Many countries are facing rising prices cdue to the impact of the ongoing Russia- Ukraine conflict and continued supply chain disruptions, even countries that are oil and gas exporters are facing higher prices. ComfortDelGro announced in March that it would temporarily increase fares for all its taxis from Apr 4 to cushion the impact of the recent increase in fuel prices and that the move will be reviewed by the end of May and removed if fuel prices ease.

“The CDC vouchers are a small, but I hope, a meaningful gesture of support for all Singaporeans during this time of rising prices," said the Finance Minister. Authorities are monitoring the situation, and we will not hesitate to implement more measures to help households and businesses if the situation worsens, he said.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What do think about the recent CDC voucher disbursement? What are your views on the Government’s efforts in providing ongoing support to cushion the price impact for Singaporeans, especially for lower- and middle-income families? How have you been coping with the price and fare increases?

๐Ÿ“ŒThe disbursement was brought forward from the third quarter of the year to mid-May, amid a global rise in prices that has pushed up business and living costs. In addition, two tranches of CDC vouchers worth S$200 each will be given to all Singaporean households in 2023 and 2024. Shoppers will also be able to use the vouchers at major supermarkets.

๐Ÿ“ŒUp to 1.22 million Singaporean households can claim S$100 worth of Community Development Council (CDC) vouchers from Wednesday (May 11) to be used at more than 16,000 participating heartland merchants and hawkers.

๐Ÿ“ŒThe latest tranche of CDC vouchers, meant to help households with daily expenses while supporting heartland hawkers and merchants, is part of a S$560 million Household Support Package announced by Finance Minister Lawrence Wong in Budget 2022.

[10:15 am, 13/05/2022] +Boon: It’s great and highly appreciated at the individual and family level. Thank you. The hand outs are not sustainable at the national level.

[10:19 am, 13/05/2022] +Boon: Singapore needs thoughtful policies and better plans to address the increasingly high cost of living. What are the goals eg/ reduce unnecessary admin reporting burden on merchants re: the NEA plastic bag proposal,  that we should all be striving for?

[10:20 am, 13/05/2022] +Uncle Law: It's a good gesture to help Singaporeans and by spending, it helps the hawkers.

[10:20 am, 13/05/2022] +Uncle Law: Perhaps is good to give based on household number?

[10:20 am, 13/05/2022] +Uncle Law: If household only 1 person vs 5 person

[10:21 am, 13/05/2022] +Caleb: +1

[10:21 am, 13/05/2022] +Caleb: +1

[10:24 am, 13/05/2022] +Boon: The perception is that right now, Singapore is all about increasing costs including taxi fares, and govt is handling out subsidies that people are not finding sufficient. If we believe the inflation and cost of living will persist over the next few years, we need concrete and actionable plans soon to ensure the economy and people can better navigate thru this inflationary period.

[10:26 am, 13/05/2022] +Uncle Law: Perhaps on top of these CDC vouchers, gov can look into giving essential items vouchers for oil, rice, noodle

[11:08 am, 13/05/2022] +Noraini: I got a shock when receive utility bill this month.  The increment very ↗️

[11:12 am, 13/05/2022] +65 8899 6124: I'm still very shocked at the rate being paid.. I've seen jobs currently still offering $6.00 an hour.. how to cope??

[11:22 am, 13/05/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

The CDC voucher does provide some cushion to the price increase in food.

But other items price increases are also steep.

[11:29 am, 13/05/2022] +JkL: Not only steep  but permanently higher and higher.. CDC shoukd adjust accordingly.

[11:30 am, 13/05/2022] +Ken Loh: Very hard to control…

Supply demand, we have to buy within our means.

The money government give eventually tax from us.

More they given more tax will be required to run those scheme

[11:31 am, 13/05/2022] +Ken Loh: CDC voucher not everyone needs it. Maybe there are options to donate back

[11:32 am, 13/05/2022] +Ken Loh: Or opt out so do give those that are more in need or divert back to other services that required those money more

[11:34 am, 13/05/2022] +Ken Loh: Logistic is crazy hard. And more wastage hence not that direction.

[11:36 am, 13/05/2022] +Ken Loh: Done that kind of food drive. Is more for awareness.

Most charity would prefer cash as supply demand always different. And sometime donated expiry soon, which cause a lot of wastage.

If you go to house of those needy, most have excess in rice, can food etc. put till expire.

[11:37 am, 13/05/2022] +Uncle Law: The vouchers to offset at supermarket. Scan qr like CDC vouchers

[11:37 am, 13/05/2022] +BL: Make it easy for higher income families to donate their cdc vouchers?

[11:38 am, 13/05/2022] +Ken Loh: Rough number 20 to 30% rice donation goes to waste.

Specially the scoop ones.. contaminants the rice, end up more cost to throw away.

[11:39 am, 13/05/2022] +Ken Loh: Not just higher income, give people the option to be generous. To opt out, so lesser logistic. Then again now is E voucher should relative easier to handle returns

USA (Reuters) - with the rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage jumping from less than 3 per cent last year to more than 5 per cent,...

The US economy is facing its toughest inflation problem since the 1970s and early 1980s, when prices at one point rose at an annual rate of 14.5 per cent and then-Fed chief Paul Volcker used punishing interest rates to twice throw the economy into recession. The unemployment rate climbed above 10 per cent...

"Nothing in the economy works, the economy doesn't work for anybody without price stability,"Mr Powell said.

[1:07 pm, 13/05/2022] +KSFoong: How? Which boss will follow? Everything goes to demand and supply. After a while, things will settle. There will be a time when employers could offer a rate than employees willing to take. Now many people still have many options. They choose not to work and stay waiting for rates lower than their expectation.

[1:57 pm, 13/05/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

1. Food prices are permanent, once increase will almost never come down. This will be reflected in the high food prices in food court, hawker centre, coffee shop and f&b retail shops.

2. Energy price are temporary, it fluctuates depending on world crude prices.

But those who sign a contract with the energy company will have to stick to the contract price until the contract ends.

3. Logistics prices are also temporary - as freight prices increases because of global supply disruption.

The moment pandemic disruption clear and the world find ways to work around Ukraine war disruption, logistics price will drop.

5. Global climate change have bring about drought and flood that impact agriculture output and affect prices.

Though climatic conditions fluctuates, but chances that it will become worst.

6. Taking the above scenarios into account - more macro approaches to contain prices may be needed.

7. Also look like CDC voucher to cushion against food price hike - similar to SCC rebate, u-save rebate to cushion against energy price and gst voucher to cushion against gst increase - could be a permanent features.

[1:59 pm, 13/05/2022] +Rama: Worth looking into

[2:05 pm, 13/05/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Macro approaches to tackle the current steep price increases could be:-

1. Keep our currency exchange gradually strong to keep pace with imported inflation, and adjust it down once imported inflation taper down - without impacting export.

2. Keep our interest rate up to tame domestic inflation.

3. Must ramp up our domestic production of food crops with hi-tech, vertical farming like producing eggs, meat substitute, vegetables, hi-tech hi-output rice etc.

4. Best time to go for renewable energy eg. Solar, hydrogen and even fail-safe nuclear to be self sufficient in energy supply without relying on imported oil and gas - as the high fuel prices will make renewable energy more competitive.

5. Find ways to improve the income of each individual and household - to tackle the runaway inflation.

Conglomerates have bought out several smaller companies as the meat substitute market is predicted to grow rapidly.

[2:12 pm, 13/05/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

More pervasive meat substitute to tackle global climate - as there are less fertile ground to grow crop for domestic animals.

Meat substitute could be the next wave in meat production in which Singapore have the hi-tech advantage to produce meat for domestic as well as for the export market.

Hong Kong retail rental market to sink while Singapore’s swims

thanks to quarantine-free tourist arrivals, end of Covid-19 restrictions.

Analysts predict rents for retail properties in Singapore will rise by 1 to 2 per cent this year, while Hong Kong will see a decline of between 5 and 15 per cent.

The Hong Kong market will not fully recover until the return of tourists, who account for up to 40 per cent of retail sales historically

But if we build solar panels - we get from the sun foc.

If we produce hydrogen gas - we get H2O, solar from sea water and sun foc.

If we run our failsafe nuclear reactor - once incepted, nuclear energy are almost infinite.

Then we can control our energy price without letting it rise and rise - oblivious of global fluctuations in oil and gas prices - in which we have no control.

Is failsafe nuclear reactor safe?

Same question to ask :-

Is gas safe?

Is crude oil safe?

Is hydrogen gas safe?

If they are not store in a safe manner, all these gas will also explode and pose danger.

Follow science and safety measures - then they will be safe.

Similarly, if nuclear fission are done in a failsafe manner according to science and safety measures - then nuclear energy is safe.

Supposedly so like any other rice.

[5:16 pm, 13/05/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Can only support up to 30% local rice consumption.

1 hectares land produce 6 tons - unless can go vertical and stack.

If 20 floor buildings means 120 tons of rice in 1 hectares of land.

But Singapore annual consumption is 347,000 metric tons.

So we still need to import rice.

To: Our Distinguished Ministers And All Our Honorable Members

"The Interest Rates Race Of Nations" (้‡‘่žๆˆ˜)

In motion:

0.25 + 0.50 + (0.50) + (0.50) = 1.75% by Christmas 2022?

Going into Q2/2023...perhaps another 1% increase? It will become 2.75% closing into 3%. During Paul Volcker times, it went almost 20%!

The trillions of dollars questions?

Will the Fed monetary policies of 2.75% or 3.0% save and stabilise goods & services that will have an immediate and simultaneous effects on global economies, going into Q3/Q4-2023? What will unemployment be? Whats the trajectory like into 2030-32?

In Bernanke's era, the Fed, ECB, BOJ all implemented Quantitative Easings policies of cheap money. Can the Fed 'collect back' these monies?

Today, after 15 years or longer of these QEs, perhaps, the world is OVERFLOW with cash or drowning in CASH! How to DEFLATE mountains of assets (+) and debts (-) at a few go?

This becoming a real case of 3% interest rate hikes or the Fed needs to raise up to 8%? What the final end point - this interest rate race from the Fed triggers to all global banks and lives?

A Tribute To Paul Volcker :
