Going grocery shopping might soon burn an even bigger hole in consumers' pockets, as prices of non-cooked food such as seafood and meat is expected to continue rising even beyond this year as a result of global shocks, a review by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) showed on Thursday (April 28).

The cost of electricity and gas will also be pushed up this year, as the recent surge in global energy prices raises the prices of oil-related items. MAS said that overall, the surge in global energy and agricultural commodity prices will raise domestic inflation for fuel, electricity and gas and non-cooked food, which will in turn feed into higher prices for transport and food services over time.

๐Ÿ’ฌ How have you been preparing for the impact of inflation and rising prices? Have you seen the recent announcements surrounding the disbursement of the $100 CDC vouchers? What are your views on the Government's response and support measures to tide through the cost pressures thus far?

The rise in global food prices will also pass through to Singapore's import prices, which will lead to higher domestic non-cooked food inflation over time. But the increase is expected to be gradual in the short term and more modest than global indices, MAS said.

Core inflation - which excludes accommodation and private transport costs - already hit a 10-year high in March. Both core inflation and headline inflation rose in the first three months of this year, compared with the last quarter of 2021. Higher electricity and gas and non-cooked food inflation accounted for around a third of the increase in core inflation, MAS observed.

As consumer demand recovered, inflation for discretionary services and retail goods also rose. This includes higher prices for hawker and restaurant meals, taxi and private-hire car services, sport services and other fees, cinema tickets and charges to places of interest. Import costs rose more strongly for travel goods and handbags, apparel and clothing accessories, and photographic apparatus and equipment.

[1:26 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

1. This current inflation - fuel by covid pandemic, global supply disruption, Ukraine war, Countries restricting export of commodities like palm oil etc - has bring about an unprecedented spike in prices across many products eg. food, energy, transport etc --- inducing tremendous cost pressure on every individual and household.

2. Hence I suggest individual and household prepare 2 spreadsheets to track how we can cope with such cost pressure.

Notice that individual and household spend on "gut feeling" - and don't systematically track the spendings they make and how much they get in income every month.

Hence it will come as a shock to many individuals and household - when they realise they overspend and have been digging into their savings - if they don't keep track of their monthly spendings and income.

Only with such systematic tracking of their cash inflow and outflow - will people be wise - how they spend and how they should earn - to ensure they spend wisely and save wisely for their retirement and for rainy days.

[1:32 pm, 29/04/2022] +Eunice Chia: it's possible, my friend who has more than BRS set aside at 55 years old, says any amounts above BRS can be withdrawn quite easily....it's like Paynow to your account where you can make withdrawal.

it's also possible to have more than $1m in CPF....the power of compounding interest.

[1:41 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

*Preparing a monthy Income Spreadsheet*

Individuals and household should prepare a monthly (or yearly) "Income Spreadsheet" to keep track of their monthly and yearly income - to ensure the money they earn can finance their monthly and yearly expenses and keep sufficient monthly savings for their retirements or for rainy days.

Income Sources could be :-

1. Salary

a. Bonus

b. Allowance

etc.

2. Business profit

3. Rental income

4. Passive income such as :-

a. deposit interest

b. bond interest

c. insurance payout

d. dividends

e. sale of capital assets - eg. shares, insurance mature, properties etc

f. CPF payout

etc

5. Government payout such as:

a. CDC voucher

b. U save rebate

c. town council rebate

d. GST voucher

etc.

Income spreadsheet can be "moving Income spreadsheet" - where real moving income are kept live - month to month.

Or

Income spreadsheet can be "aggregated yearly income spreadsheet" - and average out - by dividing total income per year by 12 months. (This method is less stressful and surplus income earn every month can roll over to the next month).

[1:52 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

*Preparing a monthly Spending spreadsheet*

Spending spreadsheet should be prepared month by month - and should be a "moving monthly spending spreadsheet" --- to ensure that every dollar spends are recorded - and every items spend are recorded.

This will ensure individual and household have sufficient income to cover their expenses, able to track which item categories has increase in prices and there will be sufficient savings every month (as planned - for retirement and rainy days).

Spending item categories can be :-

1. Food

a. Groceries

b. Eat out

2. Power/Water bill

3. Communication devices

a. Handphone monthly subscription

b. Telephone/Internet monthly subscription

4. Transport

a. Bus/MRT/Taxi/Private Hire

b. Car owners - fuel, road tax, maintenance, car park charges etc.

5. Medical

a. Clinic

b. Hospitals

c. Pharmacy/Self medication/TCM

etc

6. Education

a. School fees/University fees/Polytechnic fees/ITE fees etc

b. Books

c. Miscellaneous

etc

7. Luxury spendings

a. Tours

b. Shopping

c. eShopping

d. Restaurant

etc

[2:12 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

1. The discipline of keeping the 2 spreadsheets - will ensure "finger tips" tracking of our income and spendings - instead of relying on "gut feelings" --- as people tend to spend frivolously or lavishly if we don't keep track how much we earn and how much we spend.

2. By keeping the detail spending item categories - will also trigger an alert - if we notice that the items we spend has gone up higher than the previous months --- indicating price rises and inflation of that particular items has taken place.

If we notice that some particular items has risen too much and eat into our income --- then we can take remedial actions :-

a. Find substitutes to replace the items in which price has risen too high.

b. Find alternative means to boost our income to cover the inflation.

c. Both responses - will ensure individuals and household - can help to maintain our cost of living and standard living --- by actively countering and hedging against the inflation and price rises.

d. The 2 spreadsheets - are the most systematic, objective and factual tools - for us to tackle the cost pressure.

e. Failure to do the above --- many will discover at the end of the year --- that individuals and household could have overspent ---- because there are no tools to systematically track our expenses and income - to enable us to mount a response early to cover the rising cost.

f. By having a "finger tip" knowledge of our monthly income and how much we spend ---- we will be very conscious on what items we can spend on and what items we should look for a substitute.

And we will actively look for new income source, once we notice we are low on income or savings.

3. At the end of every month, we will be very certain that we can manage and control the unprecedented inflation - cause by the runaway price increases mainly due to external factors beyond our control.

[2:43 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

1. Some people may say, Ok to hedge against rising cost - I can find substitute in food, groceries, cheaper handphone, take bus/mrt rather than taxi, private hire or drive a car.

2. But what about finding alternative income sources especially for middle and lower income - cannot be taking 2 or 3 jobs.

3. I will suggest the following :-

a. By conscientiously keeping the 2 spreadsheets - Income and Spendings - I will maintain a discipline to ensure I have savings for the month.

b. When accumulate enough savings for a couple of month, or get a bonus, or there are insurance payout, dividend, interest, mature capital assets - can look for other income sources like :-

a. Make placement on SSB (Singapore Saving Bonds) - can place up to $200,000 - bond interest for this month is 2.09% - and will poise to increase next month - due to FED hawkish stance on higher interest rate to tackle inflation on 4-5 May 2022.

b. Placement in short term (2 years to 3 years) Saving insurance - pay close to 1.8% to 2%.

c. Placement into Bank Fixed Deposit - 1.25% to 1.4% ---- poised to increase next month in tandem to FED interest rate hike.

d. Long term - Top-up CPF (Voluntary contribution) - 2.5%.

e. Other more risky investment - eg. good shares, structured deposit (those with higher risk appetite) - but may lose the capital if not careful.

The above will help us to accumulate wealth on top of our earnings in salary, business profit - to cushion the higher inflation.

Of course the recent government payout will also help - eg. CDC voucher, GST voucher, U-save etc.

Aggregating the above efforts - many lower and middle income earners can cushion and cover the impact of unprecedented inflation --- and yet still maintain our same standard of living while keep the cost-of-living in check.

Someone raise some distress signal.

The minister ask the officer to take down the names of those comments and to follow up with them

[3:08 pm, 29/04/2022] +jimmy chew: I was thinking if I were to come from a Middle income family. I would have gone to uni and  my starting pay would be 1500 @ 1979 for a grad

[3:08 pm, 29/04/2022] +Rama: Any outcome !?

[3:09 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

[3:11 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Many people start from a low base and work their way up.

No one is born to a rich family.

[3:11 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Not everyone is born to a rich family.

[3:13 pm, 29/04/2022] +jimmy chew: Haha my dad is and squandered all. I am the third generation

Agreed. Education is the game changer.

It happens to many people I know.

[3:19 pm, 29/04/2022] +Ken Loh: Travelling is not even an option, now I earn my parents combine income at their peak also not higher than mine.

My income just average grad pay

[3:20 pm, 29/04/2022] +Ken Loh: Singapore education is one of the ways to get out of the cycle. And many scheme to get educated. I am not scholar anyway.. just a average pass degree ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Juggling school and work

[3:21 pm, 29/04/2022] +jimmy chew: My time only 3 percent of primary one Cohort makes it to uni. Nowadays it 25 percent.

[3:22 pm, 29/04/2022] +Ken Loh: My time also not that many.. I was in a sector that not enough engineers hence got cheap and easier access to local Uni.

[3:23 pm, 29/04/2022] +Ken Loh: Less than 30k for a local degree I would consider it cheap

[3:23 pm, 29/04/2022] +Rama: Yes that's why the government strong emphasis on lifelong learning along with as much academic education and skills upgrading

[3:23 pm, 29/04/2022] +Rama: We are most fortunate

[3:24 pm, 29/04/2022] +Ken Loh: Plus fortunate to be in Singapore… as compare to my relative in Malaysia ๐Ÿ˜…

When no compare you don’t feel as much

[3:24 pm, 29/04/2022] +Rama: Agree

[3:35 pm, 29/04/2022] +Ken Loh: Our population have to be interested in continuously learning new skill. In order to be competitive. Which I feel not as common.

[3:37 pm, 29/04/2022] +Rama: Totally agree

[3:38 pm, 29/04/2022] +Ken Loh: Can be learned… with the right mindset and YouTube have lots of free resource for understanding of the market if you want to be financially educated there are many.

NLB has free books for everyone to read don’t even need to travel to lend books. Or audio books that are all free.

[3:40 pm, 29/04/2022] +Ken Loh: My friend learn cybersecurity using youtube, twitter and forum lol… in government job quite high as well.

[3:42 pm, 29/04/2022] +Ken Loh: Internet made knowledge much easy to access. I do feel that sometimes internet is a basic need. For the barrier to be remove for equal chance for education.

[3:50 pm, 29/04/2022] +Rama: Yes

[4:46 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Wonder how effective is wolbachia male mosquito to prevent female aedes mosquito from hatching their eggs.

In theory it sounds like able to terminate aedes mosquito breeding.

But in practical life, don't know how good the outcome?

Else we won't have such dengue problem year after year.

[4:47 pm, 29/04/2022] +Rama: I was wondering about that!

[5:09 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

This problem will seems to get worse when next year, nea start to charge plastic bags.

Because many people will stop to bin their trash but throw their liquid refuse and solid refuse down the rubbish chutes.

Then mosquito will breed in every block.

[5:10 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Because no plastic bags how to bin our trash?

[5:13 pm, 29/04/2022] +Timothy Low: Plastic bags can still be bought at a Low price

[5:16 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

So you mean people need to buy when it is now free.

[5:20 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

So wonder why this topic about price increases when everything can also be bought at a price?

Increase price solve everything what.

[5:28 pm, 29/04/2022] +Joseph: Doesn't that mean that there are now more than 8x the competition for the same PMET posts assuming the number of roles remain the same, and all positions are only for locals? ๐Ÿ˜…

Factor in advancements in productivity ie. each person handling more tasks and/or machinery/Computers replacing some tasks/roles that used to be performed by humans, bilateral/multilateral trade agreements and you start to realise that even education/qualifications are not immune to inflation ๐Ÿ˜…

[5:30 pm, 29/04/2022] +Timothy Low: I think more people will try to accumulate as many plastic bags as possible. Then when plastic bag start to charge they will start using the stock they accumulated. Then when run out they can just pay for the plastic bag (which is 5-10cents per piece).

[5:31 pm, 29/04/2022] +Timothy Low: When it becomes a norm people won’t mind paying for a small price

[5:32 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Well just wait to see the outcome.

If go for a win-lose solution then it will get a lose-lose outcome.

If there are more heart and mind to implement a win-win solutions - then it will be a win-win outcome.

The outcome speak for itself.

[5:34 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

This is what you think.

But in my private chat group few people already lambast the policy.

Else why this topic about price increases?

[5:35 pm, 29/04/2022] +Timothy Low: To me increase of 5c for each plastic bag is ok. Compared to increase in 2% of GST.

[5:35 pm, 29/04/2022] +jimmy chew: Imagine this is your salary

[5:36 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Well let us see next year mid 2023.

[5:38 pm, 29/04/2022] +Timothy Low: Your guess is as good as mine

[5:40 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

My estate already see rubbish thrown around the rubbish areas without plastic bags.

Let see will it be worst next year.

[5:43 pm, 29/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

I should have taken pictures just now so that there is proof of what is happening.

"The cookings, the consumables and the cosmetics...The complementary goods and the competing goods (ๅทฆๅณๅ›ฐ้šพ)"

Consequence -

Today Indonesia banned palm oil export to the world! Malaysia and Indonesia are closely related (cooperations & consessions), this big agri-edible oil business!

Simultaneous -

All previous contracts signed till April 27 will be honored as done deals. It is not surprising that big nations and big corporations would have Stacks of these inked contracts for CPOs and / or RPOs to be fulfilled for the entire harvest season or two prior to the April 28 deadline?

C+S -

Next is temptations of profiteering of this precious and useful edible oil by corporations and countries which will trigger down to the 'value added' retail chain of consumers' goods - inflated prices of up to 30% across half the groceries products ?

C+S & Forward -

Will many affected countries SUBSIDISE (่ต„ๅŠฉ) these daily consumptions say at a level of 15% intervention?  Is subsidising healthy and sustainable for the next 24 months time line ?

How deep is your pocket?

Assuming in the near future, time line is compressed and converged with inflations; these crunching momentum will lead to implosion/explosion of economics structures of any nation - starts with the poorer? Poverty and inequalities, the poorer nations will have multiple millions of poor citizens while the richer and aging nations will have poor citizens too!

Expect a minimum increase of $300 or more per household monthly expenditures from foods, goods and services. The more a household/individual expenses, the higher the money needed to pay for the rising prices of things. The baseline starts with $300/mth/household, these unavoidable pains and realities? Money is a function, a transaction, like the olden days barter trades, is this same old world we are living in now (ไบบไธบ้’ฑ่€Œไบก, ้ธŸไธบ้ฃŸ่€Œไบก)?

HBO - home based operations?

Will it kick starts a new way of providing Internet services and online contents from homes?

Any implications to the physical reallocations and metrics of properties? This case office spaces reits and homes?

The Anti-Scam Centre has recovered more than $200 million since its inception under the Singapore Police Force (SPF) in June 2019. Since then, the Anti-Scam Division was formed and expanded to become the Anti-Scam Command.

At the Police Workplan Seminar (April 26), Minister for Home Affairs and Law K. Shanmugam highlighted that scams remain a key concern. This is supported by the 52% rise in cases over the past year and the 154 individuals that have been victims of tech support scams over the past four months.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What are your views on the latest anti-scam efforts that were announced this month? What measures do you take to protect yourself from potential scams?

Some of the anti-scam efforts that were announced include:

๐Ÿ“Œ Guidelines on Online Safety

Co-developed by SPF and the Asia Internet Coalition (AIC), the Guidelines on Online Safety provides a broad overview on the types of crimes and online harms; including scams, and advisories for internet users.

๐Ÿ“Œ Formation of Anti-Scam Command

The Anti-Scam Command brings together all scam-fighting units across SPF, with operations boosted by technology. This is to aid in better sense-making, more effective crime prevention and faster response against scams.

๐Ÿ“Œ Partnership with Institutions

The Anti-Scam Command partners more than 60 institutions including local and foreign banks, non-bank financial institutions, cryptocurrency houses and remittance service providers. Such partnerships will allow for quicker response against scams, with the help of artificial intelligence systems to identify and block suspicious transactions.

If there is cost involved, should we expect  these corporations to see and recognize their contributions as part of their CSR/public duty, and not charge the Police for such ads and notices?

[0:04 pm, 27/04/2022] +Uncle Law: Perhaps this newly formed division can work with pdpc, to establish a standard for sms or wa msg broadcast.

Such as sms from corporate should not carry any url link

What's these victims profile like?

Gender, age, race, education?

Frequency + Quantum of money lost parallel to the above variables?

[0:28 pm, 27/04/2022] +Uncle Law: If majority of the victims are of a certain age grp, perhaps the RCs in the community can reach out to them.

[0:29 pm, 27/04/2022] +Rama: There should be such am outreach if not already in place

[0:29 pm, 27/04/2022] +Smiley face: What the laws to look at?

Age vulnerability like seniors with mental or physical challenges?

What's the ultimate sentencing of these criminals like based on victim's circumstances?

It must be a "LAW & ORDER" approach, nothing lenient please! That's itself is our HALLMARK, Singapore is a law & order country!

The 'Pull & Push' factors of Stagnation and/or Stagflation? What's the strength of SGP Dollars, starts benchmarking?

Singapore will continue to PULL in foreign funds towards $7 trillions (currently at $4.7T), putting aside inflation, that's what many would call it a 'happy problem'? [1:04 pm, 27/04/2022] +~N: My view is that anti-scam efforts has to start from PDPA. Enforcement of PDPA, access and sharing of information, whether within organizations, or perhaps even within homes, between family and non-family members has to be clearly communicated.

[1:35 pm, 27/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

*Some observations for improvement*

1. Recently, I again received a surge of "+" and "+65" calls.

Presumably, I suspect they are overseas scam call - and I reject the calls and block as scam.

a. Wonder when willl the Scamshield for Android is ready - so that we will not received such scam calls - as any such scam calls can be block and filter out at the upstream.

By blocking such scam calls at the upstream will also have prevented gullible receivers from being scam.

2. Understand that Government has been urging banks and other organisations from sending clickable SMS.

However recently, I received clickable SMS from some Government organistions. Iniitially I ignore such SMS - until I received a few reminders to respond.

Then I realise they are legitimate clickable SMS from the Government - and I have to respond.

I thought Government organisations should be consistent in implementing such guidelines - to prevent sending clickable SMS links.

[1:41 pm, 27/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

2. Correction :- Not to send clickable SMS link.

[2:01 pm, 27/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

1. The formation of a centralised Anti-Scam Command and Control centre make sense - as it can coordinate and partner the various stakeholders to spot scam early, use cutting edge techology to make sense of many disparate attempts by scammers and sniff out likely scams.

2. Blocking and filtering scams before it reaches the public - is a better strategy and technique to fight scam.

3. Educating the public to be alert, ability to spot suspected scams and not fall into scams - is also crucial in the fight against scammers.

If unsure, drop, verify, check, block and report - always err on the caution side.

Most important, don't volunteer to give out sensitive personal information, bank details, password, otp etc to any suspicious calls.

Will it intrudes personal privacy should these spywares been deployed to catch these crooks?

Inside Jobs -

Financial institutions will have to reaudit own internal security and access levels. These digitised steps often have least noticeable 'leakages' to outside parties with it scam, cheat or misappropriate of funds - white collar crimes! What people often call it 'inside jobs'!

[3:02 pm, 27/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Coordination and oversight on the cybersecurity adopted by our vital CII Industrial sectors become very crucial.

Government agencies will need to work very closely with the CII coordinated by CSA, Govtech and IMDA - notably power/water sectors, transport sector (increasingly used of 5G, driverless cars, trucks etc), digital banking, e-commerce, elogistics etc) - all these CIIs are target for State-led APT cyber attacks - some with lethal consequences if killerware is deployed.

Local banks also good boys.

[6:28 pm, 27/04/2022] +Rama: But slow to remove sms links!?

[6:28 pm, 27/04/2022] +Dan: Looking at the OCBC Bank scams, the perpetrators are young ppl. The profile of them - high spenders, resourceful and IT savvy. They form their own syndicate, recruiting ppl to share their bank accounts, masked their identities in chat group. With such sophisticated skills, they could have form a formidable team in entrepreneurship, yet they landed in the bad side of the law.

1) Is scamming lucrative as a fastbuck scheme than entrepreneuring a business? The entry level to this business must have been low and accessible to them at that time.

2) I think that this is a team who are very resourceful and creative in their thinking? Just like the movie "Catch Me if You Can", will relevant agencies engage their expertise or experience to bring in other scammers? They are still young and should be offered a second chance.

3) Its not abt educating, I believed most schools have taken teaching of values seriously, we ought to close the gaps of family negligience or poor upbringing. Just like the SK kopitiam saga, how can these teens be educated properly to respect others if parents are doing a poor job?

The multi-ministry taskforce on Covid-19 (MTF) announced the easing of many Covid-19 safety measures on Friday, 22 Apr. However, the MTF urged Singaporeans to stay vigilant and maintain readiness in the face of potential risks, and stressed that the pandemic is not over.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What are your views on the easing of Covid-19 safety measures? Are you looking forward to the easing of measures, and how will the changes affect you?

The changes announced are:

๐Ÿ“Œ Area 1: Community SMMs

1) No more group size limits and no more requirement for safe distancing

2) Masks still required indoors but optional outdoors

However, the Ministry of Health (MOH) encourages individuals to exercise precaution by, for example, wearing a mask in crowded outdoor areas.

3) All workers may return to the workplace; masks can be removed in some situations

MOH encourages employers to retain and promote flexible work arrangements permanently. Workers will also be allowed to remove their masks at the workplace if they are not interacting physically with others and are not in customer-facing areas.

4) Capacity limits removed for large events with more than 1,000 participants

The only exceptions are nightlife businesses where dancing among patrons is one of the intended activities. These will continue to be subject to a 75 per cent capacity limit.

๐Ÿ“Œ Area 2: Other Adjustments to Community Measures

5) Vaccination-differentiated safe management measures (VDS) removed in most settings; workforce vaccination measures lifted

- VDS is to remain for events with more than 500 participants at any one time, such as weddings; nightlife establishments where dancing among patrons is one of the intended activities; and food and beverage (F&B) establishments, including hawker centres.

- While workforce vaccination measures will be lifted nationally, tripartite partners have agreed that employers should have the flexibility to continue implementing vaccination-related instructions for employees, said MOH.

6) No more health risk notices

Individuals infected with Covid-19 will no longer need to submit details of household contacts online, but should continue to exercise social responsibility.

7) Step down in use of TraceTogether and SafeEntry

However, MOH encourages the public to keep the TraceTogether tokens and/or phone applications as a means of conducting VDS checks where necessary, and to enable the Government to rapidly step up contact tracing should it need to do so again.

8) No more free community ART

Paid ART will still be available for members of the public at the combined test centres (CTCs), quick test centres (QTCs), general practitioner clinics or via tele-ART providers.

๐Ÿ“Œ Area 3: Updates on Border Measures

9) Pre-departure test before entry to Singapore no longer needed if fully vaccinated

10) Resumption of cross-border bus and taxi services to Malaysia on 1 May

๐Ÿ“Œ Area 4: Expansion of Community Visits for Migrant Workers

11) Expansion of community visits for migrant workers

From 26 April, up to 25,000 migrant workers will be able to visit the community on weekdays, and up to 50,000 on weekends and public holidays, for up to 8 hours per visit. This is an increase from the current quotas of 15,000 on weekdays, and 30,000 on weekends and public holidays.

๐Ÿ“Œ Area 5: Booster Vaccination

12) Boosters available for those aged 60 to 79

While the Expert Committee on Covid-19 is not recommending that seniors aged between 60 and 79 years receive a second booster shot, it has agreed to offer it to seniors who wish to have it.

๐Ÿ“Œ Area 6: Consolidation of Vaccination Centres

13) More Covid-19 vaccination centres to stop operations

MOH said it will consolidate its resources into several joint testing and vaccination centres, and will give more details later.

Yes, it is prudent to take TT down, temporarily.

We can enjoy a brief respite,  for the moment.

However, pls note tt in other countries.

2 new variants :

The Deltacron (mix Delta w Omicron) and

Covid-XE (latest).

While we may seem to hv bn 'spared' from these,  for now,  the future is still uncertain.

With opening up of borders,  risks will increase. No one can tell what may be carried in by whom.

So, we can keep the TT,  but it may have to be re-activated at short notice if the need arises.

1. The transition of covid measures to gradual opening up of the Economy - is very well managed --- in tandem of the number of infection cases and hospitalisation cases.

2. Can see that people are more relax, look happier, go out in larger group - whether as a family or friends can be seen socialising in eateries or social places.

3. However, my family members and extended family members will still put on mask in the public - whether indoors or outdoors - to safeguard ourselves from catching air-borne viruses - whether Omicron or flu or others.

This will give us a peace of mind - to ensure our whole family will not be infected and have to isolate at home if infected.

4. Will like to highlight our Government foresight in getting the right mRNA vaccines to vaccinate our whole population - as these vaccines are more effective in protecting our population from the covid and its variants - that has helped us emerge from the pandemic.

Kudos to our pandemic specialists and our Government for the foresight - else it will not help us to come to this comfortable position and gradually emerge from the pandemic (with realisitc safeguards and the gradual relaxation as situation improve).

5. The lessons learn from this covid pandemic - must not be forgotten and must be properly documented to form pandemic guidelines - so that in future if other pandemic strike - we can make use of the measures we have learned and put it into good use - without the needs to reinvent the wheel. Of course we need to adapt it future pandemics have peculiar characteristics unlike the covid pandemic.

Let's not forget the front line teams,  those food delivery riders and others who hv also done their part (and maybe more)  as they had to face the virus itself to fight for us (like our front line soldiers in times of war).

Having said tt, thanks also to our society,  the general public and everyone of us here included,  for toeing the line.

Despite our varying points of view, we hv kept ourselves United in the face of a common enemy, got ourselves vaccinated despite our fears,  and been compliant with the rules.

Had we done otherwise,  like wat we see in other countries ard us,  I cannot think of a more positive outcome.

Let's all enjoy this brief respite and give ourselves a pat on our backs for being a truly, cohesive , co-operative,  compliant,  wise-thinking,  and abv all - UNITED - nation!

1) Can shopping malls still continue to use the TT barriers even when TT is not required? Costs may involve to remove and what if situation returns with another pandemic?

2) Are the isolation centres still available for people who contracted covid but do not have means of home quarantine? What abt the charges for such services? Subsidised by Gov or for ppl to pay full rate?

3) After the 2nd booster shots, what's next? Noted that booster shots are only offered to over 65s, does it mean for the rest, gov is no longer offering it free for the citizens?

4) Will ART dispensers be removed from the community eventually.

Noticing that 2), 3) and 4) involves gov expenditure, it will be prudent to start planning to prep the people if gov is thinking of phasing out the necessary?

[4:36 pm, 25/04/2022] +RH: ๐Ÿค”

With uncertainty over whether CoVid wl re surface in the very near future,  only time wl tell.

With the opening of borders and ppl starting to put the guard down,  we won't know wat wl happen next.

As costs r involved in the movement of stuff here & ther,  suggest tt perhaps putting a sticker "Till Further Advice" or sth like tt,  on the ART machines & unplugging them (to save electricity),  as well as sealing the dispensing mouth of the machine,  for say,  2 months,  may be a more prudent way to go.

Like the TT device,  this wud be a temporary measure,  until we know for sure tt we can continue w the new status quo of letting our guard down without fear of catching the virus.

Ironically,  ART kits have started to cost less and are now in full supply.  ๐Ÿคท‍♀️

Sanofi, a French pharmaceutical giant, is investing $638 million to set up a vaccine production plant in Singapore. This will allow Singapore to pivot quickly to make new vaccines that might be needed to combat future pandemics. While the COVID-19 Omicron wave has receded, new variants of concern could still emerge.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What are your views on the steps taken by the Government in ensuring future pandemic preparedness in Singapore and the region? How confident are you that Singapore can manage future pandemic situations even better?

"By enhancing our capacity for manufacturing vaccines in Singapore, the region will be in a stronger position for dealing with future pandemics and the ensuing economic shocks.” said DPM Heng Swee Keat on Wed (Apr 20).

This is "as opposed to the recent experience, where Singapore had to compete globally and probably at great expense for early access to and a continuous supply of Covid-19 vaccines", said Associate Professor Hsu Li Yang, an infectious diseases expert at the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health.

The set-up will allow the company to quickly switch to a new vaccine in the event of a pandemic, as opposed to having to build a new facility.

The production plant is targeted to be at full production by the end of 2025 and is expected to create 200 jobs in Singapore, and it will churn out vaccines to be used in Asia.

I would wish the government to have sufficient resources in terms of logistics and monies, and with reference to past experiences to be more prepare in terms of rolling out policies, support packages and etc

[1:49 pm, 22/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Our pitfall experience in the covid pandemic

1. Future pandemics, Disease X is always a possbility - and covid pandemic pose difficulties to us on a few front :-

a. As covid vaccine production is overseas

- priorities are accorded to the hosting country. We will have to queue behind to access the vaccines.

- We have to compete with many Countries to get the vaccines early - hence we will have to implement more draconian measures such as very expensive lockdown that strangle our Economy, Business and Jobs - as we wait for the vaccines to come.

- We may have to pay a higher price to secure the vaccines.

- Hence our overall cost in tackling pandemic is higher.

2. As many Countries lockdown to prevent the spread of covid pandemic onto their shores - the global supply chain are adversely impacted - and delivery of vaccines are also affected.

a. What is worst that vaccines have validity period - the longer the delay due to disruption - more people will get infected, and the vaccine need to be dispense quickly else the vaccines will expire.

b. Also vaccines need special cooling requirement, and this will increase the cost of cooling - that translate to higher cost of acquiring the vaccines.

3. Thus it is imperative that we need to prevent similar pitfall - to safeguard our public health -in case future pandemic, covid variants, Disease X strike - and prevent another expensive $100 billion draw down to prop up our Economy.

[2:10 pm, 22/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Flexible, Adaptive Advanced Vaccine Manufacturing

1. This French Sanofi pharmaceutical production plant inherit all the hallmark of a "Flexible, Adaptive Advanced Vaccine Manufacturing" - that can ramp up mass production of 4 types of vaccines quickly (with 4 modular production line).

2. The catch is :-

a. R&D of effective, tested and approved vaccines must be achieved first (not sure if vaccine R&D come with this vaccine manufacturing plant or is at offshore?)

b. Raw material that need to manufacture the vaccines must also be available in Singapore - else if worldwide disruption due to lockdown happens again - the vaccine manufacturing plant cannot begin mass production.

3. However if all 2a and b - is not a hurdle - then Sanofi production facilities will put us in forefront in fast mass production of vaccine to tackle a breakout of covidvariants, current flu-based virus and Disease X --- especially if based on mRNA techology that can decode and encode virus gene quickly and develop the relevant vaccines to curb the spread and infection of the respective virus.

The manufacture of mRNA vaccine to tackle the traditional covid, the variant Delta, Omicron - by tweaking the mRNA in double quick time - display flexible, adaptive vaccine Manufacturing is possible.

Hence Sanofi production plant ---- is a valuable gift to Singapore - and will boost Singapore as an Advanced Vaccine Manufacturing Hub - that can supply advanced vaccines to tackle future pandemics and Disease X - to safeguard Singapore public health, but at the same time able to supply and distribute vaccines in quick time to our regional Countries to safeguard region public health.

Bear in mind, unless our regional neighors and the Global Countries population are safe - else no one in the World will be safe - as virus can spread by people Countries to Countries, Continent to Continent.

[2:15 pm, 22/04/2022] +BL: It's a good news story and a big investment into Singapore - not sure what feedback you are looking for?

[2:32 pm, 22/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Boosting Singapore Pharmaceutical Sector, contribute to our GDP

1. Also, other than French Sanofi, there are other Vaccine production investors coming on board such as German BioNTech - also come with mRNA production capabilities that not only produce covid vaccines but also other mRNA vaccines to tackle cancer, flu etc -----

This effectively is making Singapore a "Vaccine Manufacturing Hub", knowledge transfer of vaccines production to our Medical Sectors, safeguarding our Public Health, extending and deepening our Pharmaceutial Sector capabilities in advanced vaccine production notably the versatile mRNA medical technology.

2. The sales of covid vaccines notably mRNA bring multi-billion revenue and profit runs into billions of dollars for the few manufacturing plants - notably Pfizer, BioNTech, Moderna etc.

3. This in turn contribute to higher GDP to the hosting Countries, boost manufacturing, that trigger many supporting industrial sectors business activities and jobs for eg. :-

a. Supply of raw materials

b. Logistics

c. Air freight, Sea freight

d. Finance

e. Transport

f. Jobs - production plant operators, engineers, pharmaceutical specialists, cooperation with Hospital pandemic specialists for knowledge transfer, pilot testing, and access to approved vaccines to protect our population.

4. The contribution of the pharmaceutical sector to our GDP growth is quite phenomenal.

5. It will also help to boost our export sector - as the approved effective vaccines - can be exported to regional Countries - further boosting our Balance of Payments through export.

6. In effect, vaccine production can be seen in the light of a new economic sector like the Green Sustainability Sector - that bring new capabilities, new business, new jobs and new revenue that can contribute "meatily" to our National coffers.

[2:43 pm, 22/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Instability in Europe, Providing an alternative pharmaceutial hub in Asia - Singapore is the best candidate

1. Ukraine war - for the 1st time make EU continent a war risk. Business and investors in EU is increasingly facing existential risk.

2. Large manufacturing plants, large investor in EU - will have to spread their risk elsewhere - an Singapore is a good "safe heaven" - political stable, financial hub, logistic hub, ready talents, good infrastructure, supportive business environment to attract such high end investment into Singapore and creating jobs for Singapore.

[10:33 am, 20/04/2022] +Gcml: Definitely a positive move for our young to have the option of going to live and work overseas. Exposure to foreign culture and international experience is beneficial for growing our next generation.

When this initiative succeeds, hopefully more countries embrace it and it becomes a trend in the long run.

[1:26 pm, 20/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Reconnecting the Southern Continent - and jumpstart our seaport and airport

1. Singapore is a natural transit sea hub and air hub - and New Zealand as well as Australia in a far fetch Southern Continent - will naturally transit in Singapore sea port and airport for many services eg:-

a. Singapore can provide bunkering services and fuel refueling for container ships in transit to New Zealand and Australia and vice versa.

b. Singapore has transit fleet cargo to many regional ports.

c. Singapore has transit air flight to regional and international air ports.

2. Hence reconnecting to New Zealand and Australia - will jumpstart our vibrant sea port and air port - as New Zealand and Australia are more ready to open up their Economies after their abilities to subdue the covid pandemic like Singapore - and more open to trade and traveling.

[1:31 pm, 20/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

3. New Zealand is a big agricultural, dairy products and meat producer (Australia is likewise).

In lieu of global supply disruption that disrupt food supplies - reconnecting to our Southern Continent trade partners like New Zealand and Australia --- is all the more important to secure our food supplies - as we face food supply disruption in some parts of the World eg. Ukraine war, China port disruption due to lockdown from pandemic etc.

[1:39 pm, 20/04/2022] +65 9876 5095: Lol cheap labour when work and travel… and chance of integration much higher.. if they married people there and have kids

[1:56 pm, 20/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

2 more important areas for discussion :-

Build new areas of cooperation to expand trade and capabilities- Digital Economy, Cyber Security cooperation, Green Economy

Ukraine war - impact on US-China relationship - both our 2 Big Economic partners

A. Currency decoupulation

B. Technology decoupulation

C. Trade decoupulation

D. Supply chain decoupluation

E. Self sufficiency resiliency - less trade

F. Segmentation into Economic, Security Blocs

[2:03 pm, 20/04/2022] +Joseph: Do you mean decoupling? Because I don't think there is such a term as "decoupulation" .. and googling that word, turned up results for "decopulation" ... which I just found out refers to something completely unrelated and totally disgusting ๐Ÿ˜ณ

[2:04 pm, 20/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Oh... I mean decoupling...

[2:06 pm, 20/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Decoupling - will be very detrimental to globalisation and national security (more chances of conflict - back to WW1 and WW2 scenarios).

[2:42 pm, 20/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Ukraine war - impact on US-China relationship - both our 2 Big Economic partners

A. Currency decoupling

B. Technology decoupling

C. Trade decoupling

D. Supply chain decoupling

E. Self sufficiency resiliency - less trade

F. Segmentation into Economic, Security Blocs

1. The purpose of Globalisation and World trade - is to embrace all Countries to trade, do business, investment, travel, studies etc --- to ensure everyone has a mutual stake in the World Economy --- hence there is less incentive to confront over political matters that lead to conflict, fight and war.

2. Hence we have many decades of peace from Regional big wars - except some wars confined to some regions - as many Countries have mutual stakes in the Economy - and less likely to make rash move.

3. Decoupling of all the above - is a recipe for trouble ahead - as it unravel mutual stakes that require cooperation and collaboration - but instead promote competition among Economic and Security Blocs to wrestle material, goods, services, food, currency, supply chain, political interest, economic interest --- that can easily degenerate into confrontation, conflict and war --- the same scenarios as in WW1 and WW2.

4. WTO, UN, WHO, IMF, World Bank etc - are erected and institutionalise to promote business cooperation, currency cooperation, arbitration of conflict to ensure world peace - after World War 2

But decoupling will dismantle the noble intention of promoting World peace and World prosperity - and make all the World institution redundant - as major Countries form Blocs - to push out Countries outside their close circles --- and a recipie for confrontation.

A. Currency decoupling

1. China are increasingly make bilateral arrangement with many Countries to pay in yuan over bilateral trade eg. Saudi Arabia with oil, Russia trade etc.

2. Russia being sanction over its invasion into Ukraine are kick out of SWIFT currency system - and dictate "unfriendly nations" to pay oil with roubles.

3. Overtimes, this has the effect  of eroding the use of US currency as more and more Countries will use bilateral swap currency arrangement for trade.

4. This will impact Singapore as a financial hub - as we have big US currency transaction though we are also a yuan offshore exchange. We also hold US dollars as our reserves. But bilateral currency swap between Countries will impact our financial hub - as it bypass our financial exchange.

B. Technology and Trade decoupling

1. US has sanctions many exports of high tech products to China such as semicondutor chips, engines, software etc as well as stop imports of China tech products.

2. US also similarly sanctions Russia and stop exports of goods and services to Russia due to Russia invasion of Ukraine.

3. As a result, China is trying to build its tech capabilities such as semiconductors, engines as well as advances in many other high tech areas like hypersonic missiles, AI, quantum computing, space exploration, satellites etc.

4. Technology sanctions will bring about technology decoupling - and increase self reliance among the big powers and reduce trade.

5. Singapore being reliance on Global trade - 3 times our size of our GDP will definitely be impacted - as we can't export sensitive high-tech products to China and Russia - impacting our trade.

C. Supply chain decoupling

1. With sanctions against China and Russia - many products cannot be manufactured in China and Singapore cannot supply materials, semi-finished goods or finished goods to China and Russia or import the same from both Countries.

2. Hence Singapore will have to look for new suppy chain and new trade source - that will disrupt our supply chain - and impacting our trade with the 2 Countries.

E. Self sufficiency resiliency - less trade

1. China and Russia may turn inwards and become self-sufficient - though economically it is more costly and less efficient and products will not be of the most cutting edge due to the biting sanctions impose by US and the West - but nevertheess it will impact Singapore trade with the 2 big Countries.

F. Segmentation into Economic, Security Blocs

1. As a result, chances that China and Russia will form their own Economic and Security Blocs while US and the West will form their own Economic and Security Blocs.

2. Both Blocs will recruit smaller Countries into their armbit - and Segmentation of Global Economy will happen.

Security interest that develop between the Blocs will also happen.

3. This become the recipe for WW3 and Cold War (the same scenarios of WW1 and WW2) - where Economy and Security interest are segmented - as Blocs compete and confront one another for resources and benefits.

The challenge is how Singapore can make the World - wake up to this imminent danger - that are set on by Trump and his Administration - and further extended by Biden Administration - with the support of US bipartisan lawmakers.

[2:45 pm, 20/04/2022] +Patrick Loke: This was since 26 Mar. sigh

[2:58 pm, 20/04/2022] +BL: Good point - we should avoid using age-gender-race-religion bias related language when possible. This is about people, simple as that.

[3:15 pm, 20/04/2022] +Joseph: This is not just about anybody/everybody.

It is targeted at attracting YOUNG, PRODUCTIVE people...the kind that we are not producing enough of. The demographics of a segment of our population that we need to increase because our population is aging quickly.

This is NOT just about people, but a particular segment of people. I doubt many in this forum will be smiling if we end up with Wealthy NZer retirees coming to SG and buying up all the choice properties at prices that make our eyes water ๐Ÿ˜œ

[3:19 pm, 20/04/2022] +Rama: Exactly

[4:05 pm, 20/04/2022] +BL: It's really about managing immigration for both countries. By setting an age limit there is an automatic restriction on numbers. Make sense really.

[4:06 pm, 20/04/2022] +BL: SG people can go buy property in NZ anyway, nothing has changed there.

[4:06 pm, 20/04/2022] +BL: SG is one of the very few countries in the world whose population can buy property in NZ.

[4:13 pm, 20/04/2022] +Joseph: Reminds me a bit of the last similar arrangement we signed with another friendly Nation .. think it was called CECA or something like that  ...  similar in the sense that the benefits seem very "unidirectional" and not so obvious to me as an average Singaporean

[4:53 pm, 20/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

1. My stand against the topic is "Might does not equate to right".

"Mutual respect and respect for International Law is right".

2. Hence I support Singapore Government stand in the UN - against Russia invasion of Ukraine - to make our voice heard - so that like-minded politicians will not emulate the mindset of "might is right".

By promoting more such voices in the UN - will consolidate and pull more Countries to buy our views to deter mighter and stronger Countries from exerting their whim and fancy against smaller or weaker Countries - quoting historical justifications to invade other Countries and violating sovereignty and territorial lands.

3. Though economically, we may have suffer some collateral damages in our business with Russia, disruption of supply chain, imported inflation as food, good and services may be impacted by the sanctions against Russia as well as declaration of "unfriendly nation" by Russia - that may politically, diplomatically and economically put us in an uncomfortable position when dealing with Russia.

But I think this are some sacrifice we must be willing to take - to put forth a principle front - that UN charter - the right of existence as a Country must not be violated - else the World will become the law of a jungle - where the mightier survive at the expense of the smaller and weaker Countries.

The sum of the rest of the World against an aggressive aggressor - will win in terms of might, determination and the right values in the long run - so that the World will be a safer and prosperous place.

Lessons learn from Ukraine war

1. We must remain strong and united on the following grounds :-

a. We must be economically strong and must focus on STEM, R&D - so that we are technologically advance and capable.

b. We must build a strong and credible armed forces based on National Service - so that numerically and qualitatively we are well trained, and our soldiers must be united and willing to fight and defend our Countries like the brave Ukranians.

c. Our population irregardless or race, languages or religions or political affilations must be united as One Singapore to defend our Countries and determine to fight any aggressor like the brave Ukranians.

2. The MRT network of tunnels and MRT underground stations - will serve as a good air-shelter, and allow our troops to survive from bombardment and then re-strike - just like Ukraine experience with network of underground metros.

3. Diplomatically,

a. We must strive to maintain good relationship with our neighors like Malaysia, Indonesia - to safeguard our border security.

The close economic relationship, mutual economic and business benefits, people-to-people relationship, close political ties - spell good for Singapore that will help to safeguard our National Security.

b. At the same time, we must strive to maintain good relationship with major powers, global political influencers, regional Countries and UN - so that in the event where a crisis arises - we will have many supports and assistance from the global world.

c. Our strategically place armed forces training bases with many overseas Countries will put us in good stead - as it provide us realistic training, safeguard some of our vital military assets and allow us to do a second strike to retake or regain our military initiatives as well as gaining military assistance from overseas Countries.

4. In retrospect, the Power geopolitical dynamics do play a part in Russia invasion against Ukraine.

a. US hasty and chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan and US domestic aversion to military intervention in 2 successive Administration - embolden Russia invasion into Ukraine - banking on US unwillingness to intervene.

b. EU unwillingness to accept Ukraine membership and fearfulness of facing up to Russia.

Should US adopt similar stance as in the "Cuban crisis" - by treating Ukraine as Cuba - the doorstep into EU - then Russia will be more hesitant to strike.

Psychological posture - is the key to prevent Russia invasion into Ukraine.

US and EU "scary bird" posture - embolden Russia to take on adventurism - the window opportunity that Russia have been waiting for to strike.

Thus to prevent future such conflict, balance of powers is important - to make the other side wary and do all the calculation - economically, politically, military capabbilities and achievement - as well as the willingness to intervene when the crutch comes.

5. As for whether will Russia invasion into Ukraine - turn into a larger Russia-Europe/US war or a larger WW3 or into a nuclear war?

My take is :-

a. As NATO intervene more actively in the war front - cannot dismiss the possibility of turning Russia conflict with Ukraine - into a larger Russia-NATO war.

b. As for whether will a nuclear war erupted - as long as NATO does not threaten the existence of Russia - but help to chase Russia forces out of Ukraine - then a nuclear war may not happen ---- as Russia is equally fearful of NATO directing the nuclear weapons at it in retaliation if Russia strike with nuclear.

[6:41 pm, 20/04/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Digital Economy and Cyber Security cooperation

1. To expand our traditional trade arrangement - we should build new areas of trade cooperation and capabilities - notably Digital Economy.

2. Trade can be done remotely via eCommerce, eTransaction and ePayment with the click of a few button at the desktop.

In addition, filling up trade documents, shipping document, letter of credits etc to complete the trade transaction can be done easily and speedily via electronically means.

By removing barriers to Digital transaction, trade cost can even be lowered - and will boost earnings to businesses on both sides while reducing product prices to consumers which will help to fuel more consumptions and hence higher trade volume.

3. Thus Digitalising trade will help to promote more trade, shipping, air freight and hence contribute to higher Economic growth.

4. But digitalisation comes the challenge of securing digital transaction. New Zealand and Singapore being advanced economies - have expertise in cyber security and collaboration in securing digital trade both ways - will help to ensure trade transaction integrity and boost confidence in using digital means to do eCommerce and eTrade.

5. Collaboration in developing Green Economy - and ensure both sides doing business taking into consideration and giving the impetus to develop Green Business and Trade - will help to safeguard against Global Climate and at the same time fuel the development of another Economic Sector - Green Economic Sector - that will contribute to both sides Economic Growth.

Let's construct our pricing model based on V & C, simply the on going global politics and wars are certain and clear - existential!

What's the outlook Q2 to Q4, 2023?

What's the global Supply & Demand for these 3 variables and Spot Prices? Don't overreact over Futures tend?

Will it be an inverse or parallel relationship in terms of S vs D vs P of these one, two or three resources? Dont rely on old playbook?
