Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will be sworn in as the next prime minister today.

In an interview on May 10, DPM Wong outlined his approach to governance and his aspirations for Singapore, wanting Singapore to be a place that embraces different pathways to success, with people from all walks of life assured of the basics – such as housing, education, healthcare and retirement needs – as long as they work consistently.

He added that in considering the best way to take Singapore forward, the country is prepared to relook fundamental assumptions as society’s circumstances, needs and expectations change.

*💬 What are your views on DPM Lawrence Wong’s approach to governance and aspirations for Singapore?*

_*📌 Beyond ‘Swiss standard of living’*_

DPM Wong, who is also finance minister, said that in terms of economic growth, Singapore is currently at a high level of development and ranks quite highly in areas such as housing, healthcare, education and transport.

He noted that while former prime minister Goh Chok Tong had in 1984 held up the “Swiss standard of living” as a target for Singaporeans to aspire towards, it is very hard to identify any single benchmark like this today.

“In this new phase, we are in uncharted territory. We have to find our way forward,” DPM Wong said.

“We have to still learn from the best, find best practices, but we have to break new ground. We have to find fresh solutions for our problems and challenges.”

_*📌 Building shared consensus*_

DPM Wong laid out two roles he sees for the Government when it comes to building a shared consensus in the face of differing opinions.

At times, the Government may have to embark on policies it believes are necessary and important after having sounded out different segments of society, even if it knows they are unpopular.

Other instances may involve groups with contradictory views, he said. These could include debates on sensitive issues such as the wearing of tudung in workplaces and the decision to repeal Section 377A of the Penal Code. In such cases, the Government may prefer not to take the lead but allow social norms to evolve organically. DPM Wong said the Government’s role here is to be “more of a facilitator, a listener, an honest broker”

“We find ways to get the different groups to come together, engage one another, listen to each other’s views, and find accommodation and compromise. And then think about what is the best way for Singapore to move forward without fracturing our society,” he said.

In response to a question about the evolving Singaporean identity, DPM Wong stressed the importance of finding common ground, even as every community should feel valued and be able to continue with its customs.

“Even as we maintain these links, we must be mindful that we are first and foremost Singaporeans,” he said. “And while we have these links, we must continually work towards strengthening our Singaporean identity and expanding the common ground that we all share as Singaporeans.”

_*📌 Guided by national interest*_

On the topic of foreign policy, DPM Wong noted that Singapore’s leadership transition takes place at a time of great shifts in the wider world.

He reiterated that Singapore’s approach is to stick to its national interests and act in a consistent and principled way. From time to time, Singapore will say or do things that some countries may not be so happy with, he added.

“It could be China one day, it could be the US another day. We are not here to find a balance between the two,” DPM Wong said.

“If one day I take a position against one country, the next day I have to find another thing to say for the other country so that I can somehow achieve some perceived balance – that is not our approach.”

The silver lining is that Asia will continue to be the centre of gravity of the global economy with many companies wanting to have a presence here, and not just in China or any one country.

_*📌 The road ahead*_

Asked about his interactions with young Singaporeans during the Forward Singapore exercise, which was launched to refresh the social compact together with the fourth-generation leadership team, DPM Wong said he had the sense that they would like to contribute to something larger than themselves.

DPM Wong thinks that young Singaporeans want to have a good life that is measured not only by narrow metrics based on material success, but also by meaning and purpose. “I think these are very noble aspirations,” he said, adding that the Government will help young Singaporeans realise them.

When asked how he would characterise his leadership style, he said “I will be open, consultative, I will listen.“ “But in the end, I will not shirk from doing the right thing and the important decisions that are necessary to take Singapore forward,” he added.

15/5/24, 10:14 am - +Frankie Wee: DPM Wong did well his experience speech public what he has to be DPM mean for Singapore future Make a better tomorrow.

15/5/24, 10:17 am - +Darius Lee: It is not a bad thing for the Government to be open, willing to listen and consultative.

However, there are risks to this approach as well, which the Government must be aware of:

- Populism. There is always a danger that any government leans in a populist direction.

- Vocal interest groups. In any society, there are always groups that are more vocal and groups that are more silent. The Government should not only listen to those vocal ones, but must actively reach out to groups which are more silent, on any given issue.

"The Truths Are Everywhere."

"Wir mussen wissen. Wir werden wissen."

-- David Hilbert, Mathematician, 23/1/1862 - 14/2/1943

Tapestries of truth?

A tapestry of thoughts that resonate deeply

in today's complex and chaotic world, the pursuit of truth can seem daunting, yet it's more crucial than ever. With the vastness of knowledge and mysteries spanning from the smallest earthworms to the farthest reaches of the galaxy, humanity must embrace the challenge of seeking truth. However, this journey is fraught with obstacles, including delusions, variations, and doubts that can lead to frustration and dismissal. Its almost seems transparent and virtually visible and invisible on the front of the future of humankind. How can humankind search for each meaning and the underlying truth of everything from earthworms to axiom particles out of the stratosphere and lost in the Galactica of the greatest mystery after Galileo and Newton, unsolved and the truth is laying out there in zillions of pixels and each pixel contained part of the vast masters of knowledge unknown to be discovered by human pace?

15/5/24, 1:07 pm - +Nic Freehold: hope they can have own team Temasek Holdings & GIC to audit if there are any mismanagement

*More Press Conference as part of Government Effort to improve Communication*

1. I particularly like and support the coming PM Lawrence Wong effort to improve communication through press conference.

2. The reasons being :-

a. Public will be able to understand the underlying reasons why and how policies are formulated in this manner.

The benefits, the limitations, the constraints and the intended target audience in which the policies intend to reach out to.

By doing so, public will have a better understanding of the rationale of why policies are formulated in such a manner - and are morely likely to secure buy-in from the public.

b. Also if the policies involved participation, consultation - before reaching a conclusion - buy-in of the policies from the public will be on a solid ground.

c. It is important to reach out to the silent ones - which form the majority of the people.

Silent ones must be encouraged to speak out and provide their feedback on policies that bothers them.

If the Government reach out to the public such as REACH forum through WhatsApp that are doesn't involve face to face or other approach - so that more people are encouraged to speak out - the quiet ones should make use of the opportunities to do so.

_ (Notice that the more vocal ones maintain a "comms silence" for almost 2 hours so that the quiet ones can speak their mind without feeling discomfort and without the feeling of being "crowded out". Else if quiet ones continue to stay silent despite the out-reach efforts to solicit feedback - the forum will forever be comms-silence.................zzzzzzZZZZ )_

d. With more press conference to explain new policies, policies amendment and important strategic Government direction - than misinformation, disinformation will less likely to proliferate in the backdrop of active social media, fake news, deepfakes, live streaming of sensational political views aim to mislead Singaporeans.

Eg. the recent social media sensation on ERP 2.0 - design to discredit the LTA. (Terry Xu)

"OPINION   LTA’s $556 million misstep: Approving an ERP 2.0 device that cannot meet minimum standards of heat tolerance.

In a recent parliamentary session, concerns surfaced about the new ERP 2.0 OBU’s design.

Despite its bulkiness, Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat did not confirm if it meets the AEC-Q100 heat tolerance standards.

The oversight is significant, considering the S$556 million tender for the ERP 2.0 system and the flawless performance of the previous generation’s device for over two decades."

15/5/24, 2:21 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

1. Coming PM Lawrence Wong - covid Press Conference and WhatsApp REACH group + others online and offline approach - provide instantaneous communication on Government effort to tackle a life-threatening crisis - and engage immediate public feedback --- eliciting a "Joint Effort" to tackle an existential crisis that affect everyone.

This unite everyone and shape a "single minded effort" - to tackle a crisis that affect everyone - a very good PR and yet collective effort --- "All-in-One" approach to resolve an adverse situation. A resounding success.

2. And the "Forward Singapore" initiative outreach - will also achieve a similar outcome for all major Government policies affecting everyone.

3. Hence I have full confident with the coming PM Lawrence Wong & his 4G leaders approach in governance - a Consultative and yet a "Joint Effort - Government and Public" approach in policy formulation.

A democratic institution of governance - at its best.

Important not to see what is on the surface or optics.

See what is done and delivered.

Eg. I also doze off in a meeting with some bosses especially a long meeting.

Because I got to stay after 7 pm when everyone knock off before I can start to update the system and ended only about  5am.

Next day, the meeting is 9am.

I was late and doze off during the long meeting.

My immediate boss told the meeting, oh he work overnight up to 5am to do maintenance.

And he have to attend the early morning meeting.

The big bosses never scold me.

So don't look at the surface, and the optics and jump into conclusion.

Look at the underlying cause and the outcome.

不看面。

看那低。

Don't look at surface.

Look at the underlying cause and outcomes.

*Guided by National Interest*

1. Particularly, I am comfortable with the coming PM Lawrence Wong approach to geopolitical tussle from the SuperPowers.

2. As a small Country, a little red dot in the World Map - it is not easy to stand our ground - when 2 Big Elephants clash - and in the midst, try to pull smaller Countries into their alliance bloc.

3. Singapore will not be spared.

4. Hence by putting forth our guiding principles right and communicate openly, then even contesting SuperPowers and bigger Countries will respect our positions and our grounds - and will have trust on our integrity and our principled positions.

5. Specifically, I support our principles :-

a. Be guided by our National Interest --- the basis of our surival and our prosperity.

b. Our voice of reasons - must be morally right and sound.

i. Eg. we don't take sides based on race, based on culture, religions, based on money baits etc.

ii. We communicate our ground based on what is morally right guided by international rule of law.

(If the rule of law is not adequate, we must communicate why we support the spirit of the law but deviate and proposed counter positions or amenment -- so that people will respect us for being a "voice of reasons")

(Where our "voice of reasons" are anchor in the "Universal Law of Karma").

c. Having say so, we must continue to be friends with every Countries in the World based on the principles of :-

"Friends with All.

Enemies with None.

Forge mutual benefits with Win-Win outcome.

朋友满天下。

敌人无一个。

以附会福利的精神,达成双赢的共识。

So that we can win friends all over the World, and benefits from whatever shoring "reshoring", "friendshoring", "nearshoring" --- because we establish trust with every Countries to work for mutual benefits and Win-Win outcomes.

We can agree to disagree - and not let single or some differing issues - to forge mutual benefits.

*Our Economic Futures - at the backdrop of multi-polar economic reshuffling*

1. I am particularly impress by the coming PM Lawrence Wong insights - that despite the sessimic global reshuffling of economic multi-polar movement of "reshoring, friendshoring, near-shoring" - that will structurally disupt our traditional global supply chain ---- we are in the midst of "centre of gravity" of economic growth ---- specifically Asia Pacific and ASEAN centrality of growth.

Many US and West Big Tech and big companies are looking into ASEAN for their next big move --- and Singapore is a big part of it.

Tech Giants Start to Treat Southeast Asia Like Next Big Thing .

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-05-11/tech-giants-start-to-treat-southeast-asia-like-next-big-thing

2. The coming PM is confident that we will be able to find niches that put our Economy into a good stead, to make our business vibrant and create good jobs for our people.

3. Though AI will be a fearsome variable as job disruptor, our people must be trained to capitalise on it and make us even more productive and earn much higher income than succumb by it.

I am confident we can exploit AI to our advantage just like how we exploit computers and IT - in the earlier years.

https://theinvestor.vn/singapore-introduces-ai-in-classrooms-d9966.html

Singapore introduces AI in classrooms.

4. We are in the era of GAI (Generative AI) - that is an AI that are learned from humans and unable to understand nuance, context, human 5 mental aggregates  of 5-sense consciousness, feelings, perceptions, judgement, mental formation - hence no way GAI can beat human minds.

GAI is still very much a productivitiy tools to humans just like what computer and IT is to humans.

AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) - that tout learning of human cognitive process is still a fallacy.

Hence we should exploit AI effectively, and ride the economic and job challenges ahead of us --- and we need not fear AI that will replace our jobs.

5. Remote jobs and offshoring of jobs -- WFH ---- as I was talking to a SME boss - is quite a challenge when I try to get his view about flexible work arrangement, 4-day work week.

This is what he told me, his specific words as I quote:-

a. Now youngsters are "less hungry" compare to foreign workers. Foreign workers can see their "fire in their eyes", eager to work more with less.

Our youngsters job workers are always asking, can work at home or not, got 4 day work week or not and Singapore workers so expensive compare to foreign workers.

He told me now I got a few Singaporeans with me, and also I got few "offshore foreign workers" with me - and all work equally well.

He say if our Singaporeans resign, he will engage "offshore foreign workers" - as they are cheaper and more hungry.

I ask him, I thought MOM got pro-rata employment quota dictate that there must be more Singaporean workers in the office (I say I don't know the exact quote, I guess 2/3 Singaporeans workers and 1/3 foreign workers, I thought?)

He say "onboard Singaporeans workers ratio" no change - but "remote offshore - more foreign workers".

I say "oh..... and comm silence for a long while reflecting what he told me................................................"

b. Hence we must be careful of the development going on in especially the SMEs space, and also look out in the job front in MNCs and bigger organisations space. Don't let people eat our lunches....

15/5/24, 4:37 pm - +Rama: My take on the 4G incoming government is clear when SM LHL is no longer in politics to gauge incoming PM LW true standing.

15/5/24, 4:40 pm - +Rama: 👌👍🤝🙏

15/5/24, 5:21 pm - +Andy: I'm confident with PM Lawrence Wong and his team, Singapore is in good hands and life will be better as a whole. Not that now is no good, in fact Singapore has been progressing since independence with ex PM LKY, GCT and LHL with their colleagues. The majority of us got education, have jobs some business owners, own HDB some private property some own both, living in a safe environment.

When the Asian financial crisis and COVID hits us the government makes swift decisions to bring Singapore out of it. I cannot imagine if Singapore doesn't have a government with a majority, what will happen when a crisis hits again. So please give PM Lawrence Wong and his team a strong mandate when the election comes.

Having said all the above, I'm not saying I support every policy the government or statutory board makes. For one I'm not supporting the ebikes, shared path, usage of PMD. So I hope with the Forward Singapore and more listening to the grounds like this WhatsApp group and other different groups, we can make a better life for all of us.

15/5/24, 6:15 pm - +Rama: Clean Slate!?

15/5/24, 6:35 pm - ☸️  Danny 心:

1. Yesterday there was a conversation between a man and a woman in a crowded bus.

And it is very relevant to today's topic.

2. It started off as an innocent conversation with an innocent topic - but then it steamroll into something very big of global implication.

3. The content must have caught attention of the crowded bus and many people talking among themselves as it is a evening peak hour whereby many office workers are going home - because the voices in the bus suddenly stopped and everyone seems to listen intently to the conversation - even though the conversation is not loud, measured like normal conversation but audible.

The content must be very interesting and close to everyone's heart - as seems like everyone is listening to the conversation intently - even though it is converse in a mix of Chinese and English (mainly Chinese).

4. This is how the conversation goes :-

Woman :- Nowadays everything price increases, and online order of goods - delay for 1 or 2 months.

Must be the Ukraine war that cause the delay and the high price - all stuck in the Red Sea.

Man :- No not correct, Ukraine war don't trap the ships in the Red Sea, it is the Middle East War. Ukraine war trap goods in the Mediterranean Sea.

Now ships got to go via the Cape of Good Hope of Africa, insurance go up, delivery delay for 1 to 2 months, good prices go up.

Woman :-When will the 2 war stops? It seems like it is going to fight on for many years. Will it trigger something big (World War 3)?

Man :- Not easy for the 2 wars to stop because of Human 人心五毒 - 贪嗔痴慢疑。 (Human 5 inherent poison - greed (power), hatred, Ignorance (that violence will come to no good end), Arrogant (Power bullies), No trust among people.

Unless, people recognise and 放下 (drop) these 5 poisons in human heart and mind - then very difficult to stop the fight and geopolitical tension - and collaborate and cooperate for the greater good.

Woman :- But the Middle East had a very complex and long complicated history and sufferings.

Man :- It is just 一口怨气 (1 unhappy gas - in the heart) - 放下 (put down, let go) - then all poisons stop.

Human has body and have discomfort, anger is bound to come. But human must be able to recognise it immediately, and put it down within 10 minutes - and don't let anger consume us.

For hatred, drop it by the next day - and don't let hatred bring forward into another day.

Another day is a fresh day, a new life, with positive energy 正能量 - and must not let negative energy 负能量 - carry to another day - and ruin our lives.

Man :- 万般带不走,唯有业随身。Everything, wealth, power, house, land, loved ones cannot bring with us when we die, only karma, retribution will follow us like shadow.

Do good, good outcome. Do bad, bad outcome.

Woman :- Not so easy to let go of hatred and anger.

Man :- LKY though very strict, has a Big Heart, Big Mind 肚量大,心量大。Our ancestors also slaughter by Japs - and yet we can forgive them - and be friends to work for mutual benefits. What happen is the ancestors and not the current generations. Why let hatred pass down from generations to generations?

If we can do it, why Middle East cannot do it?

Man :- Why do we clenched our fist every day - hate others?

When we hate others, we torture ourselves, we suffer, others suffer --- just look at destruction and death happenings?

Is it worth it?

Why can't work for mutual benefits?

If human life is only 100 years - why don't make every year a fulfilling life - help ourselves, help others --- and make the World a better World.

Hence we need to 顿悟 the world to project our voice of reasons to the World not   渐悟 (slowly let people realise - could be too slow as world affairs are collapsing quite rapidly。

Man :- When we relax our clenched fist, we forgive others, and we save ourselves from sufferings and fire of hatred.

And we can extend our hands to make friends with the World - every Countries - for mutual benefits, prosperity and peace

This is what our successive of leaders able to do - make many friends, make Singapore a Pureland in the little red dot.

If every Countries do this, there will be World Peace and no World War 3.

As people start to descend the bus, they turn around and look at the couples in conversation - and I think it must have a profound impact on their mind reflecting the conversations of the couples --- simple concept - but profound impact.
