On 25 February, Minister for Education Chan Chun Sing explained the aim of the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) lessons on the Israel-Hamas conflict.
💭 *What are your views on Minister Chan’s explanation and do you feel it is important for schools to help students navigate complex issues such as the Israel-Hamas conflict?*
Minister Chan said the CCE lessons are not meant to be a history lesson, nor is it meant to ascribe who is right or wrong at which period of history, and highlighted the aims of the CCE lessons:
1️⃣ To understand their own emotions and empathise with others.
2️⃣ To reflect how we can safeguard our cohesion and harmony in a multiracial society.
3️⃣ To learn to verify information sources before sharing them responsibly.
4️⃣ To appreciate the diversity of views and conduct conversations sensitively and respectfully.
Minister Chan also said: “One of the things we really want our students to appreciate is the diversity of perspectives out there. Because within our multi-racial society, we have the Malay-Muslim community, the Jewish community, Christians, Buddhists. We have old and young people. People from different backgrounds. And one of the important lessons, is how do we appreciate the diversity of perspectives and conduct conversations respectfully with one another.”
When asked how would MOE address concerns of teachers who feel conflicted that this is against their personal beliefs, Minister Chan said: “We understand that different teachers may have their individual concerns and this is not just about the Malay Muslim community. It can also apply to the Jewish community, the Christian communities, or any other people of different faiths, or from different backgrounds. Our school leaders will therefore systematically facilitate the process by forming teams who are able to deliver the lessons. We make it a point to make sure that we help the schools to form the teams to deliver it as a team rather than as individuals.”
Minister Chan added that the CCE lesson materials will be updated “based on new developments and information. We will also evolve our teaching methods, taking in feedback from stakeholders.”

- Be more transparent about the CCE syllabus
- Be clear and transparent about the goals of the particular discussion from the outset. There are some goals which should be pursued, e.g. racial and religious harmony, rejection of radicalisation
- Give students opportunities to hear and encounter different perspectives. For a topic like this, would be useful to invite views from the Mufti and Chief Rabbi, as well as MFA and MHA officers
- Invite students to think and reflect on what is best for Singapore <This message was edited>

2) Agree w Darius's idea to get Rabbi n Mufti involved. Perhaps video for scalability. Esp useful for older students. Teachers could facilitate from a critical thinking point of view
3) If the intention is to impart empathy for those navigating armed conflict, perhaps we could look at Myanmar since we have more Burmese persons in our midst. This could be designed for the young
4) The curriculum n intent should be for local schools, madrasahs, mission schools and international schools so everyone can appreciate local context.

1) Singaporeans do go intl schools
2) If we don't , then we get a whole set of people growing up here who may stay on who are disjointed. So some commonality at least in experience is useful. I would think joint efforts at things like these and perhaps activities like outward bound school can be helpful for cohesion

26/2/24, 12:55 pm - +Poh S Lim: This Middle East conflict has been going on for decades, even before Singapore’s independence. We sure will not be able to fix it from here. What we can do is remain neutral, as a nation. MOE’s approach of forming teams to teach the subject matter is one way to reduce the chance of a “lone wolf” actor who may radicalise a segment of student population. On top of that these teams must be sufficiently diverse so that it doesn’t form a “radicalisation team”.
Unfortunately, the historical context has to still be taught for students full understanding, but issues, challenges and empathy must be included in whatever is taught in the curriculum.

1. External events do affect Singaporeans and residents - how people think and express their opinions, feelings and emotions.
2. And people do take sides - as events unfold.
3. This is make worst when people are colored by their own background, religions, culture and belief - and hence tends to take the side that are similar to their background, religions, culture and belief - regardless of actions and deeds are justifiable or unjustifiable based on blind faith.
Objectiveness, justice and fairness are often thrown out of the windows.
This is really disturbing.
This trend applies to both groups - not just one group as observed.
4. Even when this external events are not brought up for attention, with the proliferation of online media, social media, and online fake news floated floating in Internet - many Singaporeans and residents will have read it - develop strong feelings, emotion and may respond with their positions in online social media forum and in their social settings.
5. But Singapore population demographics is make up of people who are multi-racial, multi-religions, multi-culture.
Negative feelings and emotions are not good for our social fabric and unity as one Singaporeans.
6. Hence a formal conduit such as CCE to bring up external events purely based on facts - will help students and young adults to see issues as it is and make assessment objectively purely based on humanity angle - not colored by races, reglions, culture or belief.
7. Purely based on facts and the events that have unfold, this is my assessment as as a neutral party not colored by faith, belief or culture:-
a. Hamas massacre of innocent Israel civilians and foreigners and taking hostages of innocent victims are wrong.
b. Israel collective punishment of Palestinians civilians by bombing innocent civilians and starving them are wrong.
c. Oppression and driving Palestinians civilians from their homes and settlement are wrong.
d. Hamas and others constitution and resolution that Israel must cease to exist are wrong.
e. Permanent solutions that ensure lasting peace and resolution - to ensure both Israel and Palestine have place to live and exist must be look into and effectively carried out.

3. Singapore mutual inclusiveness, diversity, social cohesion, harmony, peace, tolerance, patience and compassion - are hallmark for our decades of peace, coexistence and prosperity - in our route in Nation Building.

Hence we must manage what external events have unfold - and trigger strong feelings and emotion within our local communities - and hence proper management and approach to how external events unfold become important so as not to let external events - bring unhappiness, turmoil and unrest within our communities.
5. I felt that MOE CCE approach to bring out such a sensitive issue based on objective facts - is appropriate (else with uncontrolled skewed or distorted information happenings at the background through social media - it may destabilise Singapore social fabric and trigger unhappy incidents within Singapore.
6. Basically we cannot hide ourselves like ostrich putting our head into the sand - and hope that external events won't affect our people - with proliferation of social media and online news.
Hence, bring the sensitive issue up in a transparent and objective manner - will be the best way to manage emotion and feelings - and should strong feelings and emotion develop - tackle it sensitively and effectively - rather than let it simmers and trigger unhappy incidents.

When a person attaches to an object, a subject or an idea, he or she will feel, at times feeling emotional and at extreme moments feeling lost or gain over anything that is associated with this attached object or attached idea. The power of attachment is to involve and the degree of involvement varies according to needs and wants.
Whereas if a person detaches an object, a subject or an idea, he or she will feel nothing!
Living in a fast moving world, we can use detachment just to mellow down our inner ego and hopefully coming out of emotion or feelings or sentiment; a more sensible, less friction, and balanced human especially when we are interacting sensitive issues with our loved ones like our children or our parents or colleagues or strangers.
That's the power of detachment and vice versa the power of attachment! Be flexible, use it either way, interchanging and it can be lacking that moment and the next moment engaging.

The thrive of human doings are evidence since the Stone age period (primates of primitive and non language based society) to this current complex world of working and thriving. Often and arguably, the counter points of circumvention are fair playing rules. The idea of such an extraordinary behavior in all ways and methods to edge others by the millions count seldom get noticed until these loopholes are discovered through the simple pitfall of Greed!
Is circumventing wrong or is it not the fault of these perpetrators against the stone setting of rules and regulations from policy to trades agreement. How to not tempt people from thinking otherwise and to stop circumvention from happening?

The colossal media of the World is getting more complex and more players and stakeholders are using the Digital Mass Media to broadcast their thoughts, opinions and view or sell products.. On multiple platforms injecting and presented by favourite and trusted news broadcasters, experts opinion, powerful global politicians, to socialites or celebrities to influencers and thousands of times transmitting each point of view or in each of these news pieces come with attached links and strings of related news. All of these colossal activities of production and information war have caused the World citizens of all age mixed up, emotional, and divided into fractions and factions and reactions in each society humankind living in now in matters related to war and human sufferings! That's understanbily the basic of human nature to compare and to corelate one another.
Break it up?
How to monitor questionable channels of news or written opinion pieces of findings and breaking news is one big attraction to the billions of people! It really breaks through into the millions of minds which will have profound impacts and repercussions onto the next couple of millions who interact with the millions out there whether they are ignorance or innocence or arrogantly and disregard the real truth and intention of these layers of information all piling, conveniently and easily access 24/7 into the personal hand-held mobile devices.
So how to not harm and how to rewrite or rewire all misinformation and disinformation from viewers? What are the metrics to call out such embedded strategy of intentions and deceptions? Will calibrated censorship save a nation from external influences especially when a nation is politically and or socially unstable or their movements and activities of imbalanced out of inequalities and the existential threats to individuals livelihood? Lastly, there will be more prevalent of external sources influencing other nations in an election year! That summed things up and this last straw will hurt the people's backs!
A Parent Nation?
If time is of the essence, the idea of becoming a Parent Nation to nurture their children in the backdrop of a complicated society and the larger roles of empowering responsible parenting (though some parents are not capable and not ready to act).
It is now to skill all parents to handle sensitive information or an example is sex education which is a shy topic to Asian families in the attempt to teach the "birds & the bees" to the children and teenagers minds. Its simply said than done!
However in the consistent fighting over information from IG, FB, X, video to TikTok, how children and teenagers or adults learned through these fun going media platforms. Are there more harms and distortions or more goodness and information to learn new skills or new knowledge?
What is permissible exposure of these captivating contents which the younger minds will access and internally assess as norm and alright things to adopt.
Sex and violence are no-no tolerance topics. How about religion and different races and the other unseen sides of living which displayed unpleasant behaviors when compared to own behaviors.
War and conflict is another no no that requires knowledge and in-depth understanding of historical politics and current geopolitics.
How to teach our children and teenagers?
To adopt a casual, detach, and less serious outlook regardless of content especially from abroad and far away from our home ground. It's a prudent metric of not totally believing these overseas materials because it may not be true and it may be a one-sided narrative. Seeing is believing and not just believing!
Counter Measurements?
Predict how emotions are communicated at different point and platforms during the week (weekdays vs weekends) and matching each cluster of emotion with the appropriate messages and/or ads; all of these data points collate into a higher confidence level and superoptimise and maximise the probability of guaranteed hit or targeted outcomes!
We are searching for anticipation (predicative in nature) of emotions or reactions across the entire demography and thereafter, participation.
The key is weekends are the "fruits of the loom" and weekdays are the " early or leading indicators" of the low lying fruits!
Please remember this true analysis of human behaviors and psychology! Applying to marketing of products and services or targeting a narrative of intent with or without a hidden agenda!
There are urgent needs now to build and ring our ethos and trust within our sovereign nation and our government. Both privately and publicly in trust that our news are the trusted News over other overseas information in print or in performance.
In hope we trust the future of digitisation as the equaliser of many inequalities of life and economic activities. In reality, digitisation will not solve the bad behaviors of humankind just when invention or innovation reduces most lapses but the code itself is not full proof and human will attempt to circumvent through breaking and recreating codes.
