📢 Topic 📢
The latest Polytechnic Graduate Employment Survey released on 15 Jan 2026 highlighted that full-time permanent employment for fresh polytechnic graduates stayed stable in 2025, while starting pay continued to rise. The results come amid concerns among tertiary graduates about their job prospects in a more uncertain labour market and volatile economic climate.
💬 What are your views on the latest Polytechnic Graduate Employment Survey results?
The survey reflects graduate employment outcomes six months after graduation, and are expected to improve beyond the six-month mark, the joint statement from the five polytechnics said. Based on labour market data from the Ministry of Manpower, total employment continued to grow in 2025, the statement said.
📌 Key results from the survey
- The overall rate of graduates securing employment (including full-time, temporary, freelance or accepted offers) was about 90% within six months after graduation of after completion of national service, slightly down from 90.4% in 2024.
- 54.2% of them were in full-time permanent jobs in 2025, a slight dip from 54.6% in 2024.
- The median gross monthly salary for those in full-time permanent jobs increased to around S$3,000 in 2025, up from about S$2,900 in 2024.
- The latest results also for the first time gave more details about graduates who have not secured work. This group falls into three categories: those who received but rejected job offers, those who applied but did not receive any offers, and those who did not look for full-time work.
📌 Change in how employment is defined
- For the first time, the survey results broadened its employment definition to include graduates who had already accepted a job offer but had not started work yet and those actively preparing to start a business, in addition to those already working. Previously, only graduates already employed at the time of the survey were counted in the "employed" category.
- The survey also provided more detailed breakdowns of graduates who had not secured employment — such as people who had rejected offers, those who applied but didn’t receive offers, or those who weren’t looking for a job.
📌 Support for Graduates
- Support is available for graduates looking for jobs, including at the polytechnics, from Workforce Singapore and the National Trades Union Congress, and through the Graduate Industry Traineeships.

Note that the reports are for poly grads specifically
Daniel, [16/1/2026 11:11 am]
You are right. I stand corrected, my message then is wrong.
Khai Mun L., [16/1/2026 11:12 am]
They might be easier to find jobs because less pay, and have more practical skills compared to uni grads

Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 1:01 pm]
Still studying uni not sure about the market at the moment
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 1:53 pm]
1. I don't know of poly graduates job opportunities - as my circles are Uni graduates.
2. One of my nephew is poly graduate but has enrol in University and graduated.
3. But not sure he got a job or not as he is doing Green sustainability - got to check with him this coming CNY.
4. But read from the 2nd liner news media, the number of news about fresh graduates from IHLs difficulties in getting jobs has tapered down considerably unlike last year - were quite bad. Alot of such news. Even CNA news broadcast highlight a few documentaries on this. But now also seems to taper down.
5. Not sure on the ground is fresh graduates be it Poly, Uni or ITE - got people having difficulties in securing a job or not.
6. But seems like less tense.
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:04 pm]
Notice alot of disagree and strongly disagree in the polls.
Should voice out here what is happening on the ground.
Else nobody know how is the job market now for the fresh graduates or those unable to secure a job.
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:10 pm]
1st temporary jobs are easy to find but that doesn't mean they are satisfied
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:11 pm]
And is the job related to what they learn in poly is another thing
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:11 pm]
Oh is it true that fresh graduates are taking temp jobs instead of securing a permanent good salary jobs based on what they trained in?
365, [16/1/2026 3:11 pm]
I wouldn't be surprised
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:12 pm]
I mean we need to earn a living
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:12 pm]
Unless 肯老
365, [16/1/2026 3:12 pm]
Not very relatable for me since I'm past that stage of life already, but I wouldn't be surprised if this is the case
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:13 pm]
Some of them work part time in macdonald while waiting for uni can be also consider employed
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:14 pm]
I think those who poll disagree and strongly disagree should post their comments here so that government can take action to address their concerns.
Else only poll but don't know the root causes, government don't know what went wrong.
Wasted your opportunity to rectify issues that is not going right on the ground.
365, [16/1/2026 3:21 pm]
Just speculation here, competition is one of the factors obviously, especially for industries where there's naturally very little open positions available.
For example bio-chemist, to my knowledge not a lot of demand for new labour but there's many graduates every year. Whatever open position by chance, has to be competed amongst so many graduates. And this is not even considering the terms of employment yet.
Second speculation is general hiring freeze due to global uncertainties. Who knows what's going to happen next, will that affect supply chain routes, will that affect demand for production, all these uncertainties might make companies put a pause on any expansion plan and keep risk minimal.
365, [16/1/2026 3:22 pm]
I can't think of an industry off the top of my mind now, if there's one that can self sustain within Singapore itself. We are so globally connected, the current affairs are definitely putting companies on the back foot for any expansion and growth plans.
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:23 pm]
Only healthcare are short of workers
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:23 pm]
Other than that I don't see any much hope as a gen z
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:24 pm]
If biochemistry is not hiring too many workers, then IHLs should reduce the course intakes and let other faculties increase intake.
Should match industry demands to course enrolment.
Else if mismatch, then fresh graduates are not produced to meet industry needs.
Bad for business and bad for fresh graduates.
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:25 pm]
I think IT, AI, finance industries still need alot of workers.
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:25 pm]
Then again the industrial world Change so fast that you don't know what is in demand in the next 3 years
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:26 pm]
IT and finance are dying I think
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:26 pm]
That's why continuous education and upgrading is required.
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:26 pm]
The thing is is our skills still relevant after ns
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:26 pm]
Since 2 years has past
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:27 pm]
Hmm...
Not as I know.
Because IT and finance are still recruiting based on what I know.
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:27 pm]
What I heard they are position but not recruiting
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:27 pm]
So called fake recruiting
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:28 pm]
AI, cybersecurity are still strongly in demands.
Heard that software development still needed even if ChatGpt can produce vibe code.
365, [16/1/2026 3:28 pm]
Bio-chemistry is just an example, how many other courses will have to shrink as well, and then is the total opportunities even commensurate to the population?
It will also feed into a self-serving cycle, fewer people to take up, less interest over time, even less demand for it, then eventually it'll just disappear altogether.
365, [16/1/2026 3:28 pm]
This is also a good point
365, [16/1/2026 3:28 pm]
Whatever is available now, may not match reality 3 years later
365, [16/1/2026 3:29 pm]
IT is a huge spectrum, it is still hiring, but maybe not for what it's most well-known for: software and web development
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:29 pm]
I think IT and finance positions are taken up.
Not fake recruitment.
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:30 pm]
Oh is it.
I read from a news that web and software development still needed.
365, [16/1/2026 3:30 pm]
Not as hot and hyped as the 2 years after covid
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:30 pm]
My classmates say he chose TCM over IT course as it change very fast, don't know if it is still relevant after a few years
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:30 pm]
Understood.
365, [16/1/2026 3:31 pm]
I'm not sure how vibe coding is going to work out, but the technology as it is right now, it's a dud
365, [16/1/2026 3:31 pm]
It can assist to come up with a quick base, that's about it
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:31 pm]
Now AI, cybersecurity and could be quantum computing in demand.
365, [16/1/2026 3:31 pm]
You still need foundational understanding
365, [16/1/2026 3:32 pm]
AI development should be in demand, not AI user. AI user will probably be an expected skill for everyone in future, like using the internet.
365, [16/1/2026 3:33 pm]
Cyber is still hiring, but is quite seasonal
365, [16/1/2026 3:33 pm]
Usually end of year or around Mar/apr period will open up more
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:33 pm]
Yes. ChatGpt vibe code is not the solution that many CEOs thought.
They fire alot of software developers.
Rely on ChatGpt vibe code.
Create a big mess.
Now got to recruit back software developers.
Luckily Singapore business didn't do that.
365, [16/1/2026 3:34 pm]
Cyber also has very few positions that you can join as a fresh grad with an average portfolio
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:34 pm]
Yes AI R&D, AI development, data analytics in high demand.
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:35 pm]
Hmm...
Cybersecurity needs experience professional.
But if don't train up fresh graduates, in future no continuation.
Industry also die.
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:36 pm]
But then as I mentioned after ns most of the guys might already forget 30% of the knowledge, and basic entry jobs are dying
365, [16/1/2026 3:36 pm]
Yup, the "entry level" position is usually a shift based one
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:37 pm]
And some industry by nature eg. Science have lesser vacation for fresh grads
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:38 pm]
When you look in science industry most post need at least a degree
365, [16/1/2026 3:39 pm]
Iirc the government has a program to linkup cooperations with unis for jobs? Not sure if poly has one as well. I'm also a bit blurry on this, need to double check my information
365, [16/1/2026 3:39 pm]
The traineeship program I believe?
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:40 pm]
I think now many companies recruiting intern to be permanent staff.
I come across a few like that.
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:41 pm]
That means, companies more confident in the economy.
365, [16/1/2026 3:41 pm]
SIT has an integrated work study program, I think it's helpful, and perhaps something similar could be implemented across our tertiary educational institutes?
365, [16/1/2026 3:42 pm]
Not part of the curriculum, but maybe a program to help manage such an arrangement, exclusively for Singaporean students
365, [16/1/2026 3:43 pm]
Getting that experience should also help build some connections, and the company could already assess you and is familiar with you upon graduation
365, [16/1/2026 3:43 pm]
It's something I had wanted but I just couldn't make the cut for SIT
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:44 pm]
Important for fresh graduates to secure a good internship.
Try a few to see which one you like and companies that engage you in internship can also measure whether it is a good fit rather than just fresh interview.
Upon internship completion, normally they will recruit the interns as permanent staff.
Previously this is how I recruit my staff.
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:45 pm]
I thought SIT accept all Polytechnic graduates.
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:45 pm]
There's cut off point bro
365, [16/1/2026 3:45 pm]
The course I applied for only had an intake of 80 at the time
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:46 pm]
And based on interview
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:47 pm]
I see.
I not familiar.
365, [16/1/2026 3:48 pm]
Anyway back to topic, rather than coming up with a plan after graduation, why not try to integrate it in while they are studying to improve their opportunities upon graduation.
I think the advantage is that companies do not have to fully commit to a new employment, thus less risk and more acceptance to try out a candidate.
365, [16/1/2026 3:48 pm]
The standard 1 or even 3 months probation is still a risk for companies
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:48 pm]
Actually this is more ideal.
365, [16/1/2026 3:49 pm]
But a short stint with students, and perhaps not even full time at the work, is less risky for companies
365, [16/1/2026 3:49 pm]
They take less risk, more willing to accept, then the students have more opportunities to learn and showcase what they can pick up and perform.
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:50 pm]
I prefer internship and then company recruiting.
Win win for both sides.
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:51 pm]
From my Intel gov not really hiring also
365, [16/1/2026 3:51 pm]
I think there's some fundamental differences, for internship you're working full time, the work study program is some days in school some days at work, some days even half half
365, [16/1/2026 3:52 pm]
In this case there's argument for a lower costing for companies also, since it's not like a full time employment
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:52 pm]
Base on TikTok moe is just maintaining the numbers of teachers in school and not expanding hiring
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:52 pm]
Oh is it true?
365, [16/1/2026 3:53 pm]
Internship is akin to a full-time contract employment, just that the responsibilities and contract period is minor
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:53 pm]
Yes. Those with job openings are usually post with high turn off rate
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:54 pm]
My friend work in HDB said she wants to cry as the workload is just too heavy
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:54 pm]
Understood.
I think work study program has its merit.
But not many companies have resources for such tight integration except those big ones.
Hence internship is 2nd best.
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:54 pm]
It's emotionally daunting to her
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:55 pm]
So work culture is another part of story
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:55 pm]
But her superior should control the workload.
Last time I allocate the work fairly and always check on their workload.
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:56 pm]
No eh gov all by system de
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:56 pm]
Don't know why allocate so many case to her
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:56 pm]
Thought government more balance in dishing out workload compared to the private sector.
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:57 pm]
Huh..
You mean system allocate?
The project I dish out cannot be allocated by system.
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:57 pm]
Ya. You need to respond to people complain to one service
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:58 pm]
Oh I see.
Public fronting customer service.
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:58 pm]
So somehow she needs to handle more complain than her collegue according to her lah
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 3:58 pm]
And she need to go on site to talk also
365, [16/1/2026 3:59 pm]
Government jobs in general are just more systemic than private, can be either good or bad.
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 3:59 pm]
Her superior should step in if she raise the workload.
Superior usually can solve the problem.
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 4:00 pm]
Sometimes it's people problem or organisation problem
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 4:01 pm]
Basically if there's high turn off rate on a certain position, gov need to investigate
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 4:01 pm]
Depends on the project you handle.
Routine jobs more systemic.
Bigger projects depends on human allocation because it needs multiple skillsets to handle.
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 4:01 pm]
And don't be stingy to open new position
365, [16/1/2026 4:02 pm]
Systemic as in more rigid structure and processes, not just about allocation.
A lot of bureaucracy.
365, [16/1/2026 4:03 pm]
Counts towards budget ah, need to answer to citizens also
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 4:03 pm]
And look at moe why are they not expanding teacher forces with so many teachers complain heavy workload
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 4:04 pm]
I think government also cannot expand uncontrollablly.
They keep their headcount according to needs.
Singapore civil service is the most efficient and effective - and keep headcount reasonable not over staff.
Need to employ automation to cut unnecessary expenses and keep productivity high.
And rated best in the world.
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 4:04 pm]
Else taxpayers got to pay high tax to keep civil service
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 4:05 pm]
Well that's why I object to bring in so many foreigner to be Singaporean. As resources is just this much, bringing in more people will mean some people lose out and no resources
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 4:06 pm]
Only truly foreign talent and those have the intention to open business to come in
365, [16/1/2026 4:10 pm]
Issue is, who's to be the judge on whether these foreigners are beneficial or not.
Have to keep in mind that many of our job opportunities are from international organizations, who were promised access to a wide-range of talents, not just Singaporeans, and they get to pick and choose based on merits and according to their wants and needs.
I believe there's some sort of correlation with regards to free employment and free trade. Even now it's not exactly completely free, there are some restrictions.
365, [16/1/2026 4:11 pm]
The stricter you are on the labour market availability, the less enticing we will be as a hub for foreign investments, and could end up losing a lot of jobs instead if they choose to pull out.
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 4:11 pm]
At least gov job should have restrictions
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 4:11 pm]
Civil servants
365, [16/1/2026 4:11 pm]
That I'd agree to
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 4:11 pm]
Since job openings are limited
365, [16/1/2026 4:13 pm]
Barring specific jobs where there's an urgency to cover, civil service jobs should be for Singaporeans only. And if there's an urgency and really unable to fill with Singaporeans, then should restrict to a contract role only
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 4:14 pm]
Civil service predominantly are Singaporeans.
Unless talents needed are not available and less sensitive roles, then got PRs.
365, [16/1/2026 4:16 pm]
I'm not sure what the composition of the employees under government paycheck is, but my stance is to have Singaporeans helm them as much as possible, and any employment of foreigners should be temporary at best, i.e contract role.
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 4:19 pm]
I doubt got foreigners on work pass except contract jobs.
But PRs yes.
Many become new citizens.
My 1st senior is a PR and my previous immediate boss is a PR.
Now they are citizens.
In fact their whole families including their children are citizens now.
365, [16/1/2026 4:20 pm]
I think in the case for PR, they can have access to more roles than non-PRs, but the level of the position should be limited.
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 4:22 pm]
And for new citizens may I ask to be pr to work at least 10 yrs-15 yrs in Singapore to integrate before becoming citizens
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 4:22 pm]
That's why Singaporeans are still predominant.
PRs only when we lack talents and less sensitive roles they will take.
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 4:23 pm]
Not sure about the criteria.
Only immigration will know.
Not all succeed to be citizens.
The criteria to be citizens very tough.
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 4:23 pm]
So far 2 yrs of pr can apply for citizenship
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 4:24 pm]
Which I think too short
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 4:24 pm]
Not all succeed.
Some 10 years still cannot get.
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 4:24 pm]
Unless the pr contribution to Singapore very big.
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 4:25 pm]
My senior and my previous boss should meet this criteria.
Because they help to do many big national projects.
Khai Mun L., [16/1/2026 6:13 pm]
I replied neutral in 2nd poll because generally the job market is not fantastic, is rather flat.
Companies are not actively hiring due to global business instability and AI cost cutting
Khai Mun L., [16/1/2026 6:13 pm]
It doesn't only affect graduates, but all other workers
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 6:13 pm]
Goodness.
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 6:14 pm]
So the economic resiliency taskforce should address this.
Khai Mun L., [16/1/2026 6:19 pm]
What sg can do is limited though. We are affected by global events.
Covid, wars, tariffs, inflation, AI take over existing jobs etc..
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 6:26 pm]
SG government can address:-
1. Finding new markets.
2. Expanding existing markets.
3. New collaboration to expand regional markets.
4. Find synergetic collaboration to re-engineer new supply chain.
5. How to infuse AI into jobs to complement workers and business instead of replacing workers like the centralised redesign centre.
I roughly able to size up virtually the economic resiliency taskforce are moving towards the above initiatives.
I think they will be able to announce the concrete initiatives soon.
We should hear some of it during Budget 2026 come 12 Feb I think.
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 6:28 pm]
I don't have privy information.
But I can sense the above happenings.

Interview that is why not a good approach for recruitment.
Internships better gauge for both candidates and business.

But salary are bad. The main purpose of a job is to earn money
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 6:33 pm]
Sometimes parents see it this way

Initially the salary is nominal.
But after conversion into permanent jobs, salary often revised.

Initially I got a job offer that gives me 1.8k my parents straight away object it
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 6:35 pm]
That's why I stuck studying instead of working
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 6:35 pm]
Huh, I thought you should decide whether it is suitable for you and whether it got potential?
Your parents not in touch with the company won't know what is best for you.
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 6:37 pm]
Older generation see it as money money money

They even compare the salary to a cleaner
Jun Ming, [16/1/2026 6:40 pm]
Their logic is simple.i pay so much for your studies not let you earn something equivalent to a cleaner
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 6:40 pm]
I don't interfere with my son decision.
Internship, salary, the company he attached to, the type of course he takes, and finally securing the scholarship.
He make all the decisions by himself.
Then he discuss with me.
Most of the time, he let me know why and how he arrives at his decision.
I will mostly support or give advices.
But I don't ban his ideas.
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 6:41 pm]
His intern pay also very little.
(Cleaner pay)
Now he earn alot (higher than median pay).

Sometimes parents just don't see it.
LCL (Danny 心), [16/1/2026 6:44 pm]
That's why children must be wise.
Parents also must be wise.
