As the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is expected to release a new report on Monday (4 April), on the comprehensive assessment of climate science, it is important for all to bring back the awareness to climate change.

The Government plans to cut emissions by increasing the use of electric vehicles, importing more renewable energy into Singapore, and through policies such as the carbon tax. But tackling climate change will involve societal change too.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What are your views on the Singapore Green Plan 2030? How can we help achieve the goals laid out in the Green Plan?

Last September, the Urban Redevelopment Authority and Land Transport Authority awarded a pilot tender to equip over 200 public carparks with more than 600 charging points to ComfortDelGro Engineering and facility services firm Primech A&P and their consortium partners.

The Energy Market Authority (EMA) has also announced plans to reduce the carbon footprint of the power sector by importing about 30 per cent of its electricity from low-carbon sources by 2035.

New technology to transport and extract low-carbon hydrogen fuel to Singapore is being developed in the Republic and could be implemented on a national scale as early as 2030.

From mid-2023 shoppers will have to pay at least five cents for every disposable bag, regardless of material, they take at most supermarket outlets here.

But besides reducing the use of resources, people can also be spurred to take other actions that will contribute to efforts against climate change, whether it be taking public transport more often or reducing electricity consumption at home by installing energy-efficient appliances, said Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu.

[10:50 am, 04/04/2022] +Uncle Law: Green Plan needs to look at unwanted circulars that are printed and sent to everyhouse. Take for example the budget 2022. It was printed and mailed to all household.

We would have saved quite a few tonnes of paper should it had not been printed.

For those who requires such printed circulars, can pick up from CCs or RCs.

[10:51 am, 04/04/2022] +Uncle Law: The pace to install EVs chargers has to increase intandam with the increased in EVs being sold. This would encourage for car owners to swap to more greener vehicle.

[10:52 am, 04/04/2022] +Uncle Law: To encourage less use of disposable bags, supermarkets could take the lead by giving discounts to customers who used reusable shopping bags.

[10:53 am, 04/04/2022] +Uncle Law: Hawker could give 10 or 20c disc for every reusable container being used.

[10:54 am, 04/04/2022] +Uncle Law: Mindset of using reusable containers or bags will take some time to sink in.

[11:10 am, 04/04/2022] +BL: Yes, good thinking. Even if this is small in the scheme of things, it sets a good example. Also, just email it to people and have on a website.

[11:11 am, 04/04/2022] +BL: Also, yes. Ensure the infrastructure is there to encourage and enable. Just as LTA does with building MRT stations

[11:14 am, 04/04/2022] +Uncle Law: To add on, more bicycle racks should be added at hdb void decks and transport hubs, this also encourage ppl to exercise and less reliant on buses.

[11:15 am, 04/04/2022] +BL: Ban non degradable disposable bags. Do not charge for degradable disposable bags.

[11:15 am, 04/04/2022] +Uncle Law: Personally, increasing carbon tax will not encourage ppl to switch to greener energy vehicles. More efforts on education is necessary.

And to encourage car makers to have more greener models to be put on the road.

[11:16 am, 04/04/2022] +BL: Speed up the 2035 timeline. 12 years is far too long and there is little justification for such a long  way off.

[11:18 am, 04/04/2022] +BL: Provide water saving faucet add ons to all HDB (or subsidise)

[11:19 am, 04/04/2022] +BL: Remember that the younger generation will be directly affected by climate change far more than the current leadership. We need to push harder and faster so our legacy is not destroyed by a lack of prompt action.

[11:20 am, 04/04/2022] +BL: Yes, and incidentally older broken bikes removed to make more space.

[11:20 am, 04/04/2022] +BL: Some already do this!

[11:21 am, 04/04/2022] +BL: Reduce the amount of plastic containers for food especailly and charge a packaging tax on goods (no idea how to do this though!)

[11:24 am, 04/04/2022] +Rama: Motorists must feel the pinch. Education is a part only.

[11:25 am, 04/04/2022] +Rama: Education must start as early as possible with public support via skits publicised

[11:25 am, 04/04/2022] +Rama: Reaching out to the lowly and non educated will be a challenge.

[11:26 am, 04/04/2022] +Uncle Law: Don't think the feeling the pinch is working though

[11:27 am, 04/04/2022] +Rama: Any idea on what hawkers feel about public bringing their own food containers!?

[11:27 am, 04/04/2022] +Uncle Law: Education starts from primary sch or even earlier

[11:27 am, 04/04/2022] +Rama: Agree

[11:27 am, 04/04/2022] +Rama: Pinch harder!

[11:28 am, 04/04/2022] +RH: ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Yes & speed up the installation of Smart water / elect meters to enable us to take more control over our consumption.

[11:35 am, 04/04/2022] +RH: Agree.

However,  ther wl still be a section of the popn who r not social media savvy or are just old school.

And ther wl be ppl who r not so ambulant.

Point is...  Who is the target recipient of such flyers?

Radio, TV & newsprint can convey the msg across.

Trouble is, again, not all households tune in to free-to-air channels...  Many just watch Netflix.

I suppose when it comes to sending the msg out, nothing beats a public roadshow or event or if u want,  a targeted Campaign...

Better to convert the cost of flyers to big banners at CC's / RC's instead and hv them ther for as long the campaign runs...  ๐Ÿ˜

[11:36 am, 04/04/2022] +Sunshine Pooh: all comes down to profit margin. greener then it is sold to customers at higher cost. make no sense for user to pay more for smthg greener

[11:37 am, 04/04/2022] +Sunshine Pooh: each housing estate has notice boards... put it up there.. everyone takes lift up to their house.. surely will read...

[11:37 am, 04/04/2022] +RH: Yes.

The companies can absorb the discounts from the monies they collect on the other hand from charging for those who do pay the disposables...

[11:38 am, 04/04/2022] +Sunshine Pooh: even the newsletters are on papers that is at least 100gsm

[11:38 am, 04/04/2022] +Uncle Law: Yes. Print in 4 language. If really need hardcopy, ask tHem to go nearest cc or rc. If they lazy, they won't take

[11:39 am, 04/04/2022] +Sunshine Pooh: yes... just use infographics to give gist. more infor at cc

[11:40 am, 04/04/2022] +Sunshine Pooh: newsletters with ink and all isnt really green too or gd for the environment - r the inks used envt friendly?

[11:40 am, 04/04/2022] +RH: ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Also good idea.

But I'm thinking of those who dun read or hv problem w size of words,  etc.

For me, I always miss the notice board...  Seldom notice it even tho it's in my lift lobby...  Sori!

So a banner is Big, Bold,  and "in your face" out there!  Can't miss.

[11:41 am, 04/04/2022] +Sunshine Pooh: a lot of unnecessary wastage. but agree that roads are the best way to really deliver to the messages

[11:41 am, 04/04/2022] +Sunshine Pooh: *masses

[11:43 am, 04/04/2022] +BL: Flyers stuck on our doors should be considered littering and fines issued. They create waste, rubbish and hassle for residents. If they choose to contact us, use our letterboxes (although I'd call that littering too)

[11:44 am, 04/04/2022] +BL: We will pay one way or another. $100bn in sea defences is something we are paying for as a result of climate change.

[11:45 am, 04/04/2022] +BL: There are LED Screens installed in many HDBs. Sell the ad space to companies and ban flyers.

[11:46 am, 04/04/2022] +BL: We will need to consider the impact to printing companies and perhaps provide a grant for them to pivot to a more beneficial industry. Perhaps Digital marketing.

[11:46 am, 04/04/2022] +Sunshine Pooh: this is another option. so many of these things r put up at every estates - at a huge cost however they are under utilised

[11:47 am, 04/04/2022] +BL: Yes - so let's sell the space to companies who want to advertise to HDB owners. Particularly the Real Estate agents who currently litter their leaflets all along the walkways.

[11:48 am, 04/04/2022] +Uncle Law: Cheap prints Don't have environmentally friendly inks. Cos is more expensive.

[11:48 am, 04/04/2022] +BL: Also use the LED Screens as an alternative to the community leaflets, and save some money there.

[11:49 am, 04/04/2022] +Sunshine Pooh: i believe the intent wasnt for revenue generating... it is information guide... wic should be used by govt instead of flyers. as for the leaflets by agents - there is no stopping them to hire part timers to still go around estates to shove their fliers on our gates

[11:53 am, 04/04/2022] +RH: Yes,

Let's not forget printing companies wl be impacted,  as wl their material suppliers.

Nd to also look at encouraging such businesses to go green...

No point gg out to shout all abt it then neglect the supply chain.

No flyers, no printing,  less biz...

[11:55 am, 04/04/2022] +BL: Yes, I'm sure they use part-timers, but if the part-timers are fined then they won't be taking that work again and word will soon get round! Or better still, fine the employer.... Is littering not an offence?

[11:57 am, 04/04/2022] +Uncle Law: Those printed circulars, if can be reduced, this would also means lesser carbon footprint not just on the printing but also the postage.

[0:21 pm, 04/04/2022] +BL: ๐Ÿ‘

[0:27 pm, 04/04/2022] +Sunshine Pooh: always go for the main person not the low hanging fruits (aka the PTs who are trying to earn a living)

[0:31 pm, 04/04/2022] +BL: True - and maybe put some notices on the LED Screens saying that Leafleting doors is considering Littering and subject to a fine!

[0:33 pm, 04/04/2022] +Sunshine Pooh: littering is prevalent more in newer estates as pple are moving in and doing up house. in my matured estates i dont see that many fliers.. only sometimes stuck to my gate.. as for my mail box i lock it - so no way for them to put in!

[0:35 pm, 04/04/2022] +BL: Ah, I'm in a Mature Estate too. We get way too many stuck in our gates and left along the walkways.

[1:17 pm, 04/04/2022] +Smiley face: https://youtu.be/nVAUSwaNNqg

[1:24 pm, 04/04/2022] +Uncle Law: to reduce carbon footprints on printing of circulars informing citizens of the upcoming policies, budget and etc, govtech can be roped in to develop an app or to add feature to existing SingPass app.

call it Circulars from Gov or something towards it. all the circulars can be broadcast timely to this feature or app.

those not on this feature, can recv notification via sms to register for the app or to go to nearest CC or RCs to collect the hardcopy circulars.

this way, past circulars can also be retrieved.

[1:25 pm, 04/04/2022] +Uncle Law: similarly to the whatsapp or telegram broadcast from Gov

[1:25 pm, 04/04/2022] +Uncle Law: i dont think it will cost a lot to develop. perhaps already existing prototype is already in use, and can simply port over and modified to suit this purpose

1. Ancient Wisdom say :-

There are 3 minor catastrophe that will threaten humanity.

Indeed these 3 minor catastrophe has manifested during this few years namely :-

a. Pandemic - covid since Dec 2019

b. War - current Russia invasion of Ukraine (even the threat of nuclear war), the last US-N Korea missile exchange (threat of nuclear)

c. Global Climate - that have trigger rising sea level, typhoon, excessive rainfall, flood, dry condition that lead to forest fire etc.

Indeed, such is the Wisdom of Ancient time :-

ๅฐไธ‰็พ (Minor catastrophe)

็˜Ÿ็–ซ,ๅˆ€ๅ…ตๅŠซ,ๅคฉ็พ  (Pandemic, war, Global climate) - that will threaten the existence of Humanity.

There are 4 stages of Universal Existence according to Ancient Wisdom :-

(ๆˆ,ไฝ,ๅ,็ฉบ)- Birth, Living, Decaying and Emptiness.

Humanity are now at :-

(่ดคๅŠซไธญ็š„“ไฝๅŠซ”) - Small catastrope of Living Stage.

--- hence we are facing the 3 minor catastrope (Covid Pandemic, threat of war - nuclear or WW3, Global climate) that converge at Humanity during this period.

This Ancient Wisdom ----- indeed is a very precise prophecy.

[2:31 pm, 04/04/2022] +Guillermo Cabeza: I’m not convinced that electric vehicles are necessarily more environmentally friendly especially in a low mileage driving country like ours, given the negative environmental impact of their batteries. But putting this aside, what I don’t understand is why the government would want to make us more reliant on natural gas (which we use for electricity production) by encouraging the use of EV over petrol cars. Inevitably more EV will put pressure on electricity costs at a time when we are poorly equipped as a country in terms of alternative power sources. More thought on this by the govt is needed.

[2:32 pm, 04/04/2022] +Guillermo Cabeza: The answer isn’t necessarily to cover our reservoirs with solar cells which has a negative impact on wildlife.

[2:38 pm, 04/04/2022] +BL: It's about the future. EV will get more efficient, faster etc. Petrol is old tech and pollutes our urban areas. There is no future in petrol will get more expensive as it gets phased out. We need to be looking forward.

[2:38 pm, 04/04/2022] +Guillermo Cabeza: I agree with you on these points.

[2:42 pm, 04/04/2022] +Rama: Agree

[2:45 pm, 04/04/2022] +Guillermo Cabeza: On some of the other aspects of the green plan: excellent idea to continue to plant trees and set up more parks but NParks should not be too quick to cut down native trees and plant short shrub like trees in their stead; reducing water consumption by households is laudable but tough to achieve this in a hot climate so perhaps isn’t a realistic goal; reducing landfill waste is a great idea but again hard to see how this can be done in practice - eg the colleagues who bring their lunch in daily in reusable containers are few and far between for a whole host of good reasons starting with everyone wants to take a break and get out of the office (some of ideas posted earlier are very good); greener buildings great idea.

[2:48 pm, 04/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Achieving the goals of Green Plan, discussion points :-

A. Renewable energy for electricity

- Solar Panel

- Hydrogen fuel (H20, solar, biomass)

versus fossil fuel, natural gas.

B. Transport

- Taking more public transport like MRT, bus

- Clean energy like electric car, hydrogen fuel cell, solar(?)

C. Daily used plastic

- Plastic Packaging of groceries

- Disposable containers of packet foods

- Carrier for groceries

[2:49 pm, 04/04/2022] +Smiley face: Singapore will continue to rely on natural gas amidst push to boost solar capacity: Chan Chun Sing

https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/environment/singapore-will-continue-to-rely-on-natural-gas-for-the-next-50-years-chan-chun

Said Mr Chan: "We will continue to rely on natural gas for the next 50 years for a substantial part of our energy needs."

[2:50 pm, 04/04/2022] +Smiley face: https://www.ema.gov.sg/Piped_Natural_Gas_and_Liquefied_Natural_Gas.aspx

[3:08 pm, 04/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

A. Renewable Energy for Electricity

1. Currently, Singapore electricity is generated predominantly by fossil fuel and moving more and more into natural gas.

2. Fossil fuel indeed is an unclean energy - and hence Singapore has moved into natural gas - which is a cleaner form of energy than fossil fuel. But natural gas is still derived from fossil fuel.

3. Hence there is a need to look at other cleaner sources of energy - which is solar energy (which is an infinite nature resources) and hydrogen as fuel (which is also derived from infinite nature resources such as water H20 or solar or even biomass).

4. But there are still challenges in using solar panel as energy :-

a. Solar panel is still not fully commercially viable - to produce the energy that can match the volume produced by natural gas and fossil fuel - though it is a clean energy and come from infinite energy source - the Sun (free from nature).

b. Solar panel if replaced and discarded at its end-of-life will also pose a nasty waste that is difficult to dispose off and a globe polluter.

c. But if solar panel can produce higher electricity yield like natural gas or fossil fuels -- specifically for home or small business ---- solar panel - electric sources from the Sun - an infinite free resources ---- it will be a blessing For Singapore.

5. Hydrogen energy source - that are derived from water H20, solar or biomass --- another free infinite energy source --- has the greatest potential of "falling from the sky, take from the ocean" for free - like how the Middle East Countries dig "fuel gold" from the soil for free.

- Hence Singapore concentrating our effort in R&D on hydrogen energy source ---- is our biggest bet to build our capabilities in delivering energy from hydrogen to replace fossil fuel - and develop our clean energy source.

6. Nuclear energy - is another clean energy source. But there is a very big risk of nuclear radiation and disposal of toxic nuclear waste - that can trigger tremendous health hazard of cancer from radiation.

Unless the R&D of nuclear energy also prepare us from ๅˆ€ๅ…ตๅŠซ - nuclear war - where Russia threat of nuclear on Ukraine --- have elevate this threat several notch up.

[3:17 pm, 04/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

B. Transport

1. Commuters taking more public transport - for mass commuting eg. MRT and bus --- will definitely reduce the needs to commute by cars - and reduce the carbon release into the air daily and pollute our environment.

2. But for those who can afford private cars, taxi, private hire - using fossil fuel - will definitely pollute our air.

3. Hence electric cars that run on batteries, in future hydrogen fuel cells and even solar panels (many trial on using solar panel to power cars - but no commercial production) --- will be a cleaner source for transport.

4. Hence it make sense for our public bus, taxi, private cars, public hired cars - to slowly migrate into EV cars, hydrogen fuel cars or solar cars (?) --- to ensure daily commute - no carbon is released into the environment and pollute our air.

5. However, batteries, hydrogen fuel cells or solar panels --- like the rest of the car parts like tires, chassis, engines etc --- will become a nusiance waste to be disposed off - come end of life.

----

C. Daily used plastic bags

1. I will support more cutting down on plastic package or chloroform package on groceries, fruits, food products - as they are wasteful and need to thrown away and cause alot of waste. Government should work with food producers to look into cutting down unnecessary packaging that produce unncessary waste.

2. Disposabble containers and utensils for take away food - is also another pollution source. In fact government should look into more incentives to use reusable containers for takeaway food.

3. Plastic bags as carrier and dual-used to bag solid and liquid waste in Supermarket :-

a. I am not against the used of reusable carriers for groceries - so that we can cut down disposable plastic carriers.

b. However, I am not happy that by charging plastic carriers that also used to bag solid and liquid water - will means transfering the cost of bagging waste at home to the household - by inducing household to buy their own plastic bags to bag waste.

This will in effect change the habits of many household not to bag the home solid and liquid waste at home - and just throw the home waste - liquid and solid waste down the rubbish chute - and trigger a country-wide hygiene problem.

c. In effect, solving the excessive plastic bag problem - will create another country-wide hygiene problem.

d. Why the government not consider using carbon credit to give free plastic bag in supermarket for a limited amount - and then start to charge when the carbon credit for free plastic bag is used up - so that the free plastic bags can be used to bag home waste?

This will solve 2 problems at one go :-

i. By reducing plastic bag used.

ii. Household have some free plastic bags to bag home waste - to prevent hygiene problem.

iii. If not come 2030, we will see the hygiene outcome when plastic bags are charge - if no attention are paid to bagging the home waste.

[5:18 pm, 04/04/2022] +Guillermo Cabeza: Mandatory ART and mask wearing while dancing or singing? This isn’t nightlife! Has to change for events like F1 to be successful in attracting tourists.

[5:24 pm, 04/04/2022] +Sam: Nightlight in Bangkok

[5:25 pm, 04/04/2022] +Sam: At least we don't need to poke nose at roadside.

[5:34 pm, 04/04/2022] +Anthony: Green plan to me was immature plan from our government the policy lack of human touch

Asking customer to pay 20¢ more for plastic bag was a insult what the hell

The service provider should provide free carrier no matter what material

Another thing green plan to charge carbon tax

Already high  fuel price people on the ground had being paid so much more for last few months

[5:37 pm, 04/04/2022] +Anthony: Cannot compare to Ang Moh then they said 2050

Then our government just follow the suit

Sound to me was silly one

Hope our government care our people more

Not just listen to Ang Moh wish

If that was the case it's was a shame

[5:39 pm, 04/04/2022] +Anthony: Qi lot Pai happy to touch foreign ladies after resume nightlife

That's our government want

Poor thing๐Ÿคฆ‍♂️๐Ÿคฆ‍♂️

[5:55 pm, 04/04/2022] +Rama: Understand

[6:04 pm, 04/04/2022] +Caleb: +1

[6:12 pm, 04/04/2022] +Sunshine Pooh: +1. EVENTUALLY everything comes down to consumer like u n me to pay. What r companies doing. Esp major govt agencies like ntuc, popular.

[6:20 pm, 04/04/2022] +Eunice Chia: Green plan created an awareness in my family to be serious in our life choices to be kinder on our environment, and inevitably it helped us cut down cost, save money

We chose to reuse things we outgrew, we either sold it or gave it away and in turn, we started to receive things we need from others or pay a token for it

We chose to reduce consumption and that saved us a lot of money ( take public transport instead of driving, plan what to buy instead of binge buying) We're reduce water, gas and electricity consumption by reminding each other to reduce or switch off.

And of course recycle, I bring my own bag, containers for dabao

I'm still learning about the green plan and what me and my family can do to live more sustainably.  It is not an Ang moh concept, it's applying what our parents taught us

1. Remember how we used to eat at home, simple healthy meals?

2. Save water, save electricity and gas?

3. Take public transport even though it's a long and sometimes uncomfortable journey because we couldn't afford a car?

4. We only get new clothes/shoes once a year during CNY or Hari Raya?

It's our choice of living that impacts cost of living.

[6:21 pm, 04/04/2022] +Joseph: ๐Ÿ‘

[6:36 pm, 04/04/2022] +Sunshine Pooh: I have done the same but some things like car may be a necessity for some. Imagine going back yo office at 3am n no grab driver wants to pick u up cos yr place is away from lucrative areas.

Or the dirty look n snigger that you receive when u bring yr own containers for dapao. Well I have been the receiving end of these.

Saving water, electricity and binge buying should be 2nd nature to us. But changing the mindset of providers is equally impt

[6:48 pm, 04/04/2022] +Eunice Chia: Of course you can justify driving if you've to go back to work at 3am often enough.

My experience of bringing my own containers have been very pleasant.  ๐Ÿ˜… I even bring my own fork/spoon/chopsticks to the bemusement of our hawkers.  Think we don't have to feel bad about living our life choices, and I feel happier living the values my parents raised my with, and it happens to be quite aligned to what Gov is encouraging us to do with the Green Plan.

[6:55 pm, 04/04/2022] +Anthony: Outcome of dabao waste water & liquid for washing ,So call save our planet just silly enough

[6:56 pm, 04/04/2022] +Anthony: Green Plan is a choice ,but shouldn't let our national pay for it

I choose to opt out

[6:57 pm, 04/04/2022] +Anthony: If everything like medisheld Singaporean Wil leave no choice but to pay for it

It's a sad end

[7:00 pm, 04/04/2022] +Charles Johnson: The grim alternative to not having an actionable (even if painful) green plan is death to planet ๐ŸŒŽ earth and our children which inherit it .. no point talking about money / freedom to choose if the outcome is death to the next generation that outlives us.

Incidentally, the biggest impact you can have on reducing your carbon footprint as an individual is to eat less meat / seafood / processed food

[7:00 pm, 04/04/2022] +Anthony: A responsible government would discuss with our national  carefully not just Cut & Chop attitude

Hope Government would change the way to interact with our singaporean
