After months of adapting one's lifestyle to guard against COVID-19, experts said that mental tension and fatigue might cause individuals to act carelessly. How are you and your family maintaining mental wellness?
Singapore has been battling with COVID-19 for over half a year, and the fight against the virus is increasingly becoming a mental one.
According to experts, psychological fatigue and a false sense of security are behind the crowd gathering at public places such as restaurants and beaches. This is particularly since community cases remain low despite many businesses reopening.
Professor Teo Yik Ying, dean of the National University of Singapore's Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, said that it is inevitable that individuals start to let their guard down, become complacent, or simply frustrated after months of facing the strain of COVID-19.
According to sociologist Pauline Straughan: "In the beginning, most will be cautious when they venture out." However, she added that: "When this is normalised and especially when nothing happens when we resume social activities, many may tend to let their guard down. So what we need is constant reminders, and rule enforcement to guard the boundaries."

1. Fatigue and complacency is a natural tendency for humans to fall into - when people are being shut out or restrain from normal social activities in which they usually enjoy.

2. However, as long as nationwide health safeguard are put in place - people will notice that the virus danger is still intact - and will subconsciously remind ourselves that danger is not over - and we still need to protect ourselves and refrain from being lure into complacency to get ourselves infected, our family members infected as well as infect others.

3. Among the national health safeguard put in place that must constinue to be enforced until and unless vaccines are developed and people get vaccinated are :-
a. Work-From-Home - whereby workers are still organised in group to work from home and rotate with workplace.

b. Shopping mall and organisations - have strict entries, exit and social distancing procedures put in place.

c. SafeEntry scan put in place to track entry and exit.

d. Compulsory face masks when people go out of home.

e. Food cours, hawker centres, F&B, restaurants etc - have social distancing during dine-in.

f. Daily broadcast of infection numbers - to remind people that virus risk are still lurking.

4. As long as the national health safeguard are not lifted --- psychologically, people will not be silly to undertake risky activities and get themselves as well as other infected.

5. Social pressure will also be around to ensure people will not go over the moon to totally disregard safety measures - as people will still report blatant risky behavior.
