadsheets - Income and Spendings - I will maintain a discipline to ensure I have savings for the month.

b. When accumulate enough savings for a couple of month, or get a bonus, or there are insurance payout, dividend, interest, mature capital assets - can look for other income sources like :-

a. Make placement on SSB (Singapore Saving Bonds) - can place up to $200,000 - bond interest for this month is 2.09% - and will poise to increase next month - due to FED hawkish stance on higher interest rate to tackle inflation on 4-5 May 2022.

b. Placement in short term (2 years to 3 years) Saving insurance - pay close to 1.8% to 2%.

c. Placement into Bank Fixed Deposit - 1.25% to 1.4% ---- poised to increase next month in tandem to FED interest rate hike.

d. Long term - Top-up CPF (Voluntary contribution) - 2.5%.

e. Other more risky investment - eg. good shares, structured deposit (those with higher risk appetite) - but may lose the capital if not careful.

The above will help us to accumulate wealth on top of our earnings in salary, business profit - to cushion the higher inflation.

Of course the recent government payout will also help - eg. CDC voucher, GST voucher, U-save etc.

Aggregating the above efforts - many lower and middle income earners can cushion and cover the impact of unprecedented inflation --- and yet still maintain our same standard of living while keep the cost-of-living in check.

[3:37 pm, 29/04/2022] +Rama: Totally agree

[3:38 pm, 29/04/2022] +Ken Loh: Can be learned… with the right mindset and YouTube have lots of free resource for understanding of the market if you want to be financially educated there are many.

[4:46 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

Wonder how effective is wolbachia male mosquito to prevent female aedes mosquito from hatching their eggs.

In theory it sounds like able to terminate aedes mosquito breeding.

But in practical life, don't know how good the outcome?

Else we won't have such dengue problem year after year.

[4:47 pm, 29/04/2022] +Rama: I was wondering about that!

[5:09 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

This problem will seems to get worse when next year, nea start to charge plastic bags.

Because many people will stop to bin their trash but throw their liquid refuse and solid refuse down the rubbish chutes.

Then mosquito will breed in every block.

[5:10 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

Because no plastic bags how to bin our trash?

[5:13 pm, 29/04/2022] +Timothy Low: Plastic bags can still be bought at a Low price

[5:16 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

So you mean people need to buy when it is now free.

[5:20 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

So wonder why this topic about price increases when everything can also be bought at a price?

Increase price solve everything what.

[5:28 pm, 29/04/2022] +Joseph: Doesn't that mean that there are now more than 8x the competition for the same PMET posts assuming the number of roles remain the same, and all positions are only for locals? 😅

Factor in advancements in productivity ie. each person handling more tasks and/or machinery/Computers replacing some tasks/roles that used to be performed by humans, bilateral/multilateral trade agreements and you start to realise that even education/qualifications are not immune to inflation 😅

[5:30 pm, 29/04/2022] +Timothy Low: I think more people will try to accumulate as many plastic bags as possible. Then when plastic bag start to charge they will start using the stock they accumulated. Then when run out they can just pay for the plastic bag (which is 5-10cents per piece).

[5:31 pm, 29/04/2022] +Timothy Low: When it becomes a norm people won’t mind paying for a small price

[5:32 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

Well just wait to see the outcome.

If go for a win-lose solution then it will get a lose-lose outcome.

If there are more heart and mind to implement a win-win solutions - then it will be a win-win outcome.

The outcome speak for itself.

[5:34 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

This is what you think.

But in my private chat group few people already lambast the policy.

Else why this topic about price increases?

[5:35 pm, 29/04/2022] +Timothy Low: To me increase of 5c for each plastic bag is ok. Compared to increase in 2% of GST.

[5:35 pm, 29/04/2022] +jimmy chew: Imagine this is your salary

[5:36 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

Well let us see next year mid 2023.

[5:38 pm, 29/04/2022] +Timothy Low: Your guess is as good as mine

[5:40 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

My estate already see rubbish thrown around the rubbish areas without plastic bags.

Let see will it be worst next year.

[5:43 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

I should have taken pictures just now so that there is proof of what is happening.

[5:45 pm, 29/04/2022] +Rama: Refuse chutes only for old flats. For new ones, residents might just dirty the common refuse bin outside.

[5:46 pm, 29/04/2022] +Rama: More fines!

[5:46 pm, 29/04/2022] +Rama: Yeah

[5:47 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

Then hygiene problems will be worst without bining the trash

[5:47 pm, 29/04/2022] +Rama: Exactly

[5:49 pm, 29/04/2022] +Timothy Low: Let’s take a look at Taiwan. They have been charging plastic bags for years. Their rubbish problem didn’t get worsen. It’s all about educating and changing of mindset. Sometimes all it takes is some law or fine like the tray return policy and people will change their habits

Don't worry let us see after 2023.

We will find out.

My estate already got rat nest.

Visitors to my block say they see 3 big rats running around the grass patch at night.

To: Our Distinguished Ministers And All Honorable Members

"The cookings, the consumables and the cosmetics...The complementary goods and the competing goods (左右困难)"

Consequence -

Today Indonesia banned palm oil export to the world! Malaysia and Indonesia are closely related (cooperations & consessions), this big agri-edible oil business!

Simultaneous -

All previous contracts signed till April 27 will be honored as done deals. It is not surprising that big nations and big corporations would have Stacks of these inked contracts for CPOs and / or RPOs to be fulfilled for the entire harvest season or two prior to the April 28 deadline?

C+S -

Next is temptations of profiteering of this precious and useful edible oil by corporations and countries which will trigger down to the 'value added' retail chain of consumers' goods - inflated prices of up to 30% across half the groceries products ?

C+S & Forward -

Will many affected countries SUBSIDISE (资助) these daily consumptions say at a level of 15% intervention?  Is subsidising healthy and sustainable for the next 24 months time line ?

How deep is your pocket?

Assuming in the near future, time line is compressed and converged with inflations; these crunching momentum will lead to implosion/explosion of economics structures of any nation - starts with the poorer? Poverty and inequalities, the poorer nations will have multiple millions of poor citizens while the richer and aging nations will have poor citizens too!

Expect a minimum increase of $300 or more per household monthly expenditures from foods, goods and services. The more a household/individual expenses, the higher the money needed to pay for the rising prices of things. The baseline starts with $300/mth/household, these unavoidable pains and realities? Money is a function, a transaction, like the olden days barter trades, is this same old world we are living in now (人为钱而亡, 鸟为食而亡)?

HBO - home based operations?

Will it kick starts a new way of providing Internet services and online contents from homes?

Any implications to the physical reallocations and metrics of properties? This case office spaces reits and homes?
