[11:00 am, 03/03/2023] +REACH: πŸ“’ Topic πŸ“’

On 1 Mar 2023, the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced plans and updates to support the "Learn for Life" movement at this year's Committee of Supply debates. These efforts focus on nurturing diverse talents and expanding pathways, strengthening support for lifelong learning and building strong partnerships in education.

πŸ’¬  What are your views on the planned changes to the education system?

The key announcments include:

πŸ“Œ Full Subject Based Banding (SBB) in secondary schools

Starting with the 2024 Secondary 1 cohort, MOE will post Primary 6 pupils to secondary schools in three posting groups – 1, 2 and 3 – mapped to the Primary School Leaving Examination score ranges for Normal (Technical), Normal (Academic) and Express courses, respectively.

This is meant to ensure that schools admit students with diverse strengths, and students continue to have access to a wide range of schools. Schools can also create diversity within classes, with mixed form classes that comprise students offering subjects at different levels.

πŸ“Œ Keeping disadvantaged kids in school

A programme to help disadvantaged students remain in school will be rolled out nationwide in 2023. The Uplifting Pupils in Life and Inspiring Families Taskforce (Uplift) Community Network has been operating in 12 towns since 2022. It will now be extended to the 12 remaining towns, with the scheme covering about 1,300 students from 110 schools in 2023, up from some 900 students in 89 schools in 2022.

πŸ“Œ Reducing stakes of A-Level examinations

From 2026, students from junior colleges (JCs) and Millennia Institute (MI) will not need to count their fourth content-based subject in their university admissions, unless it improves their score. Mid-year exams will also be gradually removed for JC and MI students from 2024, in line with the scrapping of such exams at the primary and secondary levels by 2023. To give students more leeway to pursue their interests without worrying about results, the subject Project Work (PW) will be removed from the calculation of their university admission score, starting with the JC1 intake in 2024. They will be given a pass or fail instead of letter grades.

[0:00 pm, 03/03/2023] +REACH: Dear Contributors

We’d love to hear more from you on today’s topic 😊

We hope that we can keep the discussion related to the topic robust and active!

Megan 😊

[0:42 pm, 03/03/2023] +L: Haven't read in detail, so on first read through I'm pleased to see attention being given to revamping the education system.

While it's good that the process is adjusted, it's really the teaching methods and environment that I feel is quite broken (in Primary).

My kid is in P6 and he says the teachers are obsessed with the PSLE. They refer to it constantly, and they are doing tests each week to 'practice'. This isn't education. This is just hammering home a rigid set of thinking to pass a test.

[0:44 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: MOE, how is your follow up on this after minister parliamentary speech!?

[0:44 pm, 03/03/2023] +L: I feel that from age 9, kids lose their love of education in the Singapore System. There are a tiny proportion of kids I talk to that like school. They are just fed up with the lack of social engagement, the repetition, the focus on test scores.... Where is the joy of discovery? The creative problem solving? The emotional learning?

[0:45 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Totally agree!

[0:47 pm, 03/03/2023] +L: Changing the steps is one thing, but you have to change the thinking. Learn from other countries to see what works and what doesn't. How do we get kids to be excited about learning? How do we create an environment where no matter your parents income (ie private supplemental tuition), no matter your passion, no matter your background - Singapore is a place to realise your potential?

[0:48 pm, 03/03/2023] +L: Herein lies the problem: "– 1, 2 and 3 – mapped to the Primary School Leaving Examination score ranges for Normal (Technical), Normal (Academic) and Express courses, respectively."

[0:48 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: Reducing Stress is not going to happen..

Its is still far far away.

Exmple

Why a student who has taken

Sciences need to study One contrast Subject of humanities, like economics, or geography?

Many many times already told

Its the Syllabus that's the issue..

And MOE never talks about this

Superficial Changed not going to take away the actual pressure.

And How any primary schools vs Secondary vs JCs?

You think No stress at O levels?

Current System aim is For Filtering out the best of best, unless this changes, pressure won't go away.

[0:48 pm, 03/03/2023] +L: Again, obsessed with the PSLE....

[0:48 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: For all that we have learned from others, where is the follow up to ensure what speeches are made end up being implemented!?

[0:49 pm, 03/03/2023] +L: Ah yes - good point.

[0:50 pm, 03/03/2023] +L: I spoke to a firefighter this week, who literally talked a female student off the ledge. She was so stressed about school, pressure for results at home.... What are we doing to our kids?

[0:51 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: it takes 2 hands to claps -> school and society

[0:51 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: the issue is the society itself is toxic

[0:51 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: primary 1 already need tution

[0:52 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: in some cases play school already send for what enrichment classes

[0:52 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Individual schools lacking qualified support groups!?

[0:52 pm, 03/03/2023] +L: This could be good: "With full SBB in secondary schools, students will have greater flexibility to study more subjects at different levels that suit their interests, aptitudes and learning needs. There will no longer be separate Express, Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) stream courses. Students will be in mixed form classes where they can interact with peers with different strengths and interests."

However, how does it work?

[0:52 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: couple with welcoming of new migrants this will up the game for our local kids

[0:52 pm, 03/03/2023] +L: Yes - my kids' best friend hasn't been able to socialise because his parents load him up with so many 'enrichment' classes.

[0:52 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Agree

[0:52 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Wth!?

[0:53 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Blady nonsense!

[0:53 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Yes

[0:53 pm, 03/03/2023] +L: My kid's enrichment class is football 3 times a week. Something to get him out with friends, having fun.

[0:53 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: so on 1 hand i welcome the change; th eother hand i pnder how will the change be change given local are kiasu while new migrants are also scare to loose out

[0:53 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Great!

[0:54 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: den in the end society complaint GOVT screw up

[0:54 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: i really admire those who let their kids run while after school do whatever u want

[0:54 pm, 03/03/2023] +L: Yes, I welcome the acceptance that change is needed. Who is in charge of what that change is, and how it will be implemented is what concerns me.

[0:54 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: at least for pre - pri 2

[0:54 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: from a parents side

[0:55 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: being home the only place kids know where it is safe for them thus can relax

[0:55 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: not go home den have to face music of go that class go this class

[0:55 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: why results is poor

[0:55 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: why never attend this enrichment and that

[0:56 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: but i guess not many parents can achieve that at least for myself i am oppose to giving kids tuition or enrichment

[0:56 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Likewise

[0:56 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Same here!

[0:57 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Yes

[0:57 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: cos frankly what makes a person good and successful besides education is UPBRINGING !

[0:57 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Stress!

[0:57 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: is not about how many A to score , how enrich with skills one is at young age or what atas tuition Centre he or she goes to

[0:58 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Fortunate for you

[0:58 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: a pkid who cannot behave well in public will bound to be an arsehole down the road

[0:59 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: so if we wanna talk about changes be like china shut down those crazy tuition Centre

[0:59 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: and start educating the parents

[0:59 pm, 03/03/2023] +KL: 2004 they say PW very important now like this i dont hink is fair to ppl that did not get the seat in 2004

[0:59 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: actually parents also very stress with making a living hahahaha

[0:59 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: When will Singapore parents be educated!?

[1:00 pm, 03/03/2023] +Yinnia New: I want plan buy BTO tengh or nt

[1:00 pm, 03/03/2023] +KL: I dont think is fair to the local during that point of time till now. Which may have change the fate of many ppl

[1:01 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Check your eligibility with the new rules coming August

[1:02 pm, 03/03/2023] +Yinnia New: Oh l see

[1:04 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

US and the West freewheeling free and easy creative education is not the guarantee of success.

China education overtake US and the West - to produce more cutting edge invention.

[1:06 pm, 03/03/2023] +Fulgrim: The us just announced more sanctions on china tech companies

[1:06 pm, 03/03/2023] +Fulgrim: Really is trying to eliminate the competition

[1:08 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Singapore education that produce quality human labour force - is Singapore key resources to ensure Singapore success as Singapore has no natural resources.

If Singapore get our education wrong - Singapore future is doom.

[1:14 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Exam is a measure of how a student fare in how well the student pick up the knowledge.

If a student pick up the knowledge well, right amount of stress is a good motivator of success.

Stress is self induced by parents who insert in on their children.

As long as parents are not obsessed with grades but coax children to take exam positively, I can't see how parents need to be so stressful.

[1:26 pm, 03/03/2023] +Terrie Wong: I am really concerned at our education system which is still concerned with more drilling than love of learning.

- My granddaughter started having panic attacks from Sec 2 (last yr) about her mid-yr exams & is stressed that she cannot finish her homework in time for submission everyday.

She since had 3 panic attacks & depression.

- She's a straight A student & was Student of the Yr at Pr 6 in an international school before moving back to Singapore.

- I have had to send her to Polyclinics & A&E at KK Children's Hospital.

- Everybody I talk to have stories about friends whose kids have committed suicides.

- It's so alarming that we are thinking of taking my granddaughter out from the local school system.

- The school principal told me that 2 out of 3 students have this issue that's why they have 2.5 school counselors (one part-time)!

- In the pursuit of quality education, we have created a mental hell for our children...

[1:30 pm, 03/03/2023] +Grace: Oh no

[1:30 pm, 03/03/2023] +Grace: My heart breaks when I hear about how stressful it is for students

[1:32 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: Go imh n one will see how many young's arebi. There not working type but study type and is not NEW MANY YEARS AGO ALREADY LIKE THAT

[1:33 pm, 03/03/2023] +KL: The stress level will be much higher alt the competition is fairer.

[1:33 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: at primary school level or / and sec level shoudl induce more of love of learning

[1:34 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

For example, my siblings studied in RI and RGS.

But we don't insist our children do the same.

All our children are in neighborhood primary schools, secondary schools, neighborhood JCs, IB or polytechnics.

Almost all now studying or graduating in local Universities.

Our philosophy to our children, learn knowledge by trying your best, no need to be obsessed with grades, try hard in exam.

Our children don't get that type of stress that are feared.

[1:34 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: else how they are going to carry on LIFE LONG learning in time to come they will HATE books

[1:34 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: -> these shoudl be all school motto -> Our philosophy to our children, learn knowledge by trying your best, no need to be obsessed with grades, try hard in exam.

[1:34 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: and not about grades

[1:35 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: grades dun guarantee one life will be a bed of roses

[1:36 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

It is the mindset of parents and children about grades - that induced unnecessary stress.

It is not entirely about the system.

[1:38 pm, 03/03/2023] +Ah Heng: totally agree on this thus mentioned earlier is the society not the system .. is the society that mis interpret the system

[1:45 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Doesn't mean must go to elite primary school, secondary school, top JCs to succeed.

1. My son go to neighborhood JC - but still win the government scholarship for local university. Now with the government.

2. My siblings children - some graduate to join civil service with local universities.

3. Others are studying engineering, sustainability, medical, law etc. In local universities.

4. My close friend children study in RI, graduate in local Universities join civil service.

So there are many pathways to success.

Some more glamorous path, some normal path.

But destination is the same.

Stress are parents induced and self induced.

System don't induce us to stress.

Exam definitely will trigger stress

It is how people take it.

If no exam how to know whether a student acquire the right knowledge to qualify to enter the workforce?

[1:49 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: What is education?

To make a better living for yourself and your family. Nay, it's larger than  this sentence!

- - anonymity

[1:49 pm, 03/03/2023] +KL: Why after 18 years still have definition of neighborhood school . I thought is all school are good school ?

[1:56 pm, 03/03/2023] +Frankie Wee: Everybody has a achievements after graduation education. Each of them has a differ path career.

Nobody want to failed and backwards a lot effort time at age.

Make Singapore proud in future.

[1:57 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

My eyes swelling with tears.

ζˆ‘ε₯½ζ„ŸεŠ¨。

At least now lower income group, unemployed, students and retirees got a decent meal to eat at neighborhood coffeeshops...

[1:57 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

All HDB coffee shops to offer budget meal options by 2026.

Budget meals at coffee shops offering them now are typically priced at around S$3 to S$3.50.                                                                                                                               https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/budget-food-hawker-coffee-shop-hdb-budget-2023-3317681

[1:58 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: Not sure if are you talking about current situation or 10 yrs before.

[1:59 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Now.

Some of my children siblings are still studying local universities.

One still in JC.

[2:02 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: And everytime saying system is not wrong but parents and children are wrong .

If you tell your examples

I tell mine

For my daughter we never after gardes or not she studied in top primary schl.

She studied in neighborhood schl.

At home we don't teach or coach my girl

But when in primary 3

I remember she told me

She has trouble To do understand and unable to do HW

 So she asked for tuition

From that moment when ever she feels trouble she is askind and we hired tutor for her.

The MT is like hell for her, even with tutor she is feeling so stress, we keep remind her it's ok if mot is doing well, its ok to fail

But she feels she must pass, its her own goal to pass tje subejct,

And you keep blaming parents

[2:02 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Bring forward if possible

[2:03 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: "One rule of calibration is to objectively be a target of achievement. Collaboration is another subject that needs people's efforts in achieving a good outcome. How to calibrate using human as the 'object' to reach a higher order of tangibles? Is human a 'subject'? If so, what other innovative methods will do the job better?"

- - anonymity

[2:03 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: And may be whole yori family Top tier intellectuals and with strong Mind.

Mine is sensitive,

Yday parent teacher meet i went told teachers please don't scold my girl if she don't do H.W or class work. Don't say anything negative to her face, especially Infront of evryone.

[2:04 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: The child trying without tuition and finally asking for it is fair

[2:04 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Agree

[2:07 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: The subject combinations

Rubbish Thing,

Why not just follow simple system

All subjects less deapth,

What's there to study In depath and choose subjects

Do you know if a child don't take science

What she will be called In school?

Do you know the mental stress for child not being to get 65% to take Additional maths

Trust me you have zero knowledge

Go and Talk and ask children

Ask them to tell you

If at least 10% children feel.no stress and happy about going to school and studying

I will say apologies for you and the system

Just 10% Is enough

(But you know what, now children feels even the survey will ne watched, they scared to opem up and tell

They scared if it affects them.negativelu

[2:09 pm, 03/03/2023] +Terrie Wong: The kids today are very different from our time & even from a few years ago.

They are self-driven & our telling them 'it's OK to fail, we still love you & we can do something else about it' fall on deaf hears when they are down in that rabbit hole.

[2:10 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: I have only Daughter and i can afford Tuitions

What about low income or families with more children?

Anyway i headache when ever i talk,

About my daughter i can do whatever i can, and i keep remind her grades not important

Grades won't define

For us being Happy

Learning with zeal is whats important

We will continue to tell this

What ever my comments here are for the other children who don't have parents like me

Or whoz parents busy surviving and earning money

[2:11 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: Yes sadly this is the reality

[2:15 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: MOE already Have GEP

Why they keep filtering children?

Why not they follow Other goof international systems?

they are in wrong path overall

And keep trying to do this do that without even addressing actual problem,

Trust me next gen singaporeans will be robots without empathy compassion

Because that's what system is teaching them.

We cry later no use..

[2:15 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Well said

[2:16 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Is our education system being constantly tweet for the past 57 years with no stability  !?

[2:16 pm, 03/03/2023] +Grace: Ask a teen or young adult about their hobbies or happy memories of their youth... I wonder what answers we will get.

[2:17 pm, 03/03/2023] +Grace: Ask about when they last had free time to play and enjoy childhood

[2:17 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Be amazed

[2:17 pm, 03/03/2023] +Grace: When was the last time they had a meal with their family, calmly and leisurely

[2:17 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: 3 March, 2023

Quality vs Quantity, what's the endgame?

What is the quality of teachings and the menus too? Do exams qualify who against whom it may be concerned?

What is quantifiable?

The x number of graduates from ITE to Uni, these graduates year after year, the benefits over the unquantifiable costs to society? The good, the bad and the hidden truths?

      - in progress - -

[2:17 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: My time still catching spiders!

[2:18 pm, 03/03/2023] +Grace: I think we can do more to reduce the stress they face.

For one, they can start school later on specific days. Wake up with less stress, enjoy a morning with family on a weekday.

[2:18 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

The West education alot of free time.

But they are slowly losing their competitive edge to China.

Economically, technologically and financially.

[2:18 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: A work still in progress

[2:19 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Yes

[2:19 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

[2:20 pm, 03/03/2023] +Wai Xin: school don't teach more, get scolded by parents.

school teach too much, get scolded by parents.

🀣

[2:21 pm, 03/03/2023] +Wai Xin: teacher don't give more knowledge to prep students for exam, cannot go to the school parents want the kid to go, call teacher and scold teacher..

teacher give too much homework and exams too difficult, parents also call teacher to scold why exams so difficult.. "so difficult, I also dont know how to do, how you expect my kid to do!"

[2:22 pm, 03/03/2023] +Wai Xin: teachers are like prata.. kenna flip left flip right, the teachers are still kosong

[2:24 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: Hi Wait Xin, good afternoon!

Can you share insights as to exams being so tough nowadays or decades ago it was just as tough as today?

Is it a case of subjectivity or there are more to this business of examinations?

Thank you.

[2:25 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: So MOE is prata with onion, banana, cheese, ice cream etc all in one!?

[2:28 pm, 03/03/2023] +Wai Xin: i will say in all examinations there are deliberate design to find the outliers who will be awarded the A+ or A*, if exams are designed to make everyone score 100 pointers then everyone will end up having the same grade, like certificate of participation like that..

examinations are designed to make the majority people pass showing they have attain the requirements, and then find the distinguish top performers.

it has always been the case, even when we were kids i'm sure there will be questions that majority will find it ridiculous hard to do. and then there's this kid whizz who will just say "question easily done."

[2:29 pm, 03/03/2023] +Wai Xin: and in the real world, everything is relative. imagine u have 10 proposals put before you, you can only choose one to award the tender, you will have to find the most outstanding from them too.. so that's essentially examinations

[2:30 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: "young soldiers afraid of bullets while the old soldiers are afraid of bombs?

"小兡怕子弹,老兡怕炸弹?"

"the 'military academy' trainers teach the recruits how to use the weapons and in hope, one day when the real war does come, these well trained soldiers will execute their drills to almost perfection against all odds of winning or losing?"

[2:30 pm, 03/03/2023] +KL: Yes it a institution to  diff. I remember is like lemon theory. to find good and bad lemon .

[2:30 pm, 03/03/2023] +Wai Xin: the ministry is taking up the idea of, "let's not put them in the rat race too early", thus there's already a lot of doing away with examinations.. but in place will be continual assessments, which means no high stress peak period, but i give u constant stress every week

[2:30 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Nice

[2:31 pm, 03/03/2023] +Wai Xin: ultimately we need to ask ourselves, at what point in a person life should he/she be exposed to stress of the real world

[2:31 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: Calibration, the logical rule of engagements!

Thank you, Wait Xin!

[2:31 pm, 03/03/2023] +Wai Xin: do we want to wait until the person has grown to adulthood, get first job and then feel like "omg why so much stress"

[2:31 pm, 03/03/2023] +Wai Xin: πŸ™‚

[2:32 pm, 03/03/2023] +Terrie Wong: Yes but when so many kids & young people commit suicide & more have such ideation, who do we blame?

Shouldn't we try to do something before it gets worse?

[2:33 pm, 03/03/2023] +Terrie Wong: Before we lose more young people & more are scarred for life?

[2:34 pm, 03/03/2023] +Wai Xin: yes of course we need to do something, but this we is we as a country, as a society, and as a community, as individual adults with or without children too.

we know that it takes a village to raise a kid, but nowadays kids aren't raised by village, they are competing in their respective kampong instead. not just with classmates in school but with their cousins in the family, with neighbour kids, etc

[2:34 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: 12 years old jumped to death from a  high rise hdb block and landed right below in front of the father supposedly for thinking the grades will not please the parents!

[2:34 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: Decision making time...

Example of the recent Toyota succession, soon... Toyota in the coming CEO/President is 53 years of age.

Many Japanese felt that 53 years of age is not RIPE time to steer Toyota into the future of EVs?

Thank you, Wait Xin.

[2:35 pm, 03/03/2023] +Wai Xin: so what i'm saying is, let's be kinder and nurturing to our next generation. when we are open to that, the ministry will respond to that too

[2:35 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: A good direction.

Thanks again, Wait Xin

[2:36 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: EV is relatively new so no prevalent bench mark

[2:36 pm, 03/03/2023] +Wai Xin: happy to share my pennies, for what's its worth..

[2:37 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: Hi Andrew, good afternoon!

Sad outcome, and WHY! Something or someone must REFLECT on this sad case!

Thank you!

[2:38 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Moving away from emphasis on paper qualifications and acceptance that the child has done their best must be stress.

[2:38 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: Do or die! This case for Toyota, they are lagging so much so that they need to SPEED UP or bye bye!

Thank you.

[2:39 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: If exams are for how much child actually knows and understands

Is fine

But from PSLE

Itself

Exams became Key defining factor

Psle wch schl to go

Sec 2 which subjects to take,

Rather than whther child interested in that subject or not

But how much he scored!

This is the problem

There is a lot of difference

[2:42 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: MOE says Grades don't define,

But in reality

It's deffinatly does

A child i know last yr Sec2

Didn't scored well in science,

So despite he likes physics more,

Schl didn't gave me option

Told Score not enough!(same thing happened with other girl i know, becz she missed a WA her score yr end in maths lower a bit..she denied taking A maths)

So you go n tell the child

Exams won't define

He will laugh at you

[2:42 pm, 03/03/2023] +KL: I dont think the stress level will decrease. 。 u will competed against the smartest of the smartest.  Exmple if u take Science combine is easy to get A cos all smart ppl in pure science. etc. So this push will have pro and cons. The push also wont achieve it goal like the project work since 2004.

[2:43 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Can we really strike a balance!?

[2:43 pm, 03/03/2023] +KL: In fact stress will increase but will find the smartest kids in shortest time

[2:43 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

The last thing we want from our education is to produce low quality students with low quality workforce

That can't do a good jobs in r&d, bankers, engineers, doctors, lawyers, accountants, computer scientists, sustainability, architects etc.

What is the use of relax education where we produce students and workforce that can't do the jobs?

Investors and business will just leave the country - and we can go back to Kampong lives to plant vegetables.

[2:43 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: Hi Suma, good afternoon.

What a good analogy and contrary of exams and re-examine.

Passion and Purpose should be the key drivers to learn than comes education!

Talent will surface itself like a floating cork in a POND! A pond and not an Ocean.

Contrary, many hopeful parents educators and especially policymakers are calibrating success out of purposeful policies...

Thank you.

[2:44 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Soulless hydroponics food industry.

[2:44 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: And some one here told silly thing

Sorry ya

Just becz i die oneday

I don't die everyday!!

Same wise

Just becz as adult i may face the Stress,

Pushing stress on Children

Is silly

[2:44 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: What causes STRESS for humans?

[2:44 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Hugh!?

[2:45 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: Normal exams will give bit Stress, which may prepare child for future

But the exams which starts from P6 in Singapore is Defining the Child future

[2:45 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: Asian MINDSETS?

[2:45 pm, 03/03/2023] +Wai Xin: yea.. that's the inconvenient hard truth, we need to help our people to stay ahead of the regional and global trend, take up higher value work. so that we can afford to buy imported resources from outside ..

[2:45 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: This is System fault

Not child or parents

[2:45 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Agree

Full Subject Based Banding (SBB)

1. Previously, in Secondary schools, early streaming to Express, Normal Acad, Normal Tech - are to help students with different learning abilities to adapt to the learning pace. This is well-meaning.

But it has some problems :-

a. It stratified students too early in their learning age - may unconsciously let elitism seeps in, into the student early education.

b. Some students mature earlier while some students boom later.

Early streaming will put late boomers into disadvantage position.

c. Some students in Express may do well in some subjects, but not in others.

Likewise, some students in Normal may not do well in some subjects, but do well in others.

2. Hence full subject base banding - will allow students regardless of streaming who are able to do well in certain subjects to learn more and those who are weaker in certain subjects to learn at a more gradual pace.

I feel that SSB - is an improvement over streaming.

3. The fine tuning of A level grading for entry to Universities - is an attempt to reduce exam load to promote more areas of interest.

If this does not reduce the qualities of learning from students - I don't see any problem.

4. The Uplift of disadvantaged of students - is one way to ensure that every students, even disadvantaged students will not be left behind - and ensure that they will be given every opportunities to succeed through quality education.

5. I support the latest fine-tuning to the Education system - to make it more digestible.

[2:49 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: This last sentence

This is what shows the

Degrading of People

What's wrong with Being a former!!

What's the use of being number one Country in the world,

If the people are not happy, and not peaceful

[2:50 pm, 03/03/2023] +KL: frankly Sg determine smart by A level . not O level but O level is a prerequisite .

[2:51 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Will the future determine poly with A level minimum!?

[2:52 pm, 03/03/2023] +KL: that why it lead to other issue , if A level CCC vs top 20% in poly who win is another issue

[2:52 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: What's the Quality of teachers?

Why the need for tutoring?

Are the latest sciences of all sorts syllabus good enough for the next 3-5 years?

[2:52 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Something is wrong if tuition is a prerequisite!

[2:55 pm, 03/03/2023] +Yinnia New: I will learn drive for training at BBCD soon

[2:56 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: Temperament and Stamina!

Either the pitch is too high or the teachers are too low to teach?

MOE needs to turn all stones, starting from the syllabus to each school and lastly, teaching competencies!

Impatience teachers (temperament) will be advised to re-think and perhaps drink more coolite!

Thank you.

[2:56 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Hugh!?

[2:57 pm, 03/03/2023] +Yinnia New: Yes! Can we teach u how drive test training at BBCD soon

[2:58 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: 😳🀷‍♂️

[2:58 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: SBB

Or Full SBB

Bla bla

Is not needed before JC

Let all children take same subjects

If really want to treat specially for the Top tier,

Let them filtet by anothet GEP and groom next gen scientists

Why in indeapth Geography history

Instead of one Humanity subject where all basic Information covered

Same goes with sci

If you look at other curriculums they have

Science

Social

Maths english Mother tongue

Remaining are arts sports and May include Computers as one subject

[2:59 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: Instead of making it simple

This SBB again will become same like whats happening now,

In the end educators will be pressurised to deal,

I hv great empathy towards educators here, after healthcare this group of people having stressed life than anyone else.

Poor thing

[3:00 pm, 03/03/2023] +Yinnia New: I will pay $3000 apply for membership car L at BBCD

[3:00 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Poor thing the children followed by the parents!

[3:00 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: All universities from local to overseas have their minimum standard to admit fresh students.

The second language is not a requirement for all overseas Uni but credit would be awarded for it.

[3:00 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Yes

[3:01 pm, 03/03/2023] +Frankie Wee: Let me share the future.

Nowadays child start to know mobile app smartphone (iOS and Android) when they child understand about smart work education and play part of role.

No different from who are clever of skill level. Old time Singapore use to educate Pri 1 to 8 then long way

[3:02 pm, 03/03/2023] +Frankie Wee: I think education don’t a lot stress cope it’s a new system

[3:03 pm, 03/03/2023] +Yinnia New: Pls save money future

[3:03 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: Let's think deeper, STEM is relevant!

Second language perhaps is a culture and "don't forget one's roots" thing.

The reality is many younger gen will aspire to study abroad (if they can afford or scholarship) and maybe to remain overseas for a longer time.

[3:04 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: "chicken or eggs" or worse "no chick" !

You laugh, you laugh!

[3:08 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: These BRAIN things are such wonderful wonders!

Some brains pre-wired for sciences while others are good at languages and some are good at arts or sports!

Let's think deeper to 'calibrate' the human brain and not forget the coming of the AI brains?

[3:08 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Likewise which came first - chicken or the egg!?

[3:08 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: When a chick-less comes....

Dare you laugh...lol

[3:09 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: Pls ask policymakers, they make meat out of NOTHING...

That's a deeper thought...think think, Thinking!

[3:09 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: I am surprised yday

Computers or IT ie not even a baisc subject

I know that most international schls introducing this subject from Secondary

Again in this aspect Its lacking innovation

(One side i thought like this, n suddenly again i felt my goodness glad that they don't have if not MOE will even put SAPs Dot net jawa bla bla and children would have suffered)

"What, why and How much, is the key point"

In Education

Let youngsters know every basics and latet when they near UNI

They choose the path they want to go.

System shoulr be like this.

But now its like everything is tooo much

Too much syllabus

Too much deapth

Too much complicated

This is causing stress for educators as well as children

And Parents

[3:10 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Prawns , fish and crab too being cultivated!

[3:11 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: Hi Frankie, you just scored a goal!

Basic computer literacy is a must. As for higher or highest pitch, let those wired brains attempt it Or worse thing, jump off!

Thank you.

[3:11 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: Between i heard

That raffels got Computers ad subject

My girl schl don't hv

And the MOE all good schls, as if all are same

MOE shows clear discrimination between schools

Between students

Any system which discriminates, we can conclude that its not a right system.

[3:12 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: Yday my girl schl got PTM about Subject combinations for secondary

[3:12 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Mo chalk board in class rooms but ipad or laptops.

[3:13 pm, 03/03/2023] +Smiley face: Are we trying very hard to create human bots to pitch against the bots?

"To comprehend and to communicate either orally or in good writing skills"

Pls don't read too much into this Language...

Thank you.

[3:19 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: The less we talk about language Syllabus the better

Almost all my girl's friends hates Mother tongue

This is what MOE achieved

A pathetic way of Teaching MT

Instead of instilling joy to Learn speak MT

They succesfully made the children

Hate a MT

[3:20 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Wrong approach!?

[3:23 pm, 03/03/2023] +Suma pamu: Total wrong approach

πŸ˜“πŸ˜“πŸ˜“

1. Full SBB is good as it removes the social stigma against NA and NT students.

2. Reducing stakes of A-Level examinations is great, to allow students to take risks in pursuing their interests without worrying about results.

3. Consider the removal of cut-off point advantage (due to school affiliation) in Secondary School posting as a step to have fair competition.

[6:22 pm, 03/03/2023] +Sunshine Pooh: I didnt mention anything about US style of education

[6:23 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Then pse suggest.

[6:24 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Singapore per capita GDP ppp - 3rd highest in the world.

[6:26 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: This is a problem.  So promising but still not up to the mark. We'll educated, good jobs, diversity of businesses limited.  Will we ever see our own bill gates, warren buffet, elon musk, ambhavani, Jack ma helping a Singapore global company as CEO!? We don't even have enough high level profile females!

[6:26 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Well done

[6:28 pm, 03/03/2023] +Sunshine Pooh: psle shld not be a marker at all. let that formative years be time for development, curiosity, exploration, communication. build on the character... have tests but not to define you from the classmates.. but as a learning journey.... that's how u drive the passion to learn. a mammoth of a task because it's requires an overhaul of the whole syallabus & MINDSET.

[6:28 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Totally agree!

[6:28 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Ist we need to know how big is our domestic market.

If we have domestic market like US, China, India or Indonesia - we will have many CEOs.

To break into international market is not easy.

Look at how China CEO penetrate US market - now all sanctions.

[6:30 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: We are a nation with no natural resources but our own people, the determination to succeed!  We will slowly but surely make our mark in the world as a tiny red dot!

[6:31 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Many CEOs are produced in countries with very large domestic market - in which locals buy their products to become big - before expanding overseas.

This is not because of education.

But because of many factors like market opportunities, size of consumers, finances etc.

[6:32 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

The production of the number of CEOs don't define the success of a country.

Per capita GDP is.

[6:33 pm, 03/03/2023] +Rama: Agree but yet we are seen  as capable achieve the impossible

[6:37 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Production of few CEOs only define the success of a few individuals.

But what happens to the rest of 99% population?

Per capita GDP, median household income - define the success of an entire country - as wealth are spread throughout the whole population.

If our education system didn't bring about this success by giving our population well paid jobs to achieve such per capita GDP.

Then what brings about our success?

[6:38 pm, 03/03/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

So are we going to rip out our education system that brings success to us?

" The longer essay and the meanings of re-examining?"

What is education?

To make a better living for yourself and your family. Nay, it's larger than this sentence!

Yea?

"To teach humans to be useful to one another and to learn to live a better life. Regardless of a resourceful or resource-less nation, to educate is just one part of a society to adjust the equilibrium of life regardless of socioeconomic status whether you are newly born or in your retirement time. Most importantly, all ages of life matter, it matters most to have adequate means to journey to the end of life! That's what life is all about!"

- - anonymity

What about the machinery of  education?

Time after time, from the Roman empire onto the dynasty of the mighty kingdoms of the Chinese and the Indian. One commonality is the course of these civilisations each took upon, the victories and the downfalls of each kingdom! One lesson is education (literacy) does not guarantee success! Its all about "people to people" and trusting one another!

Segregation of Society?

How to slice a society into segments of productivity units? One method is to intervene at an early age through targeted education from skills to higher knowledge and it must be relevant. All because of allocation of resources and assets to proper outcomes.

Midway or Mid-point?

To segregate is not a bad thing to do. However, this systemic process must also include "midway" whereby some people are able to rejoin into a higher order of education. That is for example, those young children at the lower end of the educational basket can bounce into any train of training, this case from technical onto a higher learning path! Should the barrier to enter onto a higher speed train of education be so tough? Nay, please do not!

Fun or Fear?

It is critical to say the "business of  education" needs more FUN! In this business, there are many living economics from private coaching or tuition to upskilling and training. All mother's up to a few mental themes, that is 'competition and relevant', 'do or die', or 'cannot afford to fall back'!

Where is the element of fun? Will the absence of fun or blinded fun affects the future of a willing and eager learning people, aka workforce? Either you have a big pool of 'continuing' eager learners or a bigger pool of dire straits 'burnout' adults that hated exams and re-examine? Are all  these realities beyond comprehension? Yea, that's real!

It is of paramount importance to create fun over fear, for fear is the results of embedded years of anxiety and these negativity will end up to mountains of penn-up ANGER across all strata of a society! These negativities are what many experts brand it as social challenges or to some experts would classified it as an unhappy lots of people! Aren't these truths or conspiracy theories according to some policymakers and expert educators?

By pulling a few plugs here and there and expect the "movies of teaching" will play it out best?

Let's re-search the purpose of education and educating our young ones. In the microwave of things, let's reshuffle what are the achievables, areas that need to be improved and what will be the work in progress even the future is commonly known as the unknown?

Simply, it's beyond the reality? Yea!

     - - in progress - -
