REACH 503 - What are your thoughts on Minister Shanmugam’s statement about the Israel-Hamas conflict? How can we encourage Singaporeans to not let external events affect the peace within Singapore, and continue to maintain mutual respect and trust between racial and religious groups in Singapore?

13/10/23, 10:15 am - +REACH: *๐Ÿ“ข Topic ๐Ÿ“ข*

Yesterday, Minister Shanmugam spoke to the media about how the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict will significantly impact the world, including Singapore and South-east Asia.

Minister said: “This is going to be quite a tough period. But our fundamental attitude cannot change. We are all Singaporeans. We have a precious peace within Singapore; we must never let external events affect that.”

๐Ÿ’ฌ *What are your thoughts on Minister Shanmugam’s statement about the Israel-Hamas conflict? How can we encourage Singaporeans to not let external events affect the peace within Singapore, and continue to maintain mutual respect and trust between racial and religious groups in Singapore?*

๐Ÿ“Œ *_Singapore’s peace must not be affected_*

Minister Shanmugam said that what is happening in the Middle East is going to evoke strong emotions, but that Singaporeans must maintain their peace.

“There are deep divides in how people are reacting. And as the conflict unfolds, these divides are inevitably going to become deeper,” he said, adding that these divides are significant and often along racial and religious lines.

๐Ÿ“Œ *_Important to maintain mutual respect and trust between religious and racial groups in Singapore_*

Minister said, “We have open and frank conversations. There is a lot of mutual respect and trust between religious and racial groups, and Singaporeans strongly value our racial and religious diversity and harmony.”

He also mentioned the study released by the Pew Research Centre in September that found high levels of inter-religious tolerance and acceptance in Singapore.

The study found that in Singapore, about 90 per cent of respondents here saying that various religions were compatible with Singapore’s culture and values. “It is not something you see in many other countries. And most Singaporeans say that Singapore’s religious, ethnic, cultural diversity is a good thing for the country and makes Singapore better. This is really quite remarkable", he said.

“Our religious leaders, our people are very different, compared with many other countries… What we have built over the years and what we now have is precious and extremely remarkable. And we must do our best to protect it.”

๐Ÿ“Œ *_Singapore's views of the conflict_*

Minister Shanmugam said that Singapore’s position has been made very clear over the years, and that Singapore acts against anyone who promotes or espouses extremism and violence. “We condemn all acts of terrorism and wanton violence. But we must not let these events happening externally affect the internal situation in Singapore,” said Minister Shanmugam.

He added that it is possible to hold strong views on the conflict, yet condemn acts of terrorism. “It is possible to deplore how the Palestinians have been treated over the years. It is possible to deeply sympathise with the plight of the Palestinians, and yet still unequivocally condemn the terrorist attacks carried out in Israel.

13/10/23, 10:34 am - +Umar M: Our Minister of Foreign Affairs just went over there and Singapore has a Representative Office there with an official Non-Resident Representative (former Senior Parl Sec Hawazi Daipi).

Are you saying we have official representation with ISIS?

13/10/23, 10:37 am - +Umar M: I find your statement "Palestinian ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ is part of isis" extremely disappointing and incredibly misguided. I hope you retract it and ponder upon the actual facts from verified sources including our government's statements in the past.

13/10/23, 10:37 am - ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Palestine is not ISIS.

PLO has a UN representative.

PLO officials are also trained in Singapore on governance.

13/10/23, 10:37 am - +Umar M: Exactly.

13/10/23, 10:38 am - +Umar M: Thank you Danny for some enlightened facts.

13/10/23, 10:38 am - ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

No problem.

Just stating the facts.

13/10/23, 10:39 am - +Noraini: If Shanmugam think we should not let external influence us then he should lead by example and shut his mouth especially if not all Singaporeans share his view

13/10/23, 10:40 am - +Darius Lee: In 2021, I wrote a letter to the press on this similar point, which is worth sharing here:

https://www.straitstimes.com/opinion/forum/forum-avoid-simplistic-polarising-narratives-of-gaza-conflict

13/10/23, 10:41 am - +Umar M: A very well written forum letter and now I am intrigued to read your MA thesis indeed.

13/10/23, 10:44 am - +Rama: Already being monitored

13/10/23, 10:45 am - +Rama: Maybe in Malaysia or Indonesia but not here. We are a secular country.

13/10/23, 10:46 am - +Noraini: What is proper channel to send aid.  Prof Faizal touched on this once during  earthquake at Syria I think.  Then netizen uproar for his call

13/10/23, 10:48 am - +Noraini: Secular means we voice support for Israel who is known to imprison kids,  killed American  journalist with bulldozer ?

13/10/23, 10:53 am - +Frankie Wee: We can’t justify both side between Muslim and Jewish history religion.

But war is very seriously each country Gaza and Israel.

13/10/23, 10:59 am - +Frankie Wee: Learn to accept respect differently religion and trade culture. History itself created.

Gaze country has not been openly trade with UAE or Middle East alway depending on UN aid package.

13/10/23, 11:27 am - ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

1. I am not broaching this topic from a religious or racial angle - as these 2 are highly sensitive topic.

2. I also not taking sides in the current incidents in the middle east.

3. However I will like to highlight the following wholesome values that we should constantly remind ourselves as well as a beacon whereby others can emulate us.

a. Racial equality, justice and fairness to all in living, jobs, study, healthcare, spaces etc.

b. Religious harmony among all different religions.

c. Mutual respect and trust among different races and religions.

d. Equal opportunities for all races and religions.

13/10/23, 11:28 am - +Rama: This is why we are peaceful nation with a strong military deterrence.

13/10/23, 11:32 am - +Rama: Remember the hock lee bus riots, Maria hertoz (correct? ) racial Incident and the recent little India riots.  Our government has always responded well in handling.

13/10/23, 11:33 am - +Umar M: https://donate.unrwa.org/-landing-page/en_EN

13/10/23, 11:34 am - +Umar M: You may want to rephrase that. 'Arab' defines a general ethnicity. There are Arab Israelis and Arab Singaporeans too.

13/10/23, 11:35 am - +Umar M: This is not a racial, ethnic nor religious matter when discussed in this group.

13/10/23, 11:35 am - +Rama: Not possible as this is a direct referral to the current situation between Israel and hamas

13/10/23, 11:36 am - +Umar M: Then you are misguided.

13/10/23, 11:36 am - +Rama: It does touch on these areas unfortunately

13/10/23, 11:36 am - +Rama: My apologies for your misunderstanding

13/10/23, 11:36 am - +Umar M: Yes but I do not think we should touch on these topics in a REACH chat group lest we fall into a bloodbath of debates with varied members in this group.

13/10/23, 11:37 am - +Rama: Let admin be the judge

13/10/23, 11:37 am - +Umar M: Saying 'Arab atrocities' is like saying 'Chinese student riots' or 'Malay festival riots' thereby having a broad brushstroke on every single member of the community without specifying the exact nature of such calamities.

13/10/23, 11:38 am - +Umar M: It encourages hatred, racial enmity and religious fanaticism which serves no purpose in our society.

13/10/23, 11:40 am - +Umar M: Thank you Danny for a very even-handed and analytical comment. I agree with you.

13/10/23, 11:40 am - +Frankie Wee: Be respect each religion and human equality

13/10/23, 11:40 am - +Umar M: Agreed

13/10/23, 11:42 am - +Frankie Wee: Singapore alway have a harmony exchange culture we enjoy together.

Like Chinese New Year, Christmas or else.

13/10/23, 11:42 am - +Rama: Yes

13/10/23, 11:43 am - +Umar M: I disagree with this. Min. Shanmugam is fine to speak up as he is in the position of leadership and authority.

13/10/23, 11:43 am - +Umar M: Agreed. We are very different from our neighbours.

13/10/23, 11:43 am - +Frankie Wee: ๐Ÿ˜ฐ

13/10/23, 11:44 am - +Frankie Wee: How different?

13/10/23, 11:44 am - +Umar M: I have lived/travelled for work in various parts of the region and I assure you that racism is extreme in those countries.

13/10/23, 11:44 am - +Rama: Hari Raya, Deepavali, Hari Raya Haji and Vesak Day.

13/10/23, 11:44 am - +Rama: Yes

13/10/23, 11:44 am - ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

As long as society and countries adopt such wholesome values, there will be harmony, peace and people can work for prosperity.

There will be less conflict, less friction and there will be peace and peaceful coexistence.

13/10/23, 11:45 am - +Umar M: In one of the countries I lived in, I was not allowed  - by friends of the same race - to speak or spend time with a friend from another race. They frowned upon it and called me names when I befriended a few from other races/religions. Coming from Singapore, I was bewildered as lots of my close friends are not of the same race/religion.

13/10/23, 11:46 am - +Umar M: It sounds like I am making this up but I assure you, it is very real. I am still shocked till today how deep racism runs in some countries.

13/10/23, 11:46 am - +Rama: Expected

13/10/23, 11:46 am - +Rama: True

13/10/23, 11:49 am - +Rama: That's why our secular government is very firm on racial or religious issues

13/10/23, 11:50 am - +Frankie Wee: 1965 after independent and there were a time all of trouble race but we did achieve

13/10/23, 11:53 am - +Rama: LKY was then firm but fair in dealing with trouble makers

13/10/23, 12:01 pm - +Rama: Side step, during the second World War, our founding PM almost got killed by the Japanese saved but by a trishaw driver.  He was about 18 then.  Imagine Singapore now if not for him!?

13/10/23, 12:04 pm - +Rama: ๐Ÿ‘

13/10/23, 12:14 pm - ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

1. Since young I was appalled and saddened by many news of war, conflict, fighting leading to many death, destruction and untold sufferings in the middle east.

2. I was thinking, why people have to resort to such actions to settle scores?

3. Why can't people give and take, empathise and mutually coexist - so that people can live in peace and prosper together?

4. Then I start to read more about the Abrahmic lineage and root that form the religions of Catholic, Christianity and Islam.

5. I discovered all come from the same root but branch out to reach out to different groups of people and communities.

6. A disturbing fact then come to my mind, if they come from the same root, why are they plummeting one another if the final goal is the same...

7. Hence I conclude the following are lacking:-

a. Empathy - able to stand in each other shoes.

b. Mutual respect

c. Mutual trust

d. Mutual peace and prosperity

8. I mull, if they are able to see and manifest the similarities and not gloat over the differences - then chances of reconciliation and coexistence can happen.

9. Then I see some light in recent years before this major incidents - that Arab countries and Israel are signing friendship alliances starting from Egypt, Jordan and recently UAE, some African countries and possibly ---- the warming of possible tie with Saudi Arabia.

10. It certainly warm my heart -- which unfortunately, this unfortunate incident erupted.

And put the warming tie into the fridge. <This message was edited>

13/10/23, 12:14 pm - +Rama: Agree

13/10/23, 1:00 pm - ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

1. Another thing I wish to highlight learning from the lessons of the sudden conflict.

2. We cannot let our guards down, and let complaceny set in, thinking that everything is peaceful, we are doing well, we have arrived.

3. The deception, stealth and the lightning raid of the Hamas - certainly caught Israel intelligence and its military pants down.

4. Hamas certainly lure Israel intelligence to think that they are not interested in fighting and focus mainly in jobs for the Gazans.

5. Israel thought that their high tech secured border double fences are good enough and deploy troops away from the south - is a big mistake and the lapse of complaceny is fatal.

6. Likewise, not too long ago, one of our Presidential candidate sing high tune of shortening our National service supported by many oppositions namely PSP, and other hard core oppositions.

This is a fatal proposition - as Singapore is only a little red dot.

Once overrun - we have no chance to fight back.

Our south to north is a short 30 km, and our east to west about 50 km.

Once breach - casualties will lie on the roads with no buffer.

7. Hence we must never compromise on our security and National Service.

Don't be lure and entice by some unscrupulous politicians poisonous sweet - it can kill everyone of us here. <This message was edited>

13/10/23, 1:01 pm - +Rama: Keep your friends close but your enemy closer !

13/10/23, 1:08 pm - +Rama: ๐Ÿ‘

13/10/23, 1:10 pm - +Rama: Fact should not be doctored.

13/10/23, 1:11 pm - +Rama: Is our red cross doing a fun raiser!?

13/10/23, 1:14 pm - +Rama: Suicide bombers is also not acceptable!

13/10/23, 1:28 pm - +Anne: War is a deception, but not many people understand that. Many people just read from ST, CNA, and they assume they know who’s right who’s wrong.

Wars are just governments fighting and playing strategy games with one another. This includes governments of nations who are not involved in the war but who could have provoked the war and who are pulling strings behind the scenes.

The real victims are the civilians who end up being pawns and collateral damage in the governments’ chess games.

We cannot stay calm when we know of horrors going on in the world. But we can pause and think and not allow ourselves to be drawn into taking any sides. <This message was edited>

The level of racial and religious harmony in Singapore is truly special compared to anywhere else in the world and extremely valuable to us as a nation. In fact, it is core to our identity as Singaporeans. We should never forget that, and we must fight hard to protect it.

13/10/23, 1:38 pm - +Frankie Wee: The world has own government justice between side countries each of state who start the attack against territories. Unfortunately no understanding reasoning country justice is make right or wrong.

๐Ÿ“This is the reply from MFA, Singapore upon my enquiry with them as to why there is no evacuation assistance for the Singaporeans and PRs in Israel :

" Dear Mary, thank you for your feedback. There are currently no plans for dedicated flights by MFA out of Israel as the airport is still in operation with commercial flights by airlines still operating. Should you know any Singaporeans who are having issues with travelling out of Israel, please advise them to contact the Singapore Embassy in Tel Aviv.  "

๐Ÿ“ŒPlease forward to your friends or those whom you know are still in Israel......  we must do self-help first  ...... ( like what our team members have demonstrated yesterday when TURKISH Airlines fails us Big time twice ! )

13/10/23, 3:11 pm - +Rama: Not always true as Ukraine and the israel/Palestinian conflict have a direct bearing on many countries economy so to comment is reasonable

1. A big ground offensive is likely to begin in the next 24 hours into the Gaza strip.

2. Iran proxies in the north at 2 fronts in Lebanon and Syria might join as instigated by Iran.

3. Hence big fights may come from 2 fronts.

4. It is disturbing to read from the news that our tour groups in Singapore are still organising tour groups into West bank and Jerusalem which are only a couple of kilometers from the 2 fronts.

5. Airports will be close the moment the fight begins - and Singaporeans will be trapped and lives will be endangered.

6. Travel advisory is for all Singaporeans to evacuate immediately and not get trapped in the war. <This message was edited>

13/10/23, 4:01 pm - +Anne: No need to waste your energy getting angry. Just reframe this entire covid saga and you will find that it reveals aspects of the government that you never knew existed in the past. For me, I would grateful for such revelations. Once the wolf wearing a sheep skin starts showing its tail, the sheep can either scold the wolf for being incompetent, or plan and prepare to protect itself against the wolf, yes?

Yesterday it’s the vaccine, tomorrow it’ll be a chip inside our bodies. COVID is just a dress rehearsal. Prepare for the real thing. <This message was edited>

13/10/23, 4:02 pm - ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

No plans by Singapore Muslim travel agencies to scrap tours yet amid Israel-Hamas conflict.

One tour group, whose package includes a visit to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the old city of Jerusalem in Israel, will depart Singapore this week as planned.

Seems like Singaporeans don't understand the danger ahead.

13/10/23, 4:05 pm - ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

"Israel calls for all civilians to leave Gaza City.

Israel's call for northern Gaza to evacuate within 24 hours affects about 1.1 million people - nearly half of Gaza's 2.3 million population."

I think a big ground offensive is going to commence soon after 24 hours.

13/10/23, 4:05 pm - ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

"A 'new front' in Hamas war depends on Israel's actions, says Iran".

Iran may open up a new war front at the north by its proxies Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syria - if Israel troops conduct a ground offensive into Gaza which will happen in 24 hours time.

So indeed foreign powers will be drawn in - and a big fight will commence.
