[10:01 am, 07/06/2023] +REACH: πŸ“’ Topic πŸ“’

It was recently announced that the Singapore Turf Club (STC) site in Kranji will be returned to the Government by March 2027 due to land constraints and the dwindling spectatorship at the track on race days. The site will be redeveloped and used by the Government for housing and other potential uses such as leisure and recreation.

The closure also marks the end of over 180 years of horse racing in Singapore and the final horse race meeting will take place in October 2024 for the 100th Grand Singapore Gold Cup.

πŸ’¬ What are your views on the closure of the STC?

πŸ“ŒLand needs

Spanning about 120 hectares, the site’s redevelopment is in line with a broader plan to develop the northern region, including the redevelopment of Woodlands Checkpoint, enhancement of  Woodlands Town under the Remaking Our Heartland programme and a masterplan for a high-tech agri-food cluster in Lim Chu Kang.

The Government will also take into consideration the needs and requirements of various equestrian entities that intend to continue operating in Singapore, including compatibility with other land uses being considered for the area.

πŸ“Œ Retrenchment of STC employees

About 350 STC employees will be retrenched in phases, with the first phase starting in about 16 months. They will receive retrenchment packages as well as transition support, including counselling, job placement assistance, personal career guidance and skills training.

πŸ“Œ Decline in spectatorship

Between 2010 and 2019, the average attendance per race day declined from 11,000 to 6,000 and fell even further to 2,900 when the racecourse reopened in April 2022. Thus, the turnover from races as a percentage of the total Tote Board turnover has also about halved.

πŸ“ŒSupport for stakeholders

The Government will work with Tote Board, STC and other stakeholders, to ensure their respective needs are addressed during the transition period and to commemorate the heritage of STC and local horse racing.

Racehorse trainers and owners will receive support for horse maintenance and exportation and the exportation of the horses is expected to be completed by 2026, following the final race. For other tenant stakeholders, such as Singapore Turf Club tenants and livery horse owners, STC will continue its existing contractual obligations.

[10:05 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: if the land is really required why not do it on the old turf club first

[10:05 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: horse racing might be linked to gambling by many but this is a sports which is of rich history

[10:08 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: is not any tom dick or harry games like the comments in social media it takes alot of study and knowledge to really to be in the game. In fact if want to put it in atas way, this is really a gentlemen game

[10:08 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: also why not govt release how much profit is being made from these per race?

[10:09 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: or even after these profit per race still not enuff for the kpi.....

[10:09 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: and also given our dwindling population number is there really a need to built more hdb?

[10:10 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: or shoudl i say built more boarding house for migrants white collar workers

[10:11 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: also if horse racing is to be killed make sure you do that to polo club also and also those leisure riding and maybe please killed horse riding sports (dun forget we were represented by our only Singapore lady in Olympic or some regional games)....

[10:12 am, 07/06/2023] +Frankie Wee: Singapore land not enough spare

[10:12 am, 07/06/2023] +Kenneth Lee WM: The process was executed very badly.

In the straitstimes, it was reported that not all the stakeholders were consulted.  I would expect that all parties would be involved in the discussions to decide on the final closure date for such a major thing.

[10:12 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: if need to killed a sports i say why not kill our football team .... ever since dream team was gone ... have we ever get anything significant yet annually the budget for these so footballers o my god i rather give it to help the poor

[10:20 am, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Old turf club prime area

[10:21 am, 07/06/2023] +Rama: No more esquatron sports for Singapore

[10:21 am, 07/06/2023] +Rama: True

[10:21 am, 07/06/2023] +L: Football is inspiring for many kids and families - I go the local games and we in fact need more support for grass roots football. Horses are the for wealthy elite, like golf. Sure, there's a place for it in the world, but maybe not in Singapore.

[10:22 am, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Yes

[10:23 am, 07/06/2023] +Frankie Wee: In future Singapore will building home underground just like the same City Hall underpass with all air-con.

[10:24 am, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Believe already happens quietly for some time

[10:26 am, 07/06/2023] +Frankie Wee: https://coconuts.co/singapore/watch-singapores-distant-future-imagined-underground-city/

[10:30 am, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Agree

[10:31 am, 07/06/2023] +Rama: More imported singaporeans since our own birth rate still extremely low

[10:32 am, 07/06/2023] +Frankie Wee: Government welcome more foreigners to convert citizenship make them stay at least 5-10 years and working longer building economy

[10:33 am, 07/06/2023] +TD: This is really quite cock.

Like we really need the land to build another 4000 BTOs to sell to Malaysian PRs

[10:34 am, 07/06/2023] +Frankie Wee: Japan birth rate lowest level and

[10:34 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: in japan despite they have bigger land then us

[10:34 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: they tried as much to preserve their historical buildings and places

[10:34 am, 07/06/2023] +Frankie Wee: Every years period earthquakes hit

[10:34 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: it gives visitors a sense of real local feel

[10:35 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: if the govt thing remaking and listening to the youth of moving with times is correct

[10:35 am, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: Depth Ratio and plot ratio, to build meaningful infrastructures in view of the impediment of the variations of the future of global climate.

Depth Ratio means the allowable deepness of underground development which can be charged as Depth Devrlopmental Tax (DDT) similar to the current LBC.

[10:35 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: let me share with all many tourist i fetch remark this .. singapore is nice but will only visit 1x

[10:35 am, 07/06/2023] +Frankie Wee: Excellent

[10:36 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: reason there is NO X FACTOR ... is shopping and shopping no culture feel unlike msia, hong kong, japan thailand

[10:36 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: is just another cosmo city ....even sentosa is crap ...

[10:36 am, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: Finding ways to seek indirect taxes to fulfill many social burdens of our future!

Thanks, Frankie!

[10:37 am, 07/06/2023] +Frankie Wee: The future is near global warming earth maybe say wave heat, Covid-19 appear again and rising sea level

[10:38 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: no need global warming just ask big brother to stir more shit and nucelar will start dropping

[10:38 am, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: "No Horse Run"

《ζ²‘ζœ‰θ·‘ι©¬》

[10:39 am, 07/06/2023] +Frankie Wee: We have to fight to live on the future maybe it’s like new age

[10:39 am, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Artificial attraction only

[10:40 am, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Yes

[10:40 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: cos whatever we are doing had been seens thru and caught up by others ...

[10:41 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: we can no longer innovate .....

[10:41 am, 07/06/2023] +Rama: True

[10:41 am, 07/06/2023] +Frankie Wee: In Japan many house history abandoned $0 and sale other foreigner. Government find empty property tax over 20 years.

[10:42 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: many countries are feeding on tourism but what makes people want to come back to places like bangkok and japan over and over again that's what our STB needs to learnt and innovate please dun depend on chatGPT for answer

[10:42 am, 07/06/2023] +Rama: No novelty

[10:42 am, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Our tourism plans are pathetic

[10:43 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: also dun forget precovid days turf club used to hold many high profile races ... have they forget how many sub links industry profit from those events

[10:43 am, 07/06/2023] +Frankie Wee: But the sad day will gone everything is change

[10:44 am, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: If SG wants to plan for more population growth; three things that are Food, Water, Energy! Follows by essential infrastructures etc

[10:44 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: just a statement ooo spectators drop so must killed that land ended 350 staff retrench (yeah no big deal to them but IS 350 FAMILIES!!!) and also what about the rich men investment in their beloved horses, the trainers who spend so much time to better their rides, partnership with the horses etc

[10:44 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: is as good as killing an miniature industry

[10:45 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: but like i mentioned lets see what is the fate of polo club ....

[10:45 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: and all horse related sports .....

[10:46 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: viewership drop hahahah really if compare to football i wonder which is worst and more disgraceful

[10:46 am, 07/06/2023] +SL: I guess a feasible study indicates the benefit of closing this place. Subset industry?

[10:46 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: at least our only lady ride who is mind we all is not physically enabled BROUGHT PRIDE TO THE COUNTRY a couple of times ......

[10:47 am, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: Benefits? Costs?

[10:48 am, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: Are there development plans for Turf City? The former turf club before it moved to Kranji?

[10:50 am, 07/06/2023] +SL: I think the technology for Wide view hologram projection for artificial weather is not yet developed?

[10:50 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: horse racing was a lesiure it does not gives much benefits but s spools does alot for charities

[10:50 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: the gut feel is .. is a golden egg land waiting for the right $$$ to be release for development ..

[10:51 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: if it is treated like any land it will have be long developed

[10:52 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: dun forget there could be many vvip stayind in the area that do not want the land to be develop just be it like this (o i forget is a play groudn for many white colloar family) they have what ruby school

[10:53 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: and whatever u have there

[10:54 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: i think we have echo this soo many times in this channel

[10:54 am, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Increase payment for local legal gambling

[10:55 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: anyway my stand is ... sad to see a piece of history being closed by "moving with times" and so call hdb ......

[10:55 am, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Agree

[10:55 am, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Try and check URA website for long term development guide plans

[10:56 am, 07/06/2023] +Rama: A lot more of our history will go on soft copy in time to come

[10:58 am, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Our heritage is in text books and online!

[11:04 am, 07/06/2023] +KL: I thgt sg love to issue coins as heritage :)

[11:04 am, 07/06/2023] +KL: In fact these are passing the duty of M1 reserve to citizen or ppl

[11:05 am, 07/06/2023] +KL: So just take the coins as heritage ba

[11:05 am, 07/06/2023] +KL: Alt I also don’t agree but no choice right since announce

[11:06 am, 07/06/2023] +KL: Agree , but no choice . You should worry how many ppl will cross border to work once JB to sg  mrt build up :)

[11:08 am, 07/06/2023] +KL: The impact confirm more than the 350 families

[11:08 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: What's there to worry when daily is about 300 to 500 already crossing and business love it .... Low wage compare to local

[11:09 am, 07/06/2023] +KL: Mrt can ferry 5000 hahaha

[11:09 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: Maybe more locals will be taxi and grab and deliveries the professional local talents

[11:10 am, 07/06/2023] +KL: We can stay at east coast.

[11:14 am, 07/06/2023] +Ah Heng: Why easy coast? Hahaha catch no ball

[11:16 am, 07/06/2023] +KL: East coast pavilion

[11:16 am, 07/06/2023] +KL: :))

[11:19 am, 07/06/2023] +Rama: East Coast Plan!,

[11:27 am, 07/06/2023] +SL: Horse owner can join racing tournament in world series. 350 staffs who willing to continue can be retrain and redeployed.

[11:30 am, 07/06/2023] +Rose M K Ho: As long as they build HDB, not divide the land up & sell to pte developers....

That wud be a great injustice to taking bk this land & not following thru their plan to take bk this land !  πŸ˜…

[11:33 am, 07/06/2023] +SL: Subject to detail planning?

[11:34 am, 07/06/2023] +SL: ?

[11:39 am, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: Every million people increased, you need 1.5 hospitals with full specialised medicines, and how about schools, Intl schools and IHL, university at 20k grads.

[0:04 pm, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Dpm Hsk

[0:06 pm, 07/06/2023] +SL: I think the east cost plan is not related to the turf club. No news mentioned turf club relocating to the east cost.

[0:07 pm, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Tongue in cheek reference only

[0:16 pm, 07/06/2023] +Sam: Do bear in mind that we used to have 3 generation s staying together, now most elderly will not want to live with the daugther in law . So we do need to build more HDB, but smaller unit.

[0:17 pm, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Hong Kong style housing size

[0:17 pm, 07/06/2023] +Sam: 2 room flexi  is good enough

[0:21 pm, 07/06/2023] +SL: Why do seniors not want to stay with children’s families? Is there any practical approach to encourage them to stay together? There will be higher social costs if seniors with families live alone.

[0:23 pm, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Lifestyle expectations amongst three generations living together too vast to be practical.

[0:25 pm, 07/06/2023] +Sam: Probably nowadays seniors are better off than last time, can afford to stay alone

[0:29 pm, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Not for the masses

[0:39 pm, 07/06/2023] +Frankie Wee: Probably school will have fresh graduates to get job as high SCI FI future create project AI. That have high development change and maybe make innovation HDB building redeveloping and road to use recycle projects.

Singapore future can reach 7-8m.

[0:40 pm, 07/06/2023] +Frankie Wee: Time to study how to pass 3 generation part of family for next kin.

[0:43 pm, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Yes

[0:48 pm, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Former URA chief projects 10M!?

[0:49 pm, 07/06/2023] +Frankie Wee: Mean black and white paper project 10m population

[0:49 pm, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Yes

[0:50 pm, 07/06/2023] +Frankie Wee: It will take long way to reach development example mrt can’t over weight when too crowded

[0:53 pm, 07/06/2023] +Frankie Wee: What will happen if 10m living in Singapore this year? Maybe limit shortages foods, transportation and job. Is there enough productive capacity?

[0:56 pm, 07/06/2023] +Frankie Wee: If 100m in Singapore no room

[0:57 pm, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Don't think so

[0:57 pm, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Never will happen

[1:06 pm, 07/06/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

1. Personally, horse racing is a form of gambling from colonial time.

It is a form of sport and also for punters to bet on the winning horse - a vice activity - whereby less and less people use it as reflected by the falling patronage and majority of the Singapore residents hardly use it.

2. Economically the revenue returns does not cover the expenses in running the horse racing operations - hence a losing business venture reflecting a sunset industry.

In any economic sense, business sense and opportunity cost, to ensure a viable economic return - the tote board will have to close the business.

Else taxpayers will have to foot the bill to keep the race course running by paying salaries to staff, maintain the horses - with dwindling customers that don't make economical sense.

Wonder anyone interested to pay more income tax or gst to keep this race course running?

I won't.

[1:13 pm, 07/06/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

3. If the closure of this race course is not announced, many don't even remember that this race course exist.

Wonder anyone visit the race course as part of tourism spot?

I vaguely remember somewhere in Bukit Timah and then remember it shifted somewhere.

Only when this news announce, I realise it is near woodland.

Didn't know that it is a tourist spot - or it never is?

[1:27 pm, 07/06/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

4. One thing for sure is, did not heard of foreign tourists book tour group to visit the horse race course, or am I misinformed?

5. Hence if the race course is no longer viable, then it should destined for closure.

6. I know of a rich tycoon in Malaysia who open 30 to 50 retail stores throughout Malaysia.

I ask him are all the retail stores profitable?

He told me many are but some are not.

He will give the store manager minimum 3 months and maximum 6 months to break even and then subsequently must be profitable.

He say I setup business, the purpose is to :-

a. Earn money for my family

b. Create employment and give jobs to people.

But if the manager and the staff cannot make it profitable, he cannot let the store pull down the rest to subsidize them - as he can't be doing charity and bankrupt everyone.

To me I say he make sense, because compassion cannot be misplaced.

[1:27 pm, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: "two person world, back to the starting points..."

(“δΈ€δΊΊδΈ–η•Œ,ε›žεˆ°θ΅·η‚Ή……”)

[1:29 pm, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: What if?

[1:29 pm, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: Never says never...

[1:30 pm, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: If there was a paper written, there will be possibilities...?

[1:30 pm, 07/06/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

1. As for the 500 staff, government will need to retrain them to ensure they acquire new skillsets - train and placement - and get a good job to feed themselves and their families.

[1:30 pm, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: Benefits?

[1:32 pm, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: How about retrain these 350 or less staff to digital horse racing fixtures and operations... overseas races via digital platform which is already happening!

[1:32 pm, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: Thinking out of the building than out of the box?

[1:33 pm, 07/06/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Why promote gambling and vice activity - when they can be retrained to do something more useful?

[1:33 pm, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: Yes, ...

[1:34 pm, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: Not all staff, a handful and older staff, just in case cannot find matching new jobs or refusing reskilling? Handful

[1:35 pm, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: Younger age staff are more adaptable to change

[1:35 pm, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: Good idea, Sam!

[1:36 pm, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: A bit tight and small...

[1:38 pm, 07/06/2023] +SL: Will the bonding among families be weakened and affect self-reliance when in need?

[1:52 pm, 07/06/2023] +SL: The Polo club has its own venue @ mount pleasant. Very hard to think of a turf club to become a tourist attraction. 350 staffs can be relocated after retraining if they chose not to retire.

[1:53 pm, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: What if the mindset of people has changed over time? From what sources do these changes to behavior?

Demography, Psychography and sociography changes!

[1:53 pm, 07/06/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

1. As for population load, an economy must have sufficient workers, younger generations - in order to sustain the economy and ensure business, investors continue to be rooted into Singapore:-

a. Singapore will be facing a boomers elderly whereby those born in 1970 and older - will make up of 300,000 or more elderly.

b. Singapore birth rate are falling in fact about 1.2 - unable to replace the population of 2 - 1 father, 1 mother.

c. Hence, as we are unable to replace our population, we will have to depend on migrants that can immerse into our culture and be part of us as new citizens.

d. Else we won't be able to find enough workers to run business, do jobs, keep investors coming to invest and make our economy running and prosperous.

Else we won't have enough soldiers, police, home team to protect our country, our people.

Else we won't have enough young people to take care of the elderly.

Else our business, retail, f&b etc has no large enough domestic economy and population to sell to - and our people become poorer.

e. Having the right population load is essential to ensure our country can survive and thrive.

It is not a luxury.

[1:53 pm, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: TFR

[1:57 pm, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: Contributors?

[1:58 pm, 07/06/2023] +SL: For professional horse trainer and support stuffs, RDA center, NEC and other stable can absorbed them right?

[1:58 pm, 07/06/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

As for the increase SCC conservancy charges we got to pay $72 per year or $144 we got to pay for 2 years:-

The government give us a big turkey this year, but ask to pay back a small chicken drumstick.

Again the SCC conservancy got to operate based on economic principle of income versus expenses - a viable venture.

Else all the town council are in red - they will have to close shops - due to cost factors beyond their control.

[1:59 pm, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: How about a Johore race course?

Also note, the increase in SCC are based on household - $72 additional per year.

For voucher we received, it is individual.

Eg. If a family have 4 persons who qualifies eg. Lately the col voucher, $500 x 4 = $2,000 versus $72 we got to fork out

Not even counting the $500 we received from SCC rebate.

Hence before we get emotional and get work up - we got to do the sum first.

It was recently announced that the Singapore Turf Club (STC) site in Kranji will be returned to the Government by March 2027 due to land constraints and the dwindling spectatorship at the track on race days. The closure also marks the end of over 180 years of horse racing in Singapore and the final horse race meeting will take place in October 2024 for the 100th Grand Singapore Gold Cup.

Mindset changes maybe affected by thoughts, social behaviors, families, experiences, religion, etc. If the right thing to do is to accept the behavior or cultural change. Society must be willing to accept the social cost, economic cost, and other impacts associated with the change. These type of changes take a long duration. There are sufficient time to react and cushion the impact.

[2:35 pm, 07/06/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Look like Singapore solutions to quantum computing to protect our current banks, military, home security, business and individuals - are on building a Telco grade quantum network to enwrap and encapsulate traditional IP network - through quantum encryption and key distribution.

A very smart approach.

Else every organisation will have to replace their traditional IP network with quantum computing and network.

A tremendous cost, plus we have to retrain all computer science engineers to become quantum computing engineers - a nightmare and a Hercules task.

[2:39 pm, 07/06/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

Now, only the Telco engineers need to be retrained as quantum computing engineers - a more viable option.

[2:42 pm, 07/06/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

In fact this approach to quantum computing, the 1st time I see and hear from Singapore.

Didn't read it anywhere from foreign news and science journal.

Kudos and good work to our digital scientists!

[2:49 pm, 07/06/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

That means if our Telcos need to connect and communicate to another country that have not migrated into quantum network, than our Telcos will need gateway to convert quantum packets back into IP packets when going into another country network.

However if other country network is quantum ready, decapsulation will be done on foreign country Telco - and data will be safer.

[3:06 pm, 07/06/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

But even if Singapore use quantum computing and encryption to protect our bank network - people will still face the same risk of scam, phishing, malware download etc.

If we are not careful by releasing our user id, password, OTP or trick into downloading malware.

Quantum encryption and network cannot protect us from identity breach or theft.

[3:07 pm, 07/06/2023] +Rama: Good point

[3:23 pm, 07/06/2023] ☸️  Danny εΏƒ:

[3:51 pm, 07/06/2023] +Joseph Yap: πŸ’¬ What are your views on the closure of the STC?

The closure for STC allows a better utilization of the land in Singapore. The low spectatorship does not justify the huge amount of land resources used. Similar considerations could be made for golf courses which serve a small group of users.

[3:51 pm, 07/06/2023] +Smiley face: Yes, it is about relationships. Only if the Turf, the Polo Club and the Riding school can all be "relocated" into Johore, it freed up lots of land for redevelopments.

Thanks, SL for the historical perspectives of HR

[3:53 pm, 07/06/2023] +SL: If the number is increasing and staying together with parents is no longer preferable, a 3gen hdb unit might no longer be necessary for the number.
