[10:00 am, 26/01/2022] +REACH: πŸ“’ Topic πŸ“’

As Singapore tackles the Omicron wave, three areas loom large in the Health Ministry's assessment of the situation, said Health Minister Ong Ye Kung, who was speaking at the opening of the new Outram Community Hospital on Monday (Jan 24). These are: the country's intensive care unit (ICU) capacity, hospitalisation rates, and the impact of the highly infectious variant on the country's manpower resources.

πŸ’¬ What are your views on the recent rise in community cases? How can Singapore better cope with rising case totals and ease the strain on our healthcare system and society?

A total of 509 people are now hospitalised with Covid-19, of whom 35 require oxygen support and 10 are in the intensive care unit. That is an increase of 31 more people warded in hospitals compared with Monday (Jan 24). There are also three more people requiring oxygen support, although the number of people in the ICU has fallen by one. There were two Covid-19 deaths reported on Tuesday (Jan 25).

On hospitalisation, Mr Ong reiterated that about 1.3 per cent of Omicron cases are hospitalised, with 0.3 per cent requiring oxygen supplementation. Singapore reported 5,578 new community coronavirus cases on Tuesday (25 Jan).

The authorities have previously warned that many people coming down with the variant at the same time could lead to service disruptions "from time to time", as people call in sick. Mr Ong said he is most worried about this, noting that Singapore has changed its protocols so people can now come out of isolation after seven days, rather than 10 days - or even earlier if their conditions allow for it.

Children below the age of 12 are also starting to make up the majority of Covid-19 cases that are admitted to hospitals, said Singapore's director of medical services Kenneth Mak on Friday (Jan 21). More children with Omicron infections are being admitted to hospitals for treatment, but do not require long stays or intensive care. The children who need oxygen treatment or ICU care range from less than one year-old to nine, all of whom were unvaccinated. Under the national vaccination programme, three out of four of them would have been eligible for vaccination, Associate Professor Mak said at a virtual press conference.

[10:56 am, 26/01/2022] +REACH: Dear Contributors

We’d love to hear more from you😊

We have had good feedback and hope that we can keep the discussion robust and active!

[10:58 am, 26/01/2022] +Caleb: And also make sure home is not a mosquito breeding ground.

[10:58 am, 26/01/2022] +Caleb: And report any cases if discovered outside of home has mosquito breeding ground.

[11:55 am, 26/01/2022] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

5,996 new COVID-19 cases, 2 deaths reported in Singapore.

The number of COVID-19 cases reported  in Singapore on Tuesday is nearly twice the previous day's.

100% jump in infection.

Omicron could affect S’pore workforce: Lawrence W…: https://youtu.be/aNqOsFKCfA0

[0:00 pm, 26/01/2022] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

1. High rate of absenteeism is expected from workforce and from school.

Due to more people catching virus - and may cripple business operations, school operations.

2. If hospital staff are infected enmass - may also affect hospital operations.

[0:01 pm, 26/01/2022] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Very sharp U-shape upturn in infection cases.

[0:02 pm, 26/01/2022] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Also noticed a U-shape return of hospitalisation.

[0:04 pm, 26/01/2022] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

2 fatality yesterday.

[0:05 pm, 26/01/2022] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

The onslaught of Omicron wave is coming.

Expecting this sharp U-shape upturn will go on for another 2 weeks.

[0:13 pm, 26/01/2022] +Timothy Low: Is it true that even though one continues to be tested positive for ART he or she can still come back to school/workplace after self isolating for 7 days?

[0:14 pm, 26/01/2022] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

1. Suggest business continuity plan for individual business to be activated - WFH and WFO.

2. School continuity plan required in case large clusters form in school.

3. Ramp up ART test for working staff.

4. Ramp up vaccination effort for unvaccinated, partially vaccinated and booster shots.

[0:21 pm, 26/01/2022] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

5. Yesterday, see a large crowd of parents bringing children to Vaccination centre to get their jab.

Very encouraging sign.

[0:32 pm, 26/01/2022] +Anthony: I was surprised allowed Government set 50%workforce return to office to work instead of WFH

25% workforce return should be the maximum ,Plus the Omicron Variant easily get infection from everyone

Government should carefully relook again the plan of total opening in society means high number of infection will remain for weeks

Even everyone have 2 or 3 Jab of vaccination doesn't means all of us are safe

Government should lay back rather then a speedy opening from WFH return to office

A big Mistake decision done MORE & GOVERNMENT

[0:32 pm, 26/01/2022] +Caleb: https://www.moh.gov.sg/news-highlights/details/social-responsibility-key-to-living-with-covid-19/

[1:13 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: Symptoms from catching Omicron is very very mild esp. for fully vaxxed and no underlying/pre-existing illness.

Data so far seems to suggest Omicron is crowding out other variants.

Vax + immunity gained from encountering virus is stronger than just vax alone.

As long as hospital/ICU capacity is sufficient, we should be fine. We can’t rely on lockdowns and restrictions forever.

F&B and retail biz need people to come back. We need to move towards normalization. The Vax was the first step. Omicron with its mild symptoms and (so far) no signs of long-Covid, may just be the other key to help us achieve herd immunity and endemic.

[1:42 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: With all the recent changes due to Omicron, I m a little lost...  And concerned  ... Ppl ard me catching CoVid  ...

1. Is ART test accurate? Or to eat extent?

2. Does it take more than 48h to detect Omicron?

Meaning test 2x, 2 consecutive tests - negative.

Third day test (plus onslaught of fever etc),  then Positive.

3. Meanwhile, patient unknowingly goes out in the 1st 2 days (cos result negative) ... Is this acceptable?

4. Third day result positive,  stay at hm.

Nd to notify MOH?

Need to consult doctor or not?

Or just take Panadol & treat like common flu??

Actual cases in point ..

Example #1

Parent got CoVid fr workplace.

ART Tested negative on 1st day.  No symptoms.

PCR tested subsequently Positive.

Has 2 kids at hm : 17yo (vax),  11yr (UnVax)

5 days later -

Both siblings got Covid

In btn,  cousin popped over,  knowing the parent has CoVid...

(how stupid can she be...  ?)  I didn't bother asking after tt..

Anyway, family didn't see doctor.  Just sat it out cos mild symptoms??

Is this how it's supposed to be?  πŸ˜³

Qn:  when is it "safe" for ppl to visit this πŸ‘†πŸ» household again?

My GP advises me to wait 14 days.

[1:46 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: Example #2

Parent has lunch w fren. They share drink together.

(again,  how stupid r these ppl?)

Fren got CoVid.

Parent tested w ART for 2 days - negative.

2 kids : 7yo & 10yr

Both Un-Vax

Parent does Not believe in getting Vax....

That was just ytd.

I hv yet to flw up on the sitn.

My gut tells me it may get bad.

[1:47 pm, 26/01/2022] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ: https://www.channelnewsasia.com/commentary/singapore-covid-19-pandemic-omicron-variant-2455906

An Omicron spike in Singapore will be fast and furious.

But paying attention to the unvaccinated, elderly and those with pre-existing conditions can help us avoid straining the healthcare system, says SingHealth Duke-NUS Global Health Institute’s Dr Paul Pronyk.

[1:48 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: So, wat is the protocol to follow?

I mean,  one tests negative for 2 days & continues to go out.

Spreading to others unknowingly.

Another allows her kids to go for tuition (wher I teach)  ... Even when she has news tt her fren tested positive but she tested negative herself for 1st 2 days...

For precaution's sake,  shd she not hv kept the kids at hm?

[1:49 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: Worse,  in example 1, when the parent tested positive,

the sch told her tt her kid had to go to sch to get tested...

Hello...  Duh...?

I dun see the logic of having the child leave hm just to go to sch to get tested...

Wud he not,  also,  unknowingly spread the virus???

[1:50 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: With such idiots walking ard,  is it any wonder why our daily infection rate didn't go higher...  ???? 😳😑

[1:53 pm, 26/01/2022] +Valli: Very unsure of the protocol either

Eg: Parent tested positive, the others in the family tested negative for now and are going about with the normal routine

[1:54 pm, 26/01/2022] +Anthony: Frankly speaking, The protocol now it stand means Sooner or Later everyone will catch by the Variant

Secondly ,It was obvious people had variant Wil stIl walking around as long they can manage by few Panadol to take care of their health

After all ,The objective sooner or later everyone turn by turn Wil have Covid 19

[1:54 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: Exactly...

Seems like they only develop symptoms fr day 3 onwards or sth.

[1:54 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: 🀦🏼‍♀️🀦🏼‍♀️🀦🏼‍♀️🀦🏼‍♀️🀦🏼‍♀️🀦🏼‍♀️🀦🏼‍♀️

[1:56 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: So, if one catches it,  one wl become Super-Immune,

is it?

Danny - u wl love πŸ‘†πŸ» this!  <joke>

[1:57 pm, 26/01/2022] +Anthony: Unless ,our employer can afford daliy ART test for workers🀣🀣

[1:57 pm, 26/01/2022] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Better to get 3 jabs vaccination for Super immunity.

Don't bank on getting infected.

Trust the vaccines but not the virus no matter how mild.

[1:57 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: And one is alredi vax (w at least 2 doses)

[1:57 pm, 26/01/2022] +Valli: Yes

I even observe a man coughing, removing his mask & spitting on the floor before boarding the bus.

🀦🏽‍♀️

[1:58 pm, 26/01/2022] +Rama: Consider strengthening Current legislation for non compliance! A lot is at stake!

[1:58 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: 😱

[1:58 pm, 26/01/2022] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Better to get the 3rd dose.

[1:59 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: Noted with thanks,  Danny!

[2:00 pm, 26/01/2022] +Anthony: Our minister said that ,no  silver bullet too

[2:00 pm, 26/01/2022] +Anthony: ι˜²δΈθƒœι˜²

[2:01 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: Pls make ART test kits even cheaper  ...

Like to ard $1 / $2 per test.

Conscientious ppl can then test daily if they wan to.

[2:01 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: Haiz....

[2:04 pm, 26/01/2022] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

1. Virus infect our body to create havoc - multi-organs damage - blood, lungs, brain, heart, kidneys, nerve system etc. - no matter how mild.

2. Vaccines help our body, immune system, bone marrow - to produce anti-bodies, B-cell, T-cell to attack the covid in whatever variants.

Hence trust the 3 jabs vaccination for Super immunity - and not the virus.

Virus harm you.

Vaccines protect you.

[2:05 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: Example #3

Kid goes bk to India w family for long holiday recently.

Kena CoVid.

I've bn told he'll be re joining the class after CNY.

Qn :

Again,  Wat is the timeframe for it to be considered "safe"  to be in society again?

My knowledge of these things is not so good.

Can MOH Pls advise.

U cut the recovery period down fr 10 days to 7 days.

So,  does tt mean the infected person can re join society after 7 days &

does not hv any trace of the virus on them any more?

MOH pls advise.

[2:10 pm, 26/01/2022] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Business should make time for their staff and strongly encourage them to take their booster and not wait - because too busy with work.

Overhead young workers keep pushing back their booster - because too busy at work - cannot find time to get their booster or afraid need to rest at home if side effects kick in.

Boss and HR should encourage their staff to get booster so that they won't get infected by Omicron.

Else if infected - will affect business operations more.

[2:49 pm, 26/01/2022] +Anthony: As my personal experience would not understand their employee after vaccinated post-condition especially when I had the 1 & 2 Jab my employer asked me go back work next day

However my arm having swelling turn into red stIl employer asked me continue he said it was nothing no big deal

I urge MOH to given those vaccinated first 3days leave as MC

Some employer really awful & not understand the employee post vaccinated condition

In this area ,MOH & Government could alot more

[2:50 pm, 26/01/2022] +Rama: Agree

[2:56 pm, 26/01/2022] +Elena Woo: +1

[2:57 pm, 26/01/2022] +Vivian: +1 my office already got a few confirm cases and their family also got confirm cases... In no time, the rest of us will contact soon.

[2:59 pm, 26/01/2022] +Vivian: Nobody will care about our health... We can only take care of our own health. See doc if unwell. Even if slightly unwell after jabs. Take care!

[2:59 pm, 26/01/2022] +Vivian: Free to those low income...

[3:29 pm, 26/01/2022] +Rama: Means testing needed to prevent abuse

[3:29 pm, 26/01/2022] +Rama: Agree

[3:30 pm, 26/01/2022] +Rama: Will it be adjusted backwards!?

[3:41 pm, 26/01/2022] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Booster provide immediate protection upon jab.

No need to wait for 14 days to take effect.

Government should encourage all business whose staff are due for 3 jab booster to give time off to jab and not delay until their project over.

The current steep upsurge in Omicron warrant such drastic immediate action.

[3:55 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: RE-POSTING comments from 21 JAN 22

Actually having experienced first hand an entire household coming down with CV19, my take is that the ART test kit and process is NOT a suitable tool for preventing spread. In fact, it may be the cause. Let me explain why.

When the member in my household started to exhibit flu-like symptoms, the person immediately did an ART test. It turned out NEGATIVE. The test was repeated the (within) every 24hr period (as prescribed). Although the symptoms escalated within the first 48hrs, the first 2 tests were NEGATIVE.

It was only on the 3rd day that the ART registered POSITIVE,

So, the problem with this is:

- Quite obviously, the person was already infectious when symptoms first presented, but the ART was still NEGATIVE during the initial 48 hrs. We know this because every member within my household, gradually - over the next few days - got infected despite our best efforts to isolate and segregate the moment the first POSITIVE ART test was registered.

The chronology was similar for all of us - mild symptoms (scratchy throat, mild fever, slight dry cough) started presenting within 48hr after last contact with confirmed case... BUT ART was negative for next 48-72hrs. Of course by now, we are aware that presenting mild flu-like symptoms + negative ART + last contact with confirmed case within 48hr period = most likely will test ART +ve within next 48hrs + already infectious and spreading the virus. So, from the 2nd member onwards, we started to isolate/segregate further.

So, the problem with the current protocol of "Negative ART result is good for 24hrs" is clearly giving everyone a false sense of security/safety which in fact may be the cause of a sudden wave of infections because people who are infections but ART -ve are unknowingly spreading the virus by being out and about (which the protocol allows).

[4:04 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: Tq.

Precisely my point exactly,  even tho it happened to ppl ard me.

Tks for the cfm.

MOH,  pls take note.  πŸ‘†πŸ»

Ppl shd be made aware of such sense of false security.

Ppl shd immediately self isolate for 48-72 h even tho they test negative & not 'suka suka', anyhow,  heck care,  still go out to work , shop or socialise!

Tt shd be part of the protocol.  πŸ˜³

[4:05 pm, 26/01/2022] +Rama: Agree

[4:06 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: G/MOH can set Protocols - which are general guidelines, but that is only the bare minimum imo.

From the very beginning, it has been highlighted/emphasised repeatedly, that to defeat CV19, it is dependent on society/everyone's cooperation. It requires everyone to exercise some common sense and consideration to others (above and beyond following protocols).

ie. if you are are feeling unwell, err on the side of caution, and avoid contact with others if you care about not infecting others.

Unfortunately, there are many people who can't care less about others. They will hide behind "protocols" as long as it is more convenient for them. And these are also the same people, who would challenge the G/MOH when the rules do not suit them. Such is the society we live in.

[4:10 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: Also true.

[4:11 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: I encountered another kiasu parent who is the classmate of a household member of mine.

The parent knowingly sent her CV+ child to class because she did not want her child to miss the year-end exam...but with specific instructions for her child to report sick at the school admin office after completing the exam paper ... AND .. keeping mum the whole time. The kids are U12 and all unvaxxed at the tims.

It was only discovered when her own kid told her close friend and the friend blabbered to others that it became known to the rest. And throughout, when other parents asked/queried about this in the parents group chat, this parent (of the CV+ child) kept quiet throughout. Lots of such people around unfortunately.

[4:13 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: The parent hid behind the protocol of only having to report (to the school about it) if CV+ .. but of course, she circumvented that by NOT DOING THE TEST IN THE FIRST PLACE

[4:13 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: 😱

[4:16 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: Lets put it this way... looking at the crowds outside - shopping malls, cars on the roads, lines forming outside F&B outlets etc etc ... do you believe that EVERYONE of those people are CV Negative?  That not even 1 of them is actually CV+ and (knowingly or otherwise) flouting the self isolation requirement?

[4:22 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: It's scary,  isn't it?

[4:26 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: Having said that .. and if you noticed my comments in this forum on the CV19 situation so far, I hope you might have noticed that it has also evolved.

During Alpha variant period when we had no vaccines available and very little knowledge about the virus, I was 200% cautious.

By the time Delta came along, and vaccines were available, but vax rate was still relatively low in SG, I was still cautious and prefer to err on the side of caution.

Now, with better understanding of the virus, 90% of population vaxxed and Omicron seemingly crowding out other variants and causing very mild symptoms, I am less worried. I think the G/MOH's strategy of allowing Omicron to spread so that we can gain hybrid immunity (which is stronger than just vax), while keeping an eye on hospital/ICU capacity and disruptions to key biz/functions from absenteeism, is the right stratgey.

We can't hide forever. And vax alone is insufficient.

The purpose of the vax is to give us a minimum level of protection so that we can fight the infection - and build direct immunity - when the time comes. Seeing that Omicron is causing very mild symptoms and even lower hospitalisations/ICU cases, I think it is the right time to loosen up restrictions, let the younger/healthy and vaxxed encounter the virus and build the required herd immunity.

[4:30 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: As long as (on the medical front) hospital/ICU capacity is sufficient, and (on the business front) absenteeism from CV-infections is not overly disruptive, I think we are fine. Keep a closer eye out, and protect the older/vulnerable ones amongst us.

[4:31 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: You could have gone to the GP and asked for MC. Since it is CV related, the expenses are all covered by G/MOH.

[4:35 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: Don't panic.

If you are fully vaxxed, <65yo, no underlying medical condition, Omicron is going to be very mild if you do eventually catch it. Fom my experience and observations of family and friends who caught Omicron recently, the recovery is pretty fast as well. After first 2-3 days, most are already symptom-free.

After full recovery, the hybrid immunity gained, is stronger than that gained from vax alone.

[4:36 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: Of course, be more careful if there are old folks/people with underlying medical conditions at home. Isolating, wearing masks properly and washing hands all help to limit the spread.

[4:38 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: Apparently you are no longer infectious after 7 days EVEN IF ART IS STILL POSITIVE.

[4:39 pm, 26/01/2022] +RH: Noted with thanks.

[4:40 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: Most will test ART negative by day 4 or 5 IF YOU SELF ISOLATE STRICTLY and do not mingle with others who have recently tested positive ie. still shedding virus/infectious during the first few days

[4:43 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: The first family member in my household who tested CV+, finally tested ART negative on day 9. This is probably because the rest of us got infected a few days apart and started to isolate within our house - instead of isolating individually within our own rooms. So the overlapping infectious period probably extended the CV+ period for that first household member.

[4:47 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: Our helper took her booster jab the same week the first of our household member tested CV+.

She stayed -CV NEGATIVE throughout- even though she continued with her daily duties of keeping house and helping with chores. She was a wearing mask while going about her chores and washed her hands regularly.

[4:51 pm, 26/01/2022] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Booster will protect us.

Even if Omicron comes - whether infected or not - our body will be in a better shape.

[4:52 pm, 26/01/2022] +Valli: We have to treat it like the flu, each & everyone of us sooner or later will get the virus & go about our daily life as usual.

[5:10 pm, 26/01/2022] +Elena Woo: But employers incl g still wan ppl to WIO.

[5:12 pm, 26/01/2022] +Elena Woo: Employers incl G mandate that employees must WIO at least 2 or 3 days. Like said ART tests show negative. So spread in office is alr cfm.

[5:13 pm, 26/01/2022] +Elena Woo: But employers not happy

[5:14 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: I don't think G/MOH mandate that employees MUST WIO. That is for the Employers to decide.

G/MOH only relaxed WIO proportion to 50%.

Quite sure G/MOH can't care less where you/anyone is working from (or not) πŸ˜‚

[5:15 pm, 26/01/2022] +Elena Woo: I mean G as employers themselves mandate staff must WIO 2 to 3 times a week.

[5:15 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: Then that is something that Employee has to take up with Employer.

[5:15 pm, 26/01/2022] +Elena Woo: But this is not what Employee has control being not infected with CV

[5:18 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: I am sorry, but it seems to me that the decision then, is whether you (or anyone) should still be working for this Employer. It is not for the G/MOH to mandate/legislate in this case.

There are regulations - under public health act, i believe - that can be used to penalise Employers who flout the law by putting their Employees at risk.

[5:18 pm, 26/01/2022] +Elena Woo: But spread risk is heightened.

[5:19 pm, 26/01/2022] +Caleb: +1

[5:21 pm, 26/01/2022] +Caleb: Meanwhile this is going to open for booking  https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/istana-hold-chinese-new-year-open-house-2451441

[5:22 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: The G/MOH had never stopped anyone from going to see the doctor when the employee is unwell. The employer, also has discretion to decide if an employee is taking advantage of the situation and whether they still want to keep the employee on the payroll.

Employees earning less than a certain salary are protected by labour laws and can seek free legal advise/help if unfairly treated by their employers

[5:32 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: sounds like a "CV-party" πŸ˜…

[5:34 pm, 26/01/2022] +Joseph: I think you are referring to this article?

https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/singapore-public-servants-to-work-3-days-in-office-2-days-at-home

"Singapore's largest employer, the Government, is encouraging public servants who can work from home to return to the office three out of five working days as a general guideline."|

[5:46 pm, 26/01/2022] +BL: Guidelines really need bringing into line. I took a daycation, say by the pool on my one. Literally no one else there at all. I was told I need to wear my mask unless in the pool. This is why people look to circumvent the rules - because they are enforced without thought or context.

[5:46 pm, 26/01/2022] +BL: on my *own

[5:48 pm, 26/01/2022] +BL: The 5 people limit is also looking rather thoughtless. Gov needs to review all the 'rules' and revise them post CNY.
