If Russia continue to harass Ukraine militarily, Russia will just win a tree but lose the whole jungle (the whole World) and walk herself into International isolation and make the region around her more volatile, more hostile and lose ground internationally.
Russia will gain more if Russia resort to seek resolution diplomatically rather than militarily.
The Syria experience demonstrate this.

People will tend to work with another person who dangle a carrot or who offer mutual benefits - and not with anyone who point a gun at them.

It will be a pity whereby decades of international diplomacy of winning friends, working out on mutual benefits, trade and business - are undo by one event of military coercion of a weaker neighbor - whereby embarking on diplomacy will gain more ground than by military force.
Do note that unintended tension will open up the old wounds of the Cold war and unwittingly create a hostile region that have enjoy many decades of peace.
This region that are join by land to another hotspot, Middle East to the West and a 3rd hotspot to the East - the Asia Pacific - are more likely to trigger a human catastrophe of unprecedented proportion - with reminders that World War 1 and World War 2 are started and ignited in this region.
The combination of 3 hotspots of Middle East, East Europe and Asia Pac - if all ignite together will spell danger to human mankind.
