On 8 June 2023, SM Tharman informed PM Lee of his intention to step down as the Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for Social Policies and to resign from the People’s Action Party, in order to contest the upcoming Presidential Election.

SM Tharman said: “If I am fortunate enough to be elected as President, I will represent the unity of Singaporeans, of all races and religions, social backgrounds, and political leanings, at a time when views in the population are becoming more diverse.”

💬 What are your thoughts on SM Tharman’s announcement and the upcoming Presidential election this year?

SM Tharman added, “I will be thorough and impartial in fulfilling the constitutional duties of the President with regard to the prudent use of the nation's reserves and the key appointments which preserve the integrity of the Singapore system.”

SM Tharman said it had been a difficult decision to make as he was very comfortable being a policymaker. “But I think we are entering a fundamentally different era,” he noted.

"Apart from changes within Singapore as the population and electorate mature, the world is now set up for crises – economic crises or pandemics, which are going to keep coming – as well as geopolitical conflict", he said.

“We’ve got to hold our own as Singapore – a very small country with a strong reputation built up over the years – but we’ve got to hold our own, so that the population holds together, we can still do well as Singaporeans, and feel good about being Singaporeans,” he said.

2. He has :-

a. very strong financial background (most suitable to safeguard our Reserves), 

b. very strong domestic support (can perform a unified role of all Singaporeans)

c. appointed to many reputable global financial and economic roles (can help to promote Singapore interest to the World - economic interest - financial, business, investment, trade etc; political and social interest).

3. Hence, he got my support and my close friend support for the coming Presidential post.

1. As for whether should there be a contest or no contest for the Presidential post - I hope there will be a contest - and we can exercise our mandate to choose our next President.

Preferably, the contest will be SM Tharman and a non-establishment supported candidate.

2. The reasons being :-

a. A contested Presidential post - will provide even stronger legitimacy and mandate when the President is elected by the majority.

b. It will strengthen our democratic core - to work independently with good conscience to safeguard the people's and the Country's Sovereign Wealth.

c. It provide an implied indication of the mood of people - as subconsciously, people tend to associate a PAP-supported candidate to GE mood.

The margin will provide some indication of how GE will pan out and the support for our 4G leaders - as our 4G leadership undergo a transition and formation.

In fact, this is the most concern issue on the top of everybody's head.

But the G should not use this as a litmus test for their support though. Voting for Tharman as President is very different from voting for PAP at the GE.

1. If I remember this case correctly, it was pitched against and accused the social welfare officer, AGC, school and authorities to have forcibly take the child away from the mother who is the custodian of this child.

The father was a drug abused and no longer stay with the mother and the child.

2. The child was found by the teachers with bruises and suspected that she has been beaten and abused at home - but instead blame her bruise on the child being an ADHD - and the injuries were her own doing - and not administer by the mother.

3. Now, her mother is send to IMH - and her mother is the likely suspect to have abuse the child.

Very dubious claim are make that her father abuse her even though her father don't stay with the child, claims are made that the child injure herself, and claims are even make that when she is under the care of institution, injuries occur.

4. Under such dubious circumstances, the child protection, well-being and welfare are best taken care of by the State. Hence the most logical approach is for the State welfare institutions to make arrangement to take care of this child.

5. It will be irresponsible to let the child father or mother relatives to take care of the child - as the child was abused by both her father and mother when under their custody.

No one can guarantee the child safety - unless through State protection - until appropriate legal and social procedures are followed through.

Until and unless the child safety and protection is assess and assure will the State decide who will be accorded the custody of this child.

6. Meanwhile, the child should be given a proper home, a trusted custodian, go to school and properly fed and well taken care off.

7. Worst come to worst, the child may have to be in State custody until the child grow up and become adult, properly educated, have a stable job and home - before she can tie up with her relatives - so that this child will not be further abused.

Another 4 years, he will be way past his retirement age.

Self renewal in the government is always an ongoing process.

Getting younger generations to helm the government is an imperative process - as the problems we face are getting high tech.

Eg. How to govern AI driven digital economy, Blockchain, quantum computing, cbdc (central bank digital currency) etc.

Younger generations who are trained and more adapt to new technologies and new issues will be required to govern our country.

SM Tharman with track record and years of solid experience can be a safe pair of hands to see the government are on track and on an even keel.
