📢 Topic 📢
What precautionary measures should we take to keep our community safe?
At the multi-ministry task force press conference held yesterday (2 July), it was revealed that there were 9 COVID-19 cases detected at Blk 111 Tampines St 11.
On June 23, MOH detected a COVID-19 case living in the block. The Singaporean man worked at The Leo Dormitory and was picked up during MOH's proactive screening of dormitories. Subsequently, six of his household members tested positive for COVID-19. On June 27, another two COVID-19 cases were detected in the same block but on a different level. They were reported to have no interactions with the 7 other cases.
Aside from the usual quarantine measures, residents of all 58 households living in the same section of the block that share a common lift lobby and stairwell were contacted to see if they were well. This is a precautionary measure taken due to the possibility of inadvertent contacts between the households.

Should look at 3 prong measures to keep our community safe and tackle the virus pandemic :-

*Immediate term measures*
1. Adhere to strict Social distancing
- wear mask when out of house at all times.
- maintain distance of at least 1 metre
- wash hands with soap regularly
- work at home as far as possible
- avoid crowd
- when dine outside - make sure after eating, put on mask.

2. Enhance Contact tracing capability - to quickly identify all contact source and quarantine, treat them
- scan SafeEntry QR if entering any premises, shops, malls, office etc to facilitate contact tracing.
- hope Government quickly issue contact tracer token - and everyone should carry with them to help in contact tracing.
-
3. Adopt Ring fence meausres
- By ensuring interaction between people can be ring-fence (eg. work at home or split workers into groups, same for school etc) - to control spreading.
- In areas with large crowd eg, shopping centres, food courts, markets etc -- regulate crowd and ring fence entries.

4. Open economy step by step and do so surgically
- We must open up our economy step-by-step with safeguard in place to prevent large scale spreading.
- Unlikely we should consider closing the economy backwards as cases rises - because it will hurt business, jobs and the Economy. Instead more safeguard should be put in place if the safeguard is inadequate.

*Medium term meaures*
5. Treatment & vaccines
- are the only way to effectively stop and curb the virus.
- If vaccines and treatment are found and develop --- our plan manufacturing capacity should be able to ramp up production quickly and help to get Singaporeans and residents vaccinated and with excess capacity can export vaccines to other Countries to help in global infection.

*Long term measures*
6. Rearing mass livestocks and mass slaughtering for animals food as well as eating wild animals are the greatest culprit of animal-to-human host virus pandemic
- We must constantly do R&D on alternative food sources to replace mass slaughtering of livestocks and wild animals for food ---- so that it will stop not only covid-19, but also future virus pandemic.
- Good potential food sources like Vegan base meat, vegetarian foods, beyond meat, 3D printed vegan based meat, cell culture and tissue re-engineering meat (that does not require keeping large livestock for mass slaughtering) - but only extracting of cells, tissues etc --- should be pursue and R&D so that such alternative food sources --- will replace live stock slaughtering and prevent future animal-to-human host virus pandemic once and for all.

The proposed above 3 prong measures --- can then effectively curb and tackle the current covid-19 virus pandemic and future animal-to-human host virus pandemic.

[5:48 pm, 03/07/2020] +: Lol Danny always so formal 🤣

Rama
[5:51 pm, 03/07/2020] +: However Good still

Ken
[5:57 pm, 03/07/2020] +: Only point 6 I don’t agree. 🤣
Why I explain part of it already. But alternative source of food yes, still need to actively find it.
Getting the young to be in R&D is hard, due to the pay, uncertainty of job, many cons then pros. If we can solved that we will have more researcher. But as good ones comes out many die along the way as well. (As in no job or didn’t manage to do well fade into the background)
Passion and grades which is more important? To get into advance degree. Then go on to do research.

[6:19 pm, 03/07/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
Thought writing policy paper must have a formal structured format with proper numbering system?
This numbering system is still not the formal type.

Ken
[6:20 pm, 03/07/2020] +: Nah most of us here or at least me just chill. 🤣🤣
First few points are good 👌

[6:23 pm, 03/07/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
R&D is not that frightening.
It is my previous portfolio for a number of years

Ken
[6:24 pm, 03/07/2020] +: I am there for 5 years fair share of it as well.. Life Sci side is quite sad. And life is uncertain. Hence I left, even thought got offer for PhD. 😕

Ken
[6:25 pm, 03/07/2020] +: Depends on which field you are in. And your academic tree

[6:26 pm, 03/07/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
A couple of my relatives are in R&D for a couple of years.
So not that frightening.

Ken
[6:26 pm, 03/07/2020] +: See two of my PhD friends suicide 🤦‍♂️
If you have a good family Witt decent income and wife/husband supportive yes.
If need stable income for family no

Ken
[6:27 pm, 03/07/2020] +: A few go into depression
[6:27 pm, 03/07/2020] +: Seen enough fair share for my side

[6:27 pm, 03/07/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
I think depending on the field.

Ken
[6:27 pm, 03/07/2020] +: Yes very much

Rama
[6:27 pm, 03/07/2020] +: Sad!😞😔😟

Ken
[6:32 pm, 03/07/2020] +: This are people I know, not hear say or don’t know them at all.
One I talk to her the day before she jumped 😔
This forever can’t forget. 😔
Just in the papers put a 35 years old suicided that’s all. But what happen only people in the institution knows.
If given a choice my kids, I won’t encourage unless I have the means and don’t need him/her to take care of the family.

[6:34 pm, 03/07/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
People should not undertake the suicide path.
People can switch path if the R&D route cannot go further.

Jimmy Chew
[6:36 pm, 03/07/2020] +: how come depression? burn out?

Ken
[6:40 pm, 03/07/2020] +: Research is not a sure find answer path, why research, re-search, cannot find the search again.
I have many friend do 4 years of research and found nothing, it is not uncommon. But without a paper how you graduate? Some lucky ones first year can finish and confirm their graduation.
If without a decent paper publish you can’t find a decent next job. Not everyone can take that blow. 4 years, those that don’t do PhD might have kids might have career. You have nothing if you grad without a PhD. Consolation is you get a masters.
Then start from fresh grad with no experience.
Do note most PhD holders are high scoring individual in GPA. Character not strong? Partly, but most of them do not have many friends or family to talk to when they need help.

Rama
[6:40 pm, 03/07/2020] +: The pressures of responsibility, expectations and fulfillment!

Dong Liang
[6:41 pm, 03/07/2020] +: PhD can be very tough, especially if your supervisor is not supportive. It can drag for  years.

Rama
[6:41 pm, 03/07/2020] +: Possibly

Ken
[6:43 pm, 03/07/2020] +: 4 to 5th year if you supervisor no funding, you are on your own. When you need to send money back to family that depend on your allowance?
[6:43 pm, 03/07/2020] +: You still need to pay rent, eat and travel to school, 4 and 5th onwards you cannot stay in school

Jimmy Chew
[6:43 pm, 03/07/2020] +1: Character is strong, to be discipline to continue the research, to have ways to find answers, to question and argue the data, to spot irregularities in the data, to distill data and write something that is unique and not found out. The power of observation and meticulous data recording, collecting, storing. There is lots of competency required. Not to give up after 7 years of research.. haha

[6:44 pm, 03/07/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
Applied R&D where your boss put you to conceptualise and develop products for the company is a different story.

Ken
[6:44 pm, 03/07/2020] +: I am in basic science, so yah funding also hard
[6:44 pm, 03/07/2020] +: Tier 3 finish no funding good luck to you

Jimmy Chew
[6:45 pm, 03/07/2020] +: yeah, not easy, my friend is research with a PC company, he always asks candidate, have you hack a software before 🤣

[6:46 pm, 03/07/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
Basic science is a different story.
Funding, boss support and feasibility of the R&D outcome is a question mark.
For applied R&D, fund is set aside, the boss support plus there is a market out there.
Then the chances of success is higher.

Ken
[6:47 pm, 03/07/2020] +: Many time is luck for life science... reading does help. But sometimes doing the protocol wrongly you found something new 🤣

Rama
[6:48 pm, 03/07/2020] +: It helps in cyber security issues

Jimmy Chew
[6:48 pm, 03/07/2020] +: always asking "Why" must be like that haha

Dong Liang
[6:50 pm, 03/07/2020] +: Worst if your supervisor only make you his runner.

Jimmy Chew
[6:53 pm, 03/07/2020] +: yeah, the researcher left becasue there were no concrete substance to show, R & D is R & D, nothing to show, too bad, but we being $$$ conscious will close projects haha

[7:03 pm, 03/07/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
Applied R&D is not just spending money only.
Must commoditiesd the product and market to customers.
Usually, the demand is already there, applied R&D conceptualised the demand and translate into technical specs and develop the product.

Ken
[7:04 pm, 03/07/2020] +: R&D basic also want to find something significant, can publish decent papers. To get there is to spend lor

[7:05 pm, 03/07/2020] ☸️  Danny 心:
Basic R&D is a different kettle of fish.
Usually takes place in university.
