[10:00 am, 28/10/2022] +REACH: 📢 Topic 📢

At the opening of the annual Singapore International Energy Week conference on Tuesday (Oct 25), Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced that Singapore will reach net-zero emissions by 2050 as part of its long-term low emissions development strategy. The Government had previously considered this target but has confirmed that it is on track to achieve net-zero by 2050.

DPM said Singapore has progressively cut its greenhouse gas emissions, achieving a reduction of 32 per cent below business-as-usual levels by 2020 to 52.8 million tonnes. This was double the 16 per cent reduction pledged in 2009, giving the Government the confidence to raise its climate ambition. He said achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 will be a stretch target but a necessary one, and would involve electricity imports, solar energy, carbon offsets and other steps, such as hydrogen.

💬 What are your views on Singapore’s net zero target? How do you think you can contribute to Singapore’s efforts in achieving net-zero emissions by 2050?

Singapore’s efforts and plans in achieving its net-zero target include:

📌 National hydrogen strategy

This strategy will provide a road map of how hydrogen can support Singapore’s decarbonisation efforts, and the steps taken to prepare Singapore for a hydrogen future. Singapore will experiment with the use of advanced hydrogen technologies as well as conduct research and development work to advance them further.

📌 Scaling up green finance

There are plans in the works to turn Singapore into a green financial centre, to effectively channel green capital towards the development of transition projects and climate change solutions around the region. This includes the push for financial innovations and solutions, and progress on data, disclosures and definitions.

📌 Decarbonising power sector

The nation would have approximately 2 gigawatt-peak of solar energy by 2030, which can power up to 350,000 households on a sunny day. This year, Singapore started importing hydroelectric power from Laos under the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project.

📌 Singapore’s built environment

Jurong Lake District will aim for all new developments to achieve net-zero emissions by around 2045. There will be a centralised district cooling network and all new developments will be required to be super low-energy or zero-energy buildings. The district will also be designed to be car-lite and support green mobility options such as cycling and electric vehicle buses.

📌 The public sector will peak emissions around 2025 and achieve net-zero emissions around 2045 under its sustainability movement, while new developments within the Jurong Lake District will reach net-zero emissions around 2045 too.

[11:11 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: 28 October, 2022

To: Our Distinguished Leaders and All Honorable Members

Good morning everyone!

"You create, you plant, you eat, you use, you throw, and nature will give it back to you!"

- - Anonymous

History background:

In 1789, the famous French chemist Antoine Lavoisier (1743-1794) once said, "neither created nor destroyed, it's an evolving ecosystem!" A single atom (carbon ) has always existed. It just changed from here to there! It is this simple yet powerful theory of quality and recycling and protecting our ecosystems today.

In 1976, the U.S. Congress passed the Resource Conservation and Recycling Act, increasing recycling and conservation efforts as waste became a bigger problem. It is estimated that the slogan "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" was b…

[11:14 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Let 2035 be the mid-point of checks and balances before 2050 arrives.

[11:16 am, 28/10/2022] +Grace: We need more green spaces in Singapore, so sad to see another mall again..

[11:18 am, 28/10/2022] +Frankie Wee: What about Singapore forest 🌳?

Land going to building BTO and other industries. We have enough tree for Co2 breath?

[11:20 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: https://youtu.be/dJB2WAKqQ34

[11:23 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Hi Grace, well said.

May I addon... thanks

Given the max of 730sqkm, the town planning game is getting trickier!

One Covid lesson is space. And Space happens to be a strategic asset in our context.

[11:26 am, 28/10/2022] +SL: My part in achieving minimum carbon footprint

1. Reduce driving and take public transport.

2. Drive effectively with a proper plan of the route in advance. Exploring which satellite positioning devices is best for computing the effective route in real-time.

3. Reduced air travel to minimise the carbon footprint, use virtual connect.

4. Doing laundry at batch conserved water and energy.

5. Installed smart IoT gadgets to manage energy consumption to prevent wastage.

6. Cook and eat at home and travel less outside to save carbon footprint.

7. Reduced the number to go shopping and buying bulk online during the discount periods.

8. Recycle, reuse and repair instead of buying new.

[11:26 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Hi Frankie, another good observation.

We need to grow trees. Trees comes in three broad sizes that is S, M, L .

Before we engage in planting trees, perhaps Npark will have to carefully designate where to plant those S (kecil) those M and those L (besar) trees.

Why it matters?

SAFETY, ease of removing and maintenance.

[11:29 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: How about converting PUBLIC/PRIVATE BUSES into ELECTRIC driven buses?

This public-private drivers will enable a big reduction in terms of carbon emissions.

Next comes the electricity Consumptions from households to work Place/workshop!

[11:31 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: How much money to drive these traditional BUSES into E-bus?

Multi billions dollars initiatives?

Can we afford it and if we can, what's the timeline to execute in phases? Hopefully by 2035?

[11:33 am, 28/10/2022] +Frankie Wee: Electricity is use battery lifetime when expired need to replace how many batteries throw away recycle

[11:34 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: Since u al say so much about recycle, reuse and redue

[11:34 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Do we repair or replace appliances especially consumers thingies?

Are certain quantifiable goods that can be REUSED than throw into the Recycling system?

Where are the repair centers if there are some things that could perhaps be SAVED?

[11:34 am, 28/10/2022] +Frankie Wee: It’s just like a iPhone battery life 100% healthy later 10 years down 50% replacement battery

[11:34 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: may i ask how much electitiy a HDB can consume ?

[11:34 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: around 280KW a mnth to 320 KW

[11:34 am, 28/10/2022] +SL: Can consider using the individual solar panel and recharge gadgets in the home

[11:36 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: i see the landed install tower like eqv to 12 Motor units of normal Mtisubutshi i think they inside only 4 - 5 ppl and ewastage in companies etc so before say all these maybe they should think  ?

[11:36 am, 28/10/2022] +SL: Recharge gadgets now don't need to go thru conventional lines. It is a bit slow but conserved carbon footprint on low-watt devices, including recharge power bank.

[11:36 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: How much a HDB ppl can save ?

[11:36 am, 28/10/2022] +Frankie Wee: I would suggest E-Bus use railway electric without battery

[11:37 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: when we only use 300 KW when therich and imported elite use much more thus casuing supply and demand issue

[11:37 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: u see the market at 9 pm still open all fans at AMK

[11:37 am, 28/10/2022] +SL: If we start to recharge via a solar cells, the accumulated amount is significant.

[11:37 am, 28/10/2022] +Frankie Wee: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolleybuses_in_Singapore

[11:37 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: What if the future of battery is composed of NA (salt)?

Both Lithium and Salt has one commonality that is Single Atom... referring to the Periodic elements Chart.

Salt is able to withstand up to 300c of heat unlike Lithium that will disintegrade once the temperature reaches 125c.

That's the Future of battery, Salt is a definite solution than Lithium which is a highly toxic to recycle or worse to dispose it.

[11:38 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: u see the companies in downtown is alllight up when no one in office unless for security reason

[11:39 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Hi SL, good point.

Solar lasted 12 to 13 hours depending on the lunar count.

Two, it needs a capacitor and storage facilities which can be gigantic and costly too.

Solar is great too! Thanks

[11:40 am, 28/10/2022] +Frankie Wee: What if there less sun on mid year between July to Dec likely more rain.

[11:41 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Hi KL, well said!

How about our SCHOOLS, fully lighted days, weekends and months?

Especially these days the cost of Energy has gone up by 30% and can increase further?

[11:41 am, 28/10/2022] +SL: Using solar @ hdb need to follow the hdb (Common Property and Open Spaces) rules. There are advanced solar cell devices to use within the hdb unit.

[11:41 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: u go see thomson area alot of those Mitshibuti tower units

[11:42 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: u go AMK and some market fan turn on till late evening unless is washing floor

[11:42 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Frankie, thanks...

Bingo!

How about rainy days and cloudy days.

Btw, isn't heavy rain will be the norm too? Aka CLIMATE CHANGE AND UNPREDICTABLE WEATHER PATTERNS, THIS WORLD NOW!

[11:42 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: unless for finance i will give them a chance cos they scare got robber so they never swtich off .

[11:43 am, 28/10/2022] +SL: Solar panel installation outside the hdb unit needs to apply approval from authority.

[11:43 am, 28/10/2022] +Frankie Wee: EMA licensed

[11:43 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: NOt possible as solar need to til to some degree and if drop how ?

[11:43 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: three days wind four days rain ( in Hokkien - 三天风四天雨)

[11:44 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: Sg HDB is too close to have fuull expose of sunlight so only roof top

[11:45 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: That's why SUN CABLE in Australia will be our driver for renewable and sustainable energy!

[11:45 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Lacking capacity and Cannot sustain households of 500 people for 12 hours consumption too.

[11:47 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Sun Cable is the answer into 2035 and further!

Just like Newater plants, desalination plants and PUB drainage system.

Simply, we are tapping all Water to use. That's a survival strategy!

[11:48 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: Actually this have another hidden issue in long run as not related to this opic i wont bring up got chance than say

[11:48 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: It took PUB more than 2 decades to systemize our drainages from lonkang to river! That's scaling in play.

[11:49 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: but still flooding lol

[11:49 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Let's leave NO STONES unturn...

Bring it up, thanks

[11:49 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: not related  :D

[11:50 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Akan datang....DEEP TUNNELING will solve it

[11:50 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: in fact deep tunnel caus more flooding

[11:50 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: cos underground water capcity will drop

[11:50 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Example is sewage, deep TUNNELING at 60m down, big diameter too....

[11:51 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: as now sg seal up all the river thus all water in the soil cant let out into the sea

[11:51 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Channel to elsewhere.....like a MRT is a people mover, these tunnels are waste and Water movers

[11:52 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: thus now we face high surface run off and water cant let into sea or absord into the ground

[11:52 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Wait....

[11:52 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: but i not a prof in geography so bteer ask those who know :D

[11:53 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: i see after tunneling in AMK i ssee ponding on road

[11:54 am, 28/10/2022] +SL: It depended on the sunrise and sunset direction and exposed area in the hdb unit

[11:54 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Antoine Lavoisier (1743-1794) once said, "neither created nor destroyed,

It means 10cm of rainfall, this 10cm will not disappear.

Either you use it or you contain it to be used later on.

Nor nothing is created or destroyed.

It applies to consumers goods, foods etc

[11:55 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: An issue of symmetry or asymmetry

[11:55 am, 28/10/2022] +SL: It's depended on which type of panel and devices.

[11:55 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: most HDB will build face north or south

[11:55 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: As no one will want o buy face west right u think u like jounery to the west

[11:56 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: if build east mean behind face west ur egg will smell in 2 days

[11:56 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: if u dont believe look at your block :D

[11:57 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: What if the future rise in Sea level?

You transport the sea/river water to elsewhere into a DEEP &  BIG 'pond'.

What's the byproduct of desalination? Na

[11:58 am, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Wind factor and Natural ventilation matter most...

One lesson from covid.

[11:58 am, 28/10/2022] +Frankie Wee: Build on top roof flat we can when ready rising level.

[11:58 am, 28/10/2022] +KL: u know west no wind ?

[11:58 am, 28/10/2022] +SL: Also whether thin film or polycrystalline panel use for the device. Don't see monocrystalline panel designed for high rise indoor use.

[0:00 pm, 28/10/2022] +Noraini: Basic nursery hdb rooftop.  Town council ? to manage the small garden

[0:01 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: water tank how ?

[0:02 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: i foresee sg will build HDB like whose in AMK 30- 40 stoery and with 4 water tank at most on top of the water tank have solar panel

[0:03 pm, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Hi SL, good point. Thanks

Is Poly or mono better?

For the sake of heat absorbing, poly?

Are these Green materials?

How about using poly or cubic microchips configurations?

[0:03 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: they will lock up cos for security reason

[0:03 pm, 28/10/2022] +Frankie Wee: By the year 2100 level sea will rising

[0:03 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: not something i should waoory

[0:04 pm, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Sad to say, much much earlier.

All because of unpredictable Himalayans and the polar ice sheets....

[0:04 pm, 28/10/2022] +SL: Rooftop belong to hdb if I am correct.

[0:05 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: The best option is to build water barrier like nether land i se sg doing it at changi V to east coast

[0:05 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: so nothing can add on liao

[0:05 pm, 28/10/2022] +Frankie Wee: If the flat is collapsed by sea level due to floor become muddy. Our flat already destroy.

[0:05 pm, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: What if SINGAPORE will experience HEAVIEST RAINFALLS say out of 364 days....the rainy days is 25%-28% probability of occurance?

[0:06 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: Most SG flat is close to 50 years so by 2050 all need to rebuild liao as current conrete is not made to withstad 100 years

[0:06 pm, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: You got it...

Lavoisier said...100cm of Water= 100 cm of groundwater

Thanks

[0:06 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: if u say roman concrete is not current modern concreted

[0:06 pm, 28/10/2022] +Grace: Can we have more community veggies instead of ornamental plants?

[0:07 pm, 28/10/2022] +Frankie Wee: Wonder HDB maybe change 50 years lease instead 99 years otherwise save cost

[0:08 pm, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: By Building Dykes will not solve rising tides...

Lunar count and moon these days are not that 'stable' too!

Supermoon, blood moon eclipses....

[0:08 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: u spent so much money to build and torn 50 years lol

[0:09 pm, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Makes some sense in terms of values, allocations, Sustainability and investments.

[0:09 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: Is HDb mean for invesment ?

[0:09 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: omG

[0:10 pm, 28/10/2022] +Frankie Wee: Yes it’s like buy use investment

[0:11 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: Today topic is recycle

[0:11 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: Btw one qns why no one say SG car is wasterful only last 10 years ?

[0:12 pm, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: What's the depth

of Semakau land mass, surround Water depth?

[0:15 pm, 28/10/2022] +L or BL: Transition to Electric Vehicles. Boost our water, wind, sun power capability. Ban all non biodegrable disposable plastics. Figure out how to use the warm air from air-con to heat water. Stop Malls being so cold.

[0:17 pm, 28/10/2022] +SL: 💬 What are your views on Singapore’s net zero target? How do you think you can contribute to Singapore’s efforts in achieving net-zero emissions by 2050?

[0:20 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: i dont think i can do more :D , sleep on the floor no need aircon , no need fan no need bed.  walk to buy gocceries , dont go out unneccassry

[0:20 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: no car cos too expensive

[0:21 pm, 28/10/2022] +Grace: I think we just need to live with balance, without extremes... history teaches us about yin and yang

[0:22 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: Agree wanted to write this to econmics forum , but later make a laugthing stock lol

[0:22 pm, 28/10/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

1. To achieve net zero carbon emissions - we have to first address the source of carbon emission, the root cause which are oil, petrol and high carbon gas - as fuel for energy and electricity.

2. Thus the solutions will be to source for low or green carbon emission fuel to generate energy and electricity.

3. In addition, consumers need constantly monitor their energy usage to prevent overconsumption of electricity by daily monitoring of their electrical meter.

Notice that many meter are still analogue and need to physically photo the meter readers.

If government take step to make the household IoT - then household can remotely monitor the IoT via internet using our smartphone or laptop as it is IP based - and can regulate our electricity usage.

Household can submit their meter reading for month end billing as well.

4. Currently our service provider need to buy our fuel, oil and natural gas from the open market which are subjected to price fluctuations as price and output are set by OPEC - where we have little control.

5. Hence actively transforming to green and sustainable energy can achieve the following goals:-

a. Low carbon emission and thus prevent adverse global climate.

b. Using green energy can lift ourselves out of oil, petrol and natural gas that are subjected to price and output fixing by OPEC.

6. Hence looking at natural elements that are free, abundant and unlimited supply to us such as water, sun, matter etc. become important.

[0:22 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: like i always say optimal is the key

[0:24 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: Actually a solar panel need how much energy to made did any one know ?

[0:24 pm, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Extend usage for many daily electronic tools unless it's totally unable?

[0:24 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: i buy a LED light for 19.90 saving will only come in around the 5 year base on today 0.31 cent  per KW/H

[0:25 pm, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Likewise for solar panellings, the RECOVERY of such investment takes time.

[0:25 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: i buy a floursent light 4.90 also ard 5 years  saving is 8 w per hours , i have to buy new ceiling light shell

[0:25 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: in tern of energy and material i see is same

[0:25 pm, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Dollars and Sense

[0:26 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: cos i have to dismantal the metal

[0:26 pm, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: It's about recovery and recovering

[0:26 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: if we incorp in there is not much saving

[0:27 pm, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: This Green ways is a total new ways and concepts that cut across our lives and into our livelihoods!

[0:27 pm, 28/10/2022] +SL: Dependencies are high; Monocrystalline panel only got ~20% effectiveness. The rest is lower than this rate.

[0:27 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: the energy use to make the solar panel

[0:28 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: i wonder did anyone cal this

[0:28 pm, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: The US nuclear council is turning into 'new nuclear' energy... that's latest thinking

[0:28 pm, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Nothing created nor destroyed...

[0:29 pm, 28/10/2022] +Grace: Actually, low tech is more high tech...

[0:29 pm, 28/10/2022] +SL: Not sure evaluation was done on this, as we are end users, hence not counting from production right?

[0:29 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: Hahaha

[0:29 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: See

[0:29 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: when i change my LED light i incrop everything in

[0:29 pm, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Hi Grace, your reversal thinking....very good and refreshing too!

Uncommon thinking

[0:30 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: Sleep on the floor no need aircon and fan

[0:30 pm, 28/10/2022] +KL: maybe will catch a cold thou

[0:30 pm, 28/10/2022] +SL: That is referring to fusion, USA and China are leading this type of generators if I m not wrong

[0:31 pm, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Back to Kampong days... will try to change this lifestyle.

What if hot day and nite comes?

[0:31 pm, 28/10/2022] +SL: In r&d

[0:31 pm, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: Already done, GE USA

[0:32 pm, 28/10/2022] +Grace: There is a lot of wisdom in simplicity

[0:33 pm, 28/10/2022] +Smiley face: VERY good, Grace! Thanks!

Unconventional thinkings will solve complex issues...

The green and sustainable energy solutions we can explore are:-

1. Hydrogen gas that are now commercially viable.

Hydrogen gas are derived from electrolysis of splitting water H2O into hydrogen elements and oxygen elements by introducing electrical current with electrodes.

But electric current needs fuel - and I think we have managed to find and use ammonia as the energy source to make production of hydrogen gas, storage and transport commercially viable.

Seawater as our fuel  is abundant and unlimited in Singapore as we are surrounded by sea.

b. Solar energy that uses sun, another unlimited fuel - will be also advantages to Singapore.

However, solar energy that uses solar cell and solar panels - are not so reliable as sun, rain and cloud can affect the performance of producing reliable energy.

3. Geothermal which we can dig deep into our earth to discover heat to generate electricity - as hot region when using thermoelectric device or conductor to cold region can trigger electron movement to produce electricity.

Earth we have supply but quite limited due to our small land space.

4. The more controversial issue is exploring safe nuclear energy - specifically nuclear fusion to create an artificial sun - to provide unlimited supply of energy and electricity.

Later will talk about nucleus fusion and why it is a safe and unlimited source of energy.

[0:35 pm, 28/10/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

Nuclear Fusion

1. Traditional nuclear reactor uses nuclear fission - breaking down of nucleus into smaller nucleus that will produce heat. Heat in turn produce electricity - when introduce into thermo-electric devices from hot to cold region - as electron are charge to produce electricity.

But nuclear fission when breaking down of nucleus atom, into smaller nuclei will in addition to generate heat - also produce radioactive waste that will cause radiation which is harmful to health.

2. Nuclear fusion on the other hand, is merging of 2 or more hydrogen nucleus into a bigger helium nucleus - and by doing so generate heat to produce electricity.

3. As nucleus has electrostatic charges that are repulsive in nature - and will not fused together - hydrogen nucleus will have to be heated at very high temperature - up to 100 million degree celsius to form a "plasma state" for the hydrogen nucleus to merge and fuse into a larger helium nucleus.

Plasma state is the 4th state - other than matter, liquid and gas.

4. To maintain the plasma state at such a high temperature, it will melt any container that holds the plasma.

Hence a doughnut shape containment introduced with strong magnetic field to ensure limited movement of the plasma in the doughnut containment without touching the wall of the containment will be required to prevent melting due to the high temperature.

5. Plasma state is like the nature of a Sun - hence nuclear fusion is operating like an "artificial sun".

6. Nuclear fusion unlike nuclear fission, will produce negligible radioactive waste that can decomposed more rapidly than nuclear fission.

In addition, the fuel of nuclear fission come from unlimited H20 - water - whereby Deuterium - is the isotope of hydrogen found in seawater.

7. The only problem is the energy required to achieve a temperature of 100 million degree celsius to achieve nucleus fusion in a plasma state like a "sun" will make it very costly.

8. High power Laser beam is one avenue that can be explored to produce the high temperature through compressing and heating the fuel (H20) for hydrogen nucleus to reach a plasma state for them to fuse - by overcoming their electrostatic repulse state - to produce heat to generate electricity - through hot region to cold region from a thermoelectic conductor - whereby electron move to produce electricity.

9. Nuclear fusion is safe and not dangerous - even by explosion, terrorism or natural disaster - as if the nuclear reactor is damaged and cannot hold the hot plasma, the plasma will expand and cool down instead of exploding.

Whether nuclear plants or reactors, or nuclear aircraft carriers.

But if in future we develop "artificial sun" through fusion of hydrogen nucleus from water isotope that doesn't produce or negligible waste - through plasma state like Sun.

[1:14 pm, 28/10/2022] +Boon: The aspiration is good and we should contribute to global efforts to manage climate changes. However, we also need to understand how we plan to hit this goals, and for some details least it backfires on everyday lives like with higher costs or greater inconveniences to drop our standard of living. Like how zealous planning to be Green can backfire in other countries now. For example, from now to 2050, what does this target mean for Singapore Oil & Gas industry, companies and people who work there? What about for high tech industries that needs cold rooms like Pharmaceutical? Would it get translated into carbon taxes for everyday activities like use of cars?

[1:14 pm, 28/10/2022] +Ken: Cannot totally relied on it… as it is so far 😅

[1:15 pm, 28/10/2022] +Boon: For Green Finance, it should not mean that SG SMEs and Fintechs that cannot afford to be Green or spend time to report on their "Greenness" will ironically face higher costs of financing or be deprived of financing...

[1:15 pm, 28/10/2022] +Ken: People will have to reskill, expect many people to change and switch over time. Carbon tax already pushing some to leave

Re-skillling is important but will a new employer pays someone new to the industry even though he/she has 10 years of other industry experience? Can we/MOM understand and promote greater tolerance of people without relevant experience who needs to look for jobs in other industry? But, will this sort of "migration"  lead to dilution of experiences in the target industries, impacting overall competitiveness?

He said achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 will be a stretch target but a nece…

[2:23 pm, 28/10/2022] +Ken: Great question.. for now recycling not so easy… forgot watch it somewhere… as the solar encapsulation is still plastic so life span is not super high as well..

[2:24 pm, 28/10/2022] +Ken: Quick search is 20 to 30 years…

[2:25 pm, 28/10/2022] +Ken: But technology advances much faster… sometimes it is better to change newer version for better yield

[2:26 pm, 28/10/2022] +Ken: Solar only generate electricity in the day.. on rainy days, traditional power source would have to ramp up to cover for day that are not sunny.

[2:27 pm, 28/10/2022] +Ken: So technology advance in power management need to be better in order to tap on solar for feasibility study as well

[2:38 pm, 28/10/2022] +SL: Technology plays a crucial part in zero-emission and reducing carbon footprint. I don't think we want to go back old-day method of managing the environment. I see it as high tech in conserving and protecting this planet is inevitable.

[2:39 pm, 28/10/2022] +Ken: Totally switch is not possible.. more hybrid would be more cost effective and stable

[2:40 pm, 28/10/2022] +SL: I agreed. It takes time and effort to achieve it without jeopardizing the quality of living.

[2:41 pm, 28/10/2022] +Ken: Singapore water approach is unthinkable but made possible… think that is one of the impossible feat that Singapore achieve that as singaporean I am proud

Two or more can be considered a team and your team mate! Are we in the search of that Leon Battista Alberti (1404–72), called “a man can do all things if he will.” the modern Renaissance" men and women often referred as talents? Perhaps so? Or are we also looking for Iron Man that unites all into one team. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was a true hero and Iron Man of India!

How to start building one that will last a longer time and more critically enables to face  uncertainties and unforseeable situations whether is a one-off or many on-going projects?

People matters most in crafting such a robust team that can takes the 'knockings and shockings' of this existential world we all are living in.

Futurising?

'Monkey see Monkey do, that's the old circles of business?' Is this exceptional team an experiment or is it experienced the same old driver of a successful team?

People are relying on others to impart knowledge, skills and previous experiences that is the economics of educations and trainings in hope to land the ideal job. This is what parents, industries and young adults all of them are hopeful about the future?

Inescapable conclusion, the learning curves of many successful ventures evolve around people and the bravery to experiment. This Paradigm shifter, Thomas Kuhn would think alike as a new way of hiring, of rewarding people and so is this exceptional Team!

System 2 is slower, more deliberative, and more logical.

At the Singapore Economic Policy Forum on 18 October, Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Lawrence Wong highlighted the issue that Singapore’s economy places too much of a problem on cognitive abilities and does not sufficiently value those engaging in “hands-on and heart work” like technical, service and community care roles.

In particular, DPM Wong was concerned about a growing divergence between the starting pay for Institute of Technical Education (ITE), polytechnic and university graduates, whereby “the median starting salary for a university graduate is almost twice that of an ITE graduate”.

💬 What are your views on the current efforts to uplift lower-wage workers? What more can be done for a mindset shift by employers and society, in recognizing those engaging in "hands-on and heart work" ?

Speaking at the forum, DPM Wong said: “We must move away from preconceptions that academic success should be prized above all others. Instead, we must respect those who labour with their hands and hearts, and confer upon them the same status as other paths. We must also give them opportunities to advance in their respective fields, and not pigeonhole them into specific tasks, or hold them back unfairly.”

DPM Wong added that the government is already tackling the divergence in salaries through tightening foreign worker quotas and raising the local qualifying salary, while also uplifting the wages of lower-wage workers through the Progressive Wage Model. The government has also invested more to raise the quality of vocational instruction by levelling up the ITE skills-based curriculum to give students deeper industry relevant skills while also increasing the number of work-study diplomas across sectors to give students a career head start after graduation.

However, DPM Wong stressed that there needed to be a fundamental mindset shift in society – by employers, and by society. “Some of these shifts will not be easy to attain. But if we work together, I am confident that we can expand the possibilities for fulfilment and success for every generation of Singaporeans,” said Mr Wong.

[11:23 am, 19/10/2022] +65 9617 1577: I salute that sentiment. For too long, vocational careers have been sidelined and over  time it will create a greater divide in society. Just look at the U.S., for instance. Even with minimum wage laws, they could only sense the unfairness when the pandemic struck and realised that these type workers were  were quite essential after all.

But the main thing is the increasing divide that it creates in society when income disparities begin to also create a ‘classed’ society. The wage gap has to be decreased in order to maintain an egalitarian society.

[11:24 am, 19/10/2022] +Linda Seng: Yes they can, will have depend if they are willingly to upgrade themselves after ITE.

Got a degree / diploma  or no degree / diploma, it should only be considered for a higher bonus if he / she reached KPIs. Not for progression. Totally not fair for most blue collar workers

[11:42 am, 19/10/2022] +Linda Seng: Yes the issue here is whether you fit the bill or not.

[11:54 am, 19/10/2022] +Smiley face: 19 October, 2022

Good morning everyone!

"Kudos! One threading and many benefits to sew pockets of inequalities, this bigger social fabric...A cry of Bravo (brave moves)!"

- - annoymous

Let's begin this Thesis:

"The Ecosystems of the Future,  the Workplace and the Enablers?"

"Environment is the shaper, the shaker and the shifter of the spectrum of Human behaviors...'

- - annoymous

“环境是人类行为光谱的形状、震动和转变……”

- - 无名

The Environments; the 'helps' and the 'harms' concepts '害或爱':

What is economics? In simple words, to make a meaningful (dignity & respectful) living in one's lifetime.

What is a working/workable environment? It is more than accessing one's business and workplace! Many businesses, bosses and workers are well-aware of this off-site workplace (WFM). Perhaps there are several crucial considerations prior to setting up a productive, an accountable and meaningful off-site working environment! What are the impedements in gaining benefits from an off-site or on-site workplace?

Hard-wired?

Meaningful and tailored digital tools and infrastructures from communication to cloud. How about digital friendly, zerolised carbon footprint, transforming and adaptable skills, are these enablers or are there broken links? Why some people are thinking and weaving within the cocoon of their thoughts, mind blocked and will it affects decision making?

Soft wirings?

Human connectivity and mission driven purposes from daily tasks, to quarterly targets, to annual achievements and so on.

The key is purposeful and quantifiable outcomes whether is positive, negative and the KPI itself. Open the stacked cards and reveal the realities of one's life, each outcome differs human to human, success and/or failure!

The limitations of "different folks different strokes?

What are the existing pools of skilled workers out from schools or trainings and the entire ecosystem of a country education? How about the existing workforce and the workers of tomorrow? Where and what is the size and the allocations (or missed allocations) of the human capital for targeted skills of tomorrow's industrial reset?

Perimeter or Parameter?

Is it nature in actions or is it all along, human actions & interventions or nature first then comes nurture?

A baker can never become a coder and a scientist cannot possibly turning to be an actor! Are these paths destined, or are these failures and successes, or perhaps are there elements of (unknown) 'naturally' selections that evolve since the birth of mankind?

"Never underestimate a man who overestimates himself..."    - - Franklin D. Roosevelt

“不要低估一个高估自己的人。”

- - 富兰克林·罗斯福

The Exceptions of Team building?

If a human is make up of any one or two or all three broad bends that is competencies, behaviors and natural abilities (selections - 天生我才定有用). Perhaps it is more important to further understand & define each individual traits and weaknesses from entreprising, innovative, intellectual, hands-on or in-between two. Each person will have a distinct inclination towards one of these five categories with exceptions for people whom posses two of a kind variables also those whom changed career path during midway of their work-life. What are the criteria and selection tests to pull in a team? These 'screening' tests, is it solely based on academic achievements, or biggest failure, or relevant past successes, or personality or, or sit-down abilities test, or face to face, and combinations of up to three factors?

One important consideration in hiring is to understand the limitations of any person than thinking about his or her limitless capabilities. Is this prudent (make) or reckless (break) or any exception to consider?

By mixing and matching these weighted variations (limitation & diversity can also inter-connected) including age and nationality into your team to fit your mission, the strategies, risks stratification, and the goals. It is an exceptional team in the making excepts your competitors whom still figuring ways out and do remember to make it a FUN venture! What's quantum entanglement, can this latest finding be applied too?

"Starts planting that baby Tembusu now, a continuum, it takes a lifetime...!"

- - annoymous

Using complexity to solve complex problems?

Leaders to Managers to co-workers in sync, it's organic that flows up and down also down and up.

How's the flow?

A systemic upheaval approach: The strategy, implement and execute are flows of work from daily to the multi-years visions.

It is paramount in this hybrid setup aka off-site works to level the communications and connectivity. Afterall, aren't we dealing with human to human whether internally or externally (micro+macro perspectives)? That's itself is an ecosystem in the making! Will each system succeed or failed?

"What if meaningless replacing the importance of meaningful (ends) and/or a purposeful (resolves) narrative?"

- - annoymous

Never do things out of greed or rush all for the sake of scaling bigger & higher and hoping for faster success?

Plan things (business or acquisition) with meanings (purpose), for it will bring you less unintended challenges and pains! Should 'meaningless' problems challenge you, one after the others, people will experience a period of self disillusion and the larger harm to a team or a community or an economy?

So how to move closer to success? A business or any larger entity, making things simpler and workflow less complex! Why so? Does it means simple thinking is the key and not OVER thinking?

By adding or introducing more complexity into an existing complex situation will yield unfavorable outcomes, or to slack or cover up more mistakes under the carpet and roll them over and over, or worse it implodes into pieces!

It is smarter to dig into the ROOTS of each problem very often to re-investigate the past performances and challenges to uncover the original truth as to why it is recurring over and over in various shapes and forms!

What's the difference between an experienced worker versus a talented workers with experienced?

Is experience a basic ingredient to success and a meaningful career or talent is the key attribute in any situations? How about a person's character and attitude in life that will total to the Dynamics of any organisation into a passive, or a pro-active, or a combative culture?

What's about culture?

It is a way of doing things normally or the way or the highway, or the 'normal' way of life?

A combative working environment usually is a 'dogs eat dog' and a highly strung individuals competing each other to succeed regardless of ethics or moral! This overly-merited office has common momentum of fast and busy, and no time to waste. Where as in a passive environment, the daily workload compared to the highly strung one is much lowered tone and these workers and managers are in sync to tend to slow the flows of work. The 'exceptional' team perhaps is a pro-active one and a convergence of skills and talents! Why so? It comprises a spectrum of personalities from the slackers to the achievers. Make no mistake, these slackers are productive but they tend to be mellowed and slower thinkers. It is crucial in demanding and/or urgent moments, this organic team will stand steadier than the former two examples. It is about people and mixing (or mismatched) the right amount of different people to sync a COMMON tune not just relying on skills or talents will help or may harm, all these efforts will impact performance and importantly, minimizing costly mistakes and corrections! Aren't all these truth or merely a painting of colorful words?

How about Hopes and Happiness?

Many experts/gurus often laughed at this hopes and happiness concept especially in an office settings? If one worker is unhappy with the other or his/her superior, what's the unintended consequences that this unhappy worker will contribute to this team and fellow workers? Will these unhappiness affect the team dynamics?

It will distort others to think HARDER if things are actually that wrong! If you are feeling hopeless, wouldn't you start to think, 'what's the point'? Is that what many people are saying lately, aka 'quiet quitters'? Why quit only if one is feeling hopeless? How about salaries, benefits and equitable (or short-change) rewards?

So how to link this two H-H? One, is not to be presumptuous over other people and exercise consideration whenever tough human to human frictions occur, that's what business experts called the sciences of managing people! Will research proven methods work or better still using AI, or the best is yet to be, using human touch to motivate and to move others to work together (in sync)?

Two, things may work well that is to treat each other honestly, appreciates others efforts and give abit of slack to one another!

Three, to view each human being as an unique piece of mosaic (chip) and humans are never receptive to any changes or having to face up to a new and unfamiliar environment. It needs time to adjust and to adapt to these changes and surroundings in order to fit into the larger space of a bigger motif of purposes and meanings.

Lastly, how to solve inflation starting from the workplace, sounds complex isn't it?

The 2050 Future, the 4-days work week and more eventful?

Is the world heading into a big mist of metaverse (extraordinary and virtually extremes) where AI marries VR to form AIR?

This 'AIR' will create your future co-workers, your talk-to buddies, even your lived ones and spouse, all inclusively in this AIR till the day arrives (ends) and please don't let the 'HUMAN TOUCH' fade away!

[11:59 am, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: Without addressing the drawbacks in Current education system, it's no point talking about wages or wage gap.

Previously mentioned here

How many total local students vs How many able to get local Uni degree.

Why not allow students to study higher, and why filtering

Refiltering

Again refiltering

Where as other countries one can easily get bachelor cert despite (50% marks in JC or Olevel)

(Again some people here itself told, education system is soo good, and they need rererefiltration to bring out best of the best (not sure the. Why this best of the best of the best not even 800)

And previously someone said Paper qualifications not matter much..

(And i Surely say It is to enter and get to the ladder you need it,

Once u are at the ladder 🪜 its the skills …

[11:59 am, 19/10/2022] +Smiley face: Unique way in looking, like your dimensional view!

Or that ageing brain and BLURR eyes playing with words.... importantly, have FUN!

[0:03 pm, 19/10/2022] +Smiley face: Meritocracy?

A nation of graduates?

Or a spectrum of talents and skills?

[0:04 pm, 19/10/2022] +Smiley face: Meaningful and Purposeful, two keys that will never "play" you out?

[0:05 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: Meritocry works when everyone starts at the SAME POINT

Now with Great income inequality

Those who can afford homes near best schls

Those who afford tuitions, extra help from Parents etc

This group are at advantage

The other low and Middle income group left behind and behind.

(This group just not having enough support, that doesn't mean that there are no clever abv avg students from this group)

The thing which worked well in the beginning

Will no longer works

[0:07 pm, 19/10/2022] +Noraini: 😢

[0:09 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: As far i know a lot of foreigners in local uni during my time .

[0:09 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: And When MNCs cone here they want degrees

I have no data, except that heard from friends

Thats why i asked How many total students

How many able to Go Local Universities.

The percentage?

Is it 70% or

50%?

What meritocracy we are talking about here

Filtering and refiltering

What kind of stress we are giving children

P6 sitting And studying enormous subjects with super analytical questions

Half this students already will lose interest in Studies

And remaining half will be sick of studies

And hate the education system by O level

Everything is about the IP students

Why this is happening

Why students are in soo much stress

Why children not having zeal or joy of studies

Why teachers are leading stressful life

Rather than happliy teaching??

[0:10 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: Heard the same!

[0:11 pm, 19/10/2022] +Smiley face: Unique ways to see the Dimensional and the Dynamics of change of the mindsets?

Stem - Science, Tech, Engr, Med

Leaves - let education elevates everyone

Roots- Reorganizing our Origins  Themes and Systems

Tree - Together Reaching out to Everyone & Entities

[0:11 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: Education should be such a way that it should make the child understand the importance

It should make the child to have the zeal to know what they don't know

To have aim to go higher and higher

This deffinatly not happening here

And those who argue it worked last time

Last is last time

So plz don't bring last time

This is New generation

New issues

Many things affecting children and parents

And every one lives

[0:12 pm, 19/10/2022] +L or BL: Agreed.

[0:15 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: Unless the root cause is addressed no good thing will happen

The inequality grows

The income inequality grows

New immegrants will totally replace the current children generation (at least70% of higher income group)

(Forget about solving ...no one likes to  Address the issues in education)

[0:17 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: This is whats going to happen..

Locals ends up in lpw and middle income groups

The rest of top tier will be filled with Students

Who has happy childhood

With less stressful education

Who managed to choose what they want to study

(This foreign group of immigrants will replace future local groups)

At present it may not be so obvious

In future it will be soo much visible

This things need to addressed now

Rather than later when we face it!

[0:17 pm, 19/10/2022] +Linda Seng: Agreed

[0:19 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: u know i know mean it almost true lol

[0:19 pm, 19/10/2022] +Linda Seng: This issue is surfacing now.....

[0:19 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: excatly a decade

[0:19 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: :D

[0:20 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: it very visible liao

[0:21 pm, 19/10/2022] +Smiley face: So how and what about?

Human at work...

Foreigners doing ' that hands-on' jobs?

Foreigners doing "that thinking" jobs?

Singaporeans doing "selective or no more" jobs?

[0:21 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: Congrat we lie flat lol

[0:22 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: Many of my friends kids my kid last year

Asked their parents

Why do they need to give SO HARD PAPERS IN PSLE?

WHY DO THEY GIVE SUCH A WAY THAT WE MUST NOT GET GOOD MARKS?

I told they wanted to see who are the brilliant 1-2% ones .

I Would actually say

Child rights are totally ingored in Singapore

Educators ignore

Parents ignore

Society ignores

So far when i go out during 2pm around

(Last time n now my house is near schools)

All i see  tired unhappy children faces

Hardly can see any one coming out with bright happy face

Including my child

(I feel sorry for my child)

[0:24 pm, 19/10/2022] +Linda Seng: Not all parents ignore, it is just the education system that is making the parents stressful too.

[0:24 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: Yeah may be la

By going through unhappy stressful childhood

Students already FEDUP WITH LIVING

Living robotic life with no fun

So at least work place they might want to take chance ..

Let them be

At least let them what they want to...may be a year or so

Later they got no choice to accept any job...what to do

It's the life..

[0:25 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: Agree..

Ignoring me

I feel sad

I always remind my child its ok

But apart from i do nothing

Like asking for change

Demanding for change

I do nothing)

[0:25 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: Your child is young ?

[0:26 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: Sec1 now

[0:26 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: Including me..

[0:26 pm, 19/10/2022] +Linda Seng: Example the 3 days PSLE exam breaks, more than 50% of the P6 students still go back to sch or go online lessons.....Not happening in 1 school but many

[0:26 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: Congrat :D , when you sent them to Uni and come out see them do call centre or grab how ur feeling ?

[0:26 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: No choice

[0:26 pm, 19/10/2022] +Linda Seng: Mine is P6 this year....see him stressful I also feel so stressful for him

[0:27 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: how will u feel ?

[0:27 pm, 19/10/2022] +Wai Xin: as an educator in public university, my observation is the foreign students accounts for only about a handful in each undergraduate class. maybe 1-2 at most 4 in a class of 40. and where they do appear, often i can see their drive and hunger.

my take is, the workplace must be willing to change their hiring mindset. and look beyond the paper qualifications.

unfortunately HR are not hiring managers and may not be well equipped to understand what makes a good candidate other than looking brands on the degree paper.

hiring managers on the other hand have little time to perform candidate filtering. this resulted in a lot of missed opportunity and frustration.

furthermore, if we want MNC to hire local skilled talent without paper qualifications, it is difficult for them to answer to stakeholders in home country.

[0:27 pm, 19/10/2022] +Linda Seng: Yes left with no choice

[0:27 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: Problem is with syllabus

Problem is STAMPING THEM

UR GOOD U CAN GO GOOD SCHL

UR not so good

U will be going to So called neighborhood schl

(Plz la no discussion of All schls are good  schls.. MOE slang

Don't want to hear here)

2. Regardless of university graduates or polytechnic graduates or ITE graduates.

3. It is the "economic outputs or services" - that are valued by consumers and businesses - which then are translated to how much consumers are willing to pay and how much business are willing to pay the salaries.

[0:30 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: 10 % wor in uni , ITE or em3  produce 1/6 a year

[0:31 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: that not a big problem now is malasyisa uni also can get good job in SG :D

[0:32 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: Its not about how many locals in Uni

How many total students in one year

Harping on paying high for foreign graduates and paying less on local non-graduates - totally miss the point.

DPM Lawrence Wong also dwell on :-

Important to be open to foreign talents that being jobs to local people.

And at the same time, deepen our grooming of locals in 3 categories of our local workers to earn higher income.

We must not be transfix on being xenophobia - that will backfire and hurt us.

Let us learn the lesson of Brexit.

[0:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: have u experince before ?

[0:33 pm, 19/10/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

How has Brexit - to protect local jobs and keep out immigrants - affect UK in Economy, GDP, trade, wealth and jobs

1. UK people why in referendum vote for Brexit - because they want to control their borders and don't want EU immigrants to come to UK to compete with them on jobs.

2. They thought that by Brexit, the locals can get jobs from the business.

3. But EU market use to be about $20 trillion GDP.

4. With Brexit after UK pull out of EU market, UK GDP is $3 trillion and EU GDP fall to $17 trillion.

5. UK business is unable to tap the big EU common market - as they no longer enjoy the tariff free EU market - and instead rely on their small domestic market of $3 trillion.

6. As a result, UK trade fall drastically (export fell by 11.7%, import fell by 7.5%) - and less jobs are created ---- which backfire on the UK people who thought that by Brexit, they can keep their jobs in UK to themselves.

7. UK general government gross debt was £2,223.0 billion at the end of March 2021, equivalent to 103.7% of gross domestic product (GDP).

8. UK business not doing well as trade fall, GDP fall (by 2.25% in output loss), less jobs created, UK people poorer, Government debt balloon - Brexit (xenophobic, nationalism) - backfire.

How has Truss - mini-budget that won her PMship backfire

(that is why Trusseconomic plan fails - to address the high inflation)

1. Truss want to cut tax for rich people - to try to do a "trickle-down" effect on the Economy - as she thought that with big tax cut, rich people will invest and create jobs for UK.

But rich people will only invest when the market is big, business opportunities are abundant.

After Brexit, business cannot trade easily in EU market and invest easily in EU market - then rich people will just keep their tax cut in their pockets instead of investing and create jobs.

Hence Truss tax cut to pull a "trickle-down" effect fails - and unable to create jobs, pay good salaries to workers - to sustain workers' lives to deal with the high inflation - hence UK market reacted with pessimism - and pounds plummet.

2. Government plan to subsidise energy prices for a few years - that have spike due to Ukraine war.

The problem is, the government debt already run up to $2.2 trillion pounds.

With further tax cut, how will the government able to finance the energy prices for a few years ----- without running into a deep deep public debts?

Failure to ensure financial prudence and maintain a balance fiscal budget - is a sure failure in her economic plan.

3. Brexit - kills the big market access to EU from UK - outcome :- fall in trade, fall in GDP - will result in fall in investment, fall in creating jobs, fall in wealth, fall in government tax revenue.

Hence people referendum (relying on gullible voters) to decide on their fate --- without the knowledge of appreciating how Economics work ----- condemn UK people's economic fate --- by champioining xenophobic, nationalism, closing their economy instead of opening up to foreign talents - thinking that by doing so "locals have all the jobs to themselves" ------ which essentially is "penny wise pound foolish".

4. I hope Singaporeans will not follow the footstep of UK Brexit - and learn from the painful lesson of xenophobic.

Because by closing our doors to foreign talents ---- will hurt us more than save our local jobs and create wealth for our locals.

Being "petty" don't make us "well off".

[0:47 pm, 19/10/2022] +Wai Xin: perhaps we need more success stories from the industries of how skill sets from ITE and Polytechnic can translate to new innovation and inventions that companies are drawing high value from.

Thus encouraging more people to enter workforce early to develop skills, and then upgrade and up skill later at university. the universities are also transforming to cater to more adult learners looking to learn new techniques. their engagements with university can also be two-way sharing their unique industry expertise back to the education system.

[0:51 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: I also want to go workforce early leh

[0:51 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: Than NS how ?

[0:54 pm, 19/10/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

1. Eg. I go to see a GP doctor for a flu. I believe she is a university graduate holding a MBBS.

I pay $40 for the consultation and medicine.

2. My water pipe leak.

I pay $120 for a ITE to replace my water tap and a pipe - to stop the leakage.

I find the price reasonable.

3. Conversely, I pay $300 to see a heart specialist to ensure my heart is in a perfect condition.

I feel relieved and willing to pay the amount. I believe the specialist is higher than a degree graduate.

So it is not whether about "brain work" or "hand work" or "heart work".

It is about the economic outputs and services that consumers are willing to pay.

The bosses are willing to pay a good salaries to the workers that provided it produce the economic outputs and services - that are valued by consumers and the business.

[0:55 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: Are u saying ITE got more pay then doctor ?

At the Singapore Economic Policy Forum on 18 October, Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Lawrence Wong highlighted the issue that Singapore’s economy places too much of a problem on cognitive abilities and does not sufficiently value those engaging in “hands-on and heart work” like technical, service and community care roles.

In particular, DPM Wong was concerned about a growing divergence between the starting pay for Institute of Technical Education (ITE), polytechnic and university graduates, whereby “the median starting salary for a university graduate is almost twice that of an ITE graduate”.

In the international bestseller, Thinking, Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman, the renowned psychologist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, takes us on a groundbreaking tour of the mind and explains the two systems that drive the way we think.

System 1 is fast, intuitive, and emotional; System 2 is slower, more deliberative, and more logical.

The impact of overconfidence on corporate strategies, the difficulties of predicting what will make us happy in the future, the profound effect of cognitive biases on everything from playing the stock market to planning our next vacation―each of these can be understood only by knowing how the two systems shape our judgments and decisions.

[2:39 pm, 19/10/2022] +Ken: The point is do it better, cheaper or easier.

The current efforts are still insufficient. More radical approach is required to implement attractive apprenticeship scheme for “hands-on” works with government tax incentive/ grants/ co-payment for employers.

Do not rule out radical scheme such as scholarship with bonds/ lump sum payment gratuity to young people who sign up for these apprenticeship scheme and complete their bond service period.

[3:30 pm, 19/10/2022] +Tan Kay Eng: Please do not generalised as xenophobic which most of us here are not. I guess most ppl here wanted it to be well managed.

Yes, the key is not xenophobia but well managed.

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: There is a balance… if everyone go fast who check? Hence older also sometimes important. To act as a check and ask more questions.

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: If you can convince the old and lazy people to take up your ideas. You have done enough to prove your point

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: Book Review:

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: The point is do it better, cheaper or easier.

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: Choose a lazy person to do a hard job. Because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it.

Bill Gates

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: I try my best to automate most process in the company. At decent ROI when done one good enough.. the rest will follow

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: Just tackle one by one slowly… never ending improvement game

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: If not I no job Liao 😂

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: Important is getting to same alignment as stakeholder then I can push my agenda

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: But also need time to think… being able to have some free time helps with the thought processes

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: I am just curious: 30 yrs ago we have population about 3 mil, we do not need so many foreign work force, we have enough National service personnel. Today we have close to 6 mil population, we do not have enough NS personnel, we need more FW🤔🤔. We keep saying we want to be the Swiss in Asia, however, as far as I know, Swiss will not hire FW if their ppl is not employed. So much so that most of their ppl can take break for months/years and not afraid of NO JOB after break (Please correct me if I am wrong)

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: Moravec's paradox… something easy for human not always easy for computers.

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: As the economy increase in complexity, more roles need to be filled. High and low end.

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: No such thing as a full higher workforce.

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: We never fully copy any system. There is always a SG twist to it. So cannot take apple to apple. When we are a different kind of Swiss

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: Singapore existence is already one of the wonder in economy sense.

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: Not so easy to replicate

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: if they are all talent thn sg would have been strong by now

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: You can only be productive till a certain level… after that is next level of game. Which only developed nations can do. Which is technology and synergetic coupling of technology and high skilled workers.

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: When we have high level of highly educated workforce.

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: 1. Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and many ASEAN countries have taken our roles as low wage base manufacturing.

Many have tried to build their seaports.

2. If we still stick to the old economy - we become impoverished.

3. Now global climate threaten to flood our lands, agri-food is in short supply, and many other issues that threaten our very economic existence - spur us to upgrade our economy into many new high value added economic sectors so that we can continue to survive and thrive.

4. Eg. We do r&d in high tech, IT, AI, etc, in biotechnology, in medical tech, in sustainable high-tech food and agriculture, upgrade our ports into high tech ports and airports, immerse in digital economy, r&d in defence tech building our stealth unmanned frigates…

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: I think you need to define what is talent ?

What so great about the young and the future generations?

Is not about succession nor passing that baton to the next able hands?

Is fountain of youth, the mid-age crises and ageing gracefully and meaningfully the three stations of unavoidable life interchange?

Arguably, all three interchange of life are vital in creating the meaning of life! Is not about waking up and make sure you marked your attendance in the school or at work or WFM locking to that screen?

Only meaningful achievements will last a longer time than chasing that As' and going on into that many famous places of learning and/ or workplace!

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: Our people don’t even treat them with respect be it work as them

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: Blue for sure is more labour intensive

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: 💬 What are your views on the current efforts to uplift lower-wage workers? What more can be done for a mindset shift by employers and society, in recognizing those engaging in "hands-on and heart work" ?

The current efforts are still insufficient. More radical approach is required to implement attractive apprenticeship scheme for “hands-on” works with government tax incentive/ grants/ co-payment for employers.

Do not rule out radical scheme such as scholarship with bonds/ lump sum payment gratuity to young people who sign up for these apprenticeship scheme and complete their bond service period.

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: Blue, white or brown, does it matters or it does?

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: How easy to get in, depends on how urgent we need the talent.

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: Like nursing easy to get in, but easier to study? Not really..

[3:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: but later some team hire 1 citizen , 1new citizen , 2pr and 2 EP how ?

[3:45 pm, 19/10/2022] +Ken: Already building the Institute to study 😅 I believe I saw it already… I might be wrong

I am not familiar with this part of the science

[3:49 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: There's a lot going on behind the scenes

[3:53 pm, 19/10/2022] +Tan Kay Eng: Although I am not a science, i am not too worry about the technical safety, I am more concern on terrorisms, sabotage .😱😓

"What a big topic, Technique or Technical?"

Pay?

Is starting pay and thereafter a divider of one's future earnings vs the others?

From your First job and the starting salary you making to the next job that offers you higher salary. How do we PULL closer 'pay to pay' and industry to industry?

Technique or Technical?

Educational level is one starting point in deciding on pay for this job and the next and so on. Fact ,graduates will command the highest starting salaries than a non-grads. In each Uni-graduate, the knowledge and skills learned further differentiates from a Social Studies grad to a Medical grad or an Engr grad and so on the list of starting salary! [4:03 pm, 19/10/2022] +Ken: Legit scared

[4:12 pm, 19/10/2022] +Tan Kay Eng: for sure i move out, retire somewhere 🤭🤭🫣🫣

[4:12 pm, 19/10/2022] +Smiley face: Hi Ken, one bingo, thanks.

If a young person for whatsoever reasons decided to migrate to elsewhere? What's the failure and the success at the receiving end of that landed country this young one?

What's going to happen to this young person parents? Come Home once a while or coming back to home again or coming back for sad purposes?

It takes a big big village and painful efforts in bringing up our young ones

Isn't it true that our youth are the deciders of tomorrow?

[4:13 pm, 19/10/2022] +Smiley face: Hi Kay Eng,  you are one good responsible person. Thank you!

[4:16 pm, 19/10/2022] +Tan Kay Eng: I hope it will not reach a point that I have to make this decision. I love this country, born here, study here, work here, married here and hope to die here too

[4:17 pm, 19/10/2022] +Ken: Migrate is not an easy task, the consideration not for one generation but the future as well…

Going out there is a high chance that we might start from zero. To be frank do thought of it. Singapore is relatively fragile.

My mum is from Malaysia, she so that I can have a better future. If the future is uncertain for my kids. Of course I won’t think twice about moving. Family first.

For now is the best options for family. Hence, I am here. I can be Singaporean anywhere.

But safety is a key concern.

[4:17 pm, 19/10/2022] +Ken: She moved “

[4:34 pm, 19/10/2022] +Noraini: 'Talent' is perhaps the extra niche.

I work in a Japanese company.  Been here very  long time.  I don't speak Japanese.

We have 2 Jap EP.

1 PR (Jap married to Singaporean)

1 Singaporean who went oversea to study & learn Japanese

I am lucky

[4:37 pm, 19/10/2022] +Ken: Should pick up… after 10 years working with Japanese I decide to pick up as well

[4:38 pm, 19/10/2022] +Ken: I assume from your name is Malay then will be a bit tough 😅 for Chinese relatively easier due to the similarities in the language

[4:39 pm, 19/10/2022] +Ken: People that can speak Japanese gets promoted faster as they can communicate direct with our stakeholders in japan and majority of key client are Japanese.

[5:09 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: PWM will over time encompass a wide sector of our low wage industry workers

[5:16 pm, 19/10/2022] +jimmy chew: All depends on parents. I don't pressure my kid and he can choose what he wants. It's not easy to be like that. I got scolded by my nephew who wants to pay for my son's tuition so that he won't be disadvantage. He was upset when I told him let my son struggle

[5:18 pm, 19/10/2022] +jimmy chew: I met a foreign talent sec 2 girl. I Asked her what she wants be, she replied my parents wants me to be a doctor. It's a universal problem

[5:18 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: Your nephew is wrong and you are right! Also, parents must not impose the career choice for their children nor spoon feed them financially!

[5:18 pm, 19/10/2022] +jimmy chew: Like china too many graduates. Now they're encouraging trade skills because not every one can be manager

[5:19 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: I believe our government is well aware.

[5:20 pm, 19/10/2022] +jimmy chew: Yeah but to sell that to the citizens that your kid don't need to strive to Uni is a downer

[5:20 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: Strive on your own steam and shine.

[5:21 pm, 19/10/2022] +jimmy chew: Maybe government needs to message that all jobs contribute to the economy

[5:25 pm, 19/10/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

1. To summarise, the intent of today's topic - is to achieve 2 social objectives and goals :-

a. To tackle Income inequality - between the University graduates, Polytechnic graduates and ITE graduates.

b. To address social inequality - between the University graduates, Polytechnic graduates and ITE graduates.

2. I feel that this is a necessary step to ensure :-

a. Social and Economic inclusiveness

b. Social stability and address social grievances

b. Stable and long term governance.

3. However, I will like to highlight that while we try to address and take actions to be socially inclusive - we need to keep the economic principle and market principle in focus.

a. Specifically, the pay in which bossess are willing to pay the diploma holders and ITE graduates to commensurate with University graduates as well as the monies that consumers are willing to pay ---- is very much determine by the economic output and services produce by the diploma graduates and the ITE graduates.

We can't force business or consumers to pay more - just to achieve the social objectives - but with no economic output or services to "hand works" or "heart work" that can match the "brain work" produce by University graduates ---- as this will not be in compliance to the economic principles and free market principles.

Our Economy will become uncompetitive the moment we do that.

Planned Economy - is the good hallmark - that skew the market inefficiently to achieve its lofty objective of common prosperity - and thus doom to fail. Planned Economy hence need to transform to embrace the Market Economy to succeed.

4. Then how should we do to ensure we do not fall into the pitfall of planned economy, embrace market economy - and yet able to achieve the social objectives - of income equality and social equality among the Uni, Poly and ITE graduates?

[5:25 pm, 19/10/2022] +Ken: Opportunity.. if you can wait till tomorrow is not urgent..

[5:26 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: I think i say in front cos cheap labour

[5:27 pm, 19/10/2022] +jimmy chew: And soft skills graduates. Short of IT and Engineers

[5:27 pm, 19/10/2022] +Ken: Jurong island upgrade a toilet is 10k 🤣🤣 most don’t want to do cause troublesome… easier to do outside of island

[5:27 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: plus ppl study hald plus uni came sg to find whuite collar jobs

[5:27 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: half plus six

[5:27 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: Sorry i dont agree

My daughter herself don't want to get scolded by teachers

She wants to do all her work..

So its not in our hands

It depends on child

A sincere child might feel pressure despite parents won't stress

And No point i argue here

As Many people think the same

And the system never changes!

[5:28 pm, 19/10/2022] +Ken: And harder to job hop…

[5:28 pm, 19/10/2022] +jimmy chew: You can't blame them they can't find job in their own country

[5:28 pm, 19/10/2022] +Tan Kay Eng: 10 yrs ago i paid $200 for thisjob. It took him 10 mins to fix.🤭🫣. 3mths ago, I get a guy to a casing of 3 fibre optic wire with socket for my internet (about 5 metres), he charged me$550, about 1.5 hour job

[5:28 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: I admire your daughters determination

[5:29 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: And at home we parents never help ..unable to help

So she herself requested for tuition when she feels she is unable to cope up (when she unable to do homework herself, she needs help)

Some parent have ability and time to teach some don't have

[5:31 pm, 19/10/2022] +jimmy chew: Yeah. If got a friend hated school because the teacher can't answer her questions and find her an irritant. She went overseas after O levels and excel. When asked she replied that the teachers answered all her questions. Anyway these are anecdotal

[5:32 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: this remind me of my C math  teacher in SRJC 2003  he any how teach one . U ask him question he say you should know by now.

[5:32 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: sorry i mean lecture

[5:33 pm, 19/10/2022] +jimmy chew: 🤣 same here in Pre U too

[5:34 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: Yes she is good

I just want her to be happy what ever she does

I always told her

Just do want makes you happy.

I want her to study what ever she wants

(But funny thing is

She can't study what ever she wants . its all depends on grades

What the school will choose for her)

That's the reality

[5:36 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: My friend child wanted to study A math

She couldn't because she got low maths score..

Despite she tried to talk to the teachers she wants to try and work hard...

She couldn't able to get

This is the reality

Funny thing is that girl missed one Mid term assessment..so got low score in overall year end Sec2 exam

So she can't study A maths

[5:37 pm, 19/10/2022] +jimmy chew: Maybe the government can prepare graduates for the coming requirements. My observation that LIke in the 70s the country is skewed towards engineering and social sciences was not strongly encouraged (my assumption)

[5:37 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: it not important u no need A math to do delivery  :D

[5:37 pm, 19/10/2022] +KL: or C math or F math

[5:38 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: Sorry my bad English

My daughter knows that girl

Now my girl do few online Career choices quizes

N she wants to study Psychology

N she herself googled

Whats needed

Now She understand that she needs to take maths n science to be major in psychology

Do get to there

She needs Good Sec1 n Sec2 scores in maths n sci

If not she won't able to do what she wants to

[5:39 pm, 19/10/2022] +jimmy chew: I met a manager who created a mathematical formula of the problem we're facing. It was an eye opener for me to see how brilliant she was beside her other good traits

[5:40 pm, 19/10/2022] +Suma pamu: So plz don't tell me that the pressure is not there

Its about the child

Some children due to some influence wants to become this or that ..

But we stopping them before even JC based on Marks

[5:42 pm, 19/10/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

1. University graduates economic output and services are very clear and tangible :-

a. R&D in AI, IT, hi-tech sustainable food, medical, bio-tech

b. STEM - science, techology, engineering, math - produce many tangible products and services - in various aspects of economic sectors\

c. Finance, accounting, fintech, blockchain, mobile apps for e-commerce

etc etc etc.

These are economic output and services that are worth thousands, millions, billions --- in which bossess are willing to pay a good salaries to the University graduates.

2. Polytechnic graduates --- are similarly trained in STEM and business -- that are quite closely related to University graduates with more hands-on skillsets.

I am not too worried about Polytechnic graduates - because the vast majority after a few years of work move on to take their University degrees through local Universities, SIT and overseas Uni.

Their salaries quickly catch up to match the University graduates.

3. ITE graduates are more hands-on with less academic groundings - and I feel that this group will require more attention.

a. Firstly, ITE academic curriculum must work with the industrial sectors - to identify what are the economic output and services that are badly needed and are willing to pay for "hand works" and "heart works".

The eg I post :-

i. Fixing tap, leak pipes, pumbling works - are badly needed - and consumers and boss are willing to pay good salaries to ITE graduates to do such jobs.

ii. Electricians is also another areas.

iii. Technicians

iv. Healthcare assistants

v. Bakers and Master chef

etc

b. The moment we positively identified the economic output and services we want - whereby business and consumers are willing to pay --- equivalent to the Uni graduates pay --- then ITE academic curriculum, business, bosses, unions will have to carve out a progressive career pathways - for ITE graduates to do well and excel ---- and the moment they graduates can take on these well-paid jobs.

c. Of course ITE graduates also have the academic pathway to do their diploma and degree if they so wishes.

This will be the best way to achieve the 2 social objectives of tackling income inequality and social status inequality --- while religiously observing the Economic fundamental and market principles ---- without failling into the pitfall of "Planned Economy" that are not well received by the Economy, businessess and the Consumers.

[5:55 pm, 19/10/2022] +Smiley face: everyone needs that bowl of rice on the table (每个人都需要餐桌上的那碗米饭)?

So how to 'equalise' things?

Whether you are locals or from abroad, all are looking for that bowl to survive? Exception is some get it easy, some get with sweat and blood and a few gets alot?

Some countries paid their tradesmen by the hours and waitering ($22/hr?) too! Lawyers charged by the hours and architect earns from % of a project.

How to determine/allocate wages from basic work to various common works? Outdoor or indoor work?

Then comes competitive edge of this nation versus the next one and thereafter!

Quality of work done is one key consideration for productivity. Lastly, if workers are unhappy, how to increase that productivity and what's going to happen to competitive?

This homerun is hard to pitch...?

[5:59 pm, 19/10/2022] +jimmy chew: I shared to a friend that we're very generous when the foreign talent came to Singapore until they look care of their own. Now that there's less foreigners we Will have equality. His reply shocked me "now everyone has enough, there will be cracks when there's not enough!"

[6:02 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: Yes

[6:10 pm, 19/10/2022] +REACH: 📢 Topic📢

What more can be done for a mindset shift by employers and society, in recogn…

[6:10 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: Very true

[6:13 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/2023-school-year-to-begin-from-jan-3-with-staggered-starts-for-primary-schools-kindergartens

[6:24 pm, 19/10/2022] +Maverick: I wonder if we've looked at other countries that might have achieved this better? Where 'blue collared' jobs are valued? For eg in Japan, I see the workers take pride in everything they do - whether they are fixing the electricity lines outside, or doing road works. I'm not sure how much they are paid but at least they are doing the jobs with pride and I don't get a sense that they are looked down on. I think some of the transformation must start there - valuing these jobs more than how we Singaporeans value them now, and then, are we willing to pay more to reflect that value. 🤔

[6:27 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: There shame in some menial jobs being done by singaporeans

[6:27 pm, 19/10/2022] +Maverick: yes. i think for a start, we should address that.

[6:28 pm, 19/10/2022] +Rama: Wages and respect for an honest living!

[6:38 pm, 19/10/2022] +Smiley face: 19 October, 2022

"What if life and human will never be equal?"

Perhaps those many low wage workers to receive 'now and then' monetary helps? Maybe it's already happening for a long time? These many small helpings from affordable rental flats to help from MSF and NGOs.

So the next time, look around and count how many rentals HDB blocks there are in each vicinity, multiply by 500 people per block to see the totality of helps and helpings to do.

Often enough, the opposite (opposite side of the bench) would say this and that and more should be done and so on. Talking is the cheapest trade while actions and executing plans are different matter!

Yes, SINGAPORE has grown and Singaporeans are relatively well educated, better lifes and confidently to say that…

"The Race of this Century"

"It doesn't matter if you are not winning today or the next race, preeminently, you must (stamina) continue this race...?"

- - anonymous

Draw that line:

Crossing over two generational of human lineages, Asia again is at its crossroads of profound distinction or eminently risks of destruction?

Cutting a slice of the Asian's history, set the starting line of economics (socials & politics) developments from 1975 to 2025. Who were the 'decisive players' then and who will be the 'surprised winners' in this fast finishing first 100m dash into 2025 and onto 2050?

And what about a slice of the Americana's race too, these two big contingents ( 'A' teams) in sync or thus?

Who are the known mighties long leggers of the two, their tactics and the race strategies?

What's the social mobilities, economics policies & pitfalls and insights of this finishing line?

Which social/economics/political system(s) is working better than the others?

What's the implications in 'mixing' two teams and selectively choosing and remaking a new team of the 'cream le crop' long leggers to run the race of this Century?

Coming soon (future chats)!

 - - in the making - -

         Thank you!
