The total number of locally transmitted Covid-19 cases in Singapore rose to 12,791 on Tuesday (Feb 8), up from 7,629 the day before. There were 29 more patients hospitalised with Covid-19, bringing the number to 1,194, up from 1,165 on Monday, said the Ministry of Health in its daily update. This is the fourth day in a row hospitalisation numbers have crossed the 1,000 mark.

About 31,500 people aged 18 and above who are eligible for Covid-19 booster vaccination have yet to make their appointments as of Monday (Feb 7). From Feb 14, they will no longer be considered fully vaccinated, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said in a statement on Tuesday (Feb 8). Instead, their vaccination status will change to "additional dose needed".

💬 Have you made your appointment for COVID-19 booster vaccination yet? Why or why not? How can we better protect one another and play our part in the fight against the pandemic?

The vaccination status change will also apply to those who received three doses of the Sinovac-CoronaVac or Sinopharm vaccine, as well as regimens of other World Health Organisation Emergency Use Listing vaccines. These include those who have received one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, or two doses of the AstraZeneca, Covishield, Covaxin or Novavax vaccines. The ministry said it has been progressively sending out SMS reminders to these people.

Those who are medically ineligible for mRNA vaccines may consider taking the Sinovac-CoronaVac vaccine as a booster vaccine, MOH said. Otherwise, it is not recommended as a booster vaccine. Those who are unsure if they require a booster vaccine can visit MOH's online calculator at this website (https://go.gov.sg/mohcheckfirstcalculator) to check if they are required to receive a booster shot. Walk-ins to vaccination centres are available from Mondays to Thursdays before 7pm. The list of vaccination centres can be found at this website (https://www.vaccine.gov.sg/locations-vcs).

Children aged 5 to 11 currently have the highest rate of Covid-19 infection here, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said on Tuesday (Feb 8). Mr Ong said that while hospitals may not currently be stressed in the same way as during the Delta wave, there is a need to ensure there are sufficient paediatric beds. This is because the Omicron variant is more likely to infect children than the Delta variant, he added.

The infection rate for children aged 5 to 11 is currently about 67 per 100,000 population, said Mr Ong. Those aged 12 to 19 have the next highest infection rate, at about 55 per 100,000. "This is quite different as compared to during the Delta wave, which mostly infected older adults," the minister said.

Fortunately, said Mr Ong, hospitalisation of children due to Covid-19 is often precautionary in nature, with short stays of about two to three days. "Notwithstanding, it is important to get them vaccinated to protect them against the risk of severe illness should they get infected," he added. Mr Ong emphasised that vaccines and booster shots continue to make a significant difference to the clinical outcomes of infected individuals.

[10:24 am, 09/02/2022] +JC: I'm curious why there is a need to ward children as a precaution - can MOH share more data on how many of these precautionary cases turn out to be those cases that indeed require hospitalization?

I'm asking as this may invariably lead to shortage of hospital beds given that Omicron will b spreading widely in the community. Given that hospital capacity is e main concern now, we should perhaps optimize the protocol for warding and minimize unnecessary precautionary warding of children.

[10:25 am, 09/02/2022] +JC: If parents can be provided with the right instructions and to look out for the key signs that point to a case that requires hospitalization, we can save much needed bed space in the hospital.

[10:55 am, 09/02/2022] +Uncle Law: Perhaps MOH could give clear guidance on which situation to visit a GP or to A&E

[11:10 am, 09/02/2022] +Angelica: I thought MOH mention only visit A&E when symptoms are severe (chest pain, uncontrollable breathing, breathlessness), if not visit GP.

[11:11 am, 09/02/2022] +Angelica: Only took my booster because I’m ‘forced’ to do it, if not lose vaccination status and can’t go anywhere

[11:12 am, 09/02/2022] +Angelica: I don’t see why we are still forcing upon more vaccination and booster shots when there are other case studies (Israel) that show it’s not slowing down transmission of covid variant like omnicron. And most ppl alr vaccinated to prevent against hospitalisation

[11:13 am, 09/02/2022] +Uncle Law: Don't recall seeing

[11:15 am, 09/02/2022] +Angelica: Here

[11:15 am, 09/02/2022] +Joseph: I don't see why it is so difficult for some people to understand something so simple....that the vaccines are meant to reduce the severity of the symptoms when you catch the virus. It cannot stop someone from catching it.

[11:16 am, 09/02/2022] +Uncle Law: Can't access

[11:16 am, 09/02/2022] +Angelica: 📢 Topic 📢

Singapore reported 7,639 new local Covid-19 cases on Sunday (Feb 6). The number of people hospitalised with Covid-19 rose to 1,074 cases, up six from the 1,068 cases on Saturday, said the Ministry of Health in its daily update. This is the second day in a row hospitalisation numbers have crossed the 1,000 mark.

Paxlovid, new oral antiviral drug for treating Covid-19, has been approved for use in Singapore, with the first batches expected to arrive this month, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) on Thursday (Feb 3). "This is the first oral tablet approved in Singapore for the treatment of mild to moderate Covid-19 in adult patients who are at high risk of progression to severe disease, to reduce the risk of hospitalisation and death," said HSA. HSA said those at higher risk of severe Covid-19 illness will get priority for the drug.

💬 How do you feel about the current COVID-19 situation? If you contract COVID-19, would you consider taking Paxlovid if it is made available to you? Why or why not?

Hospital emergency departments are currently seeing a high number of patients resulting in long queues and waiting times, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said.

MOH advised the public to seek medical treatment at a hospital’s emergency department only for serious or life-threatening emergencies, such as chest pain, breathlessness and uncontrollable bleeding.

“This allows those with severe illness in need of emergency care to be attended to quickly. It also helps to preserve our hospital capacity for those who truly need acute hospital care,” added the ministry.

Should individuals require COVID-19 testing or review for symptoms of acute respiratory infection, they can visit Public Health Preparedness Clinics (PHPC) for further assessment. More than 700 of such clinics are open after office hours on selected days, said MOH. There are also six paediatric swab centres which support paediatric swabs for children aged six years and below, of which four are open after office hours on selected days.

What’s the difference in protection against Omicron between 2 doses and 3 doses of vaccine?

https://theconversation.com/whats-the-difference-in-protection-against-omicron-between-2-doses-and-3-doses-of-vaccine-176447

[11:22 am, 09/02/2022] +Angelica: I’ve also heard ppl who had all 3 doses and got q sick from covid. So...

[11:22 am, 09/02/2022] +Uncle Law: But also subjected to individual reaction

[11:22 am, 09/02/2022] +Uncle Law: Yes

[11:22 am, 09/02/2022] +Joseph: And also very clear difference in terms of severity of symptoms when compared to friends of similar age/health who did not take the booster jab

[11:25 am, 09/02/2022] +Joseph: Sure.. and of course it "makes sense " for some to take the risk ... listen to hearsay/unverified "persons/experts" on social media .. but doubt the science/medicine/real medical experts 🙄

[11:25 am, 09/02/2022] +Angelica: But all this severity of symptoms still transverses the range of mild no? Not serious until hospitalisation

[11:29 am, 09/02/2022] +Joseph: And you are so sure that you will be not be the 0.01% who might develop severe symptoms? Why? And what if it were another variant other than Omicron that might cause severe symptoms in a higher % of people? Anyway, I do agree with you that the Govt should not force people to take anymore vax/boosters.

Stop wasting our national resources ... we need natural selection to do its job

[11:31 am, 09/02/2022] +Uncle Law: They did not force. Just that they regulate certain policies to make it look like it's mandatory

[11:31 am, 09/02/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

1. My whole family members get full vaccination + booster.

2. My extended family members and siblings families members also either get full vaccination + booster or have registered for booster.

3. My private chat group also get full vaccination + booster.

[11:31 am, 09/02/2022] +Angelica: Yes

[11:32 am, 09/02/2022] +Sunshine Pooh: Honestly for me i feel 3 shots is enough. otherwise the danger of falling into 'forcing' 6/9mthly booster shots prevails. esp in light of new variants being emerging. a line has to be drawn

3 dose good enough.

[11:35 am, 09/02/2022] +Sunshine Pooh: pre-covid i am sure quite a large grp of pple do pass on due to pneumonia... so how different is omicron or any new variant

[11:36 am, 09/02/2022] +Sunshine Pooh: we just have to consider this virus like flu... go for annual jabs and move on with lives

Omicron: 10 things scientists have decoded about human immunity.

Immunologists have said that it is not surprising that immunity against Covid is getting waned in a few months as that is supposed to happen.

But protection from 3 jabs (including booster) - will last for very long.

[0:05 pm, 09/02/2022] +Joseph: Not really lah, unfortunately 😅

The current version of the vaccine wanes quite quickly... at least from observing the severity of symptoms relative to last jab amongst my household members.

According to the Doctors (and science), fully vaxxed + recovered from CV > fully vaxxed > partially vaxxed > unvaxxed

[0:12 pm, 09/02/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

I think so far, those people whom I know with 3 jabs are not infected despite close contact with infected ones.

Lucky for all of us.

But despite 3 jabs, we are still very cautious to observe safe distancing measures.

[0:13 pm, 09/02/2022] +Rama: Agree

[0:15 pm, 09/02/2022] +Joseph: Quite a few close friends and relatives with 3 jabs also got infected. Myself included. But symptoms were really mild compared to some family/friends who only took 2 jabs .. more severe symptoms.

[0:17 pm, 09/02/2022] +Uncle Law: The 2 jabs is subjective, it could be their 2nd jab were quite some time back

[0:17 pm, 09/02/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

3 jabs are still the best solution to date.

But still have to observe safe distancing measures to stay safe

It is not foolproof, but the best solution so far.

[0:18 pm, 09/02/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

Like hep b that needs 3 jabs.

Covid vaccination also needs 3 jabs for our immunity system to develop long term protection.

Though not 100% foolproof - but strong protection foundation.

[0:22 pm, 09/02/2022] +Smiley face: https://youtu.be/DDJB0NcRpOQ

[0:23 pm, 09/02/2022] +Joseph: Yes. Exactly why i said my observation is that the effects of the vaccine wanes quite quickly

[0:27 pm, 09/02/2022] +JC: At some point, as we move towards COVID being endemic, COVID vax should be like Flu vax -> allow individuals to self assess their own risk and make a decision for themselves, using their own money.

[0:30 pm, 09/02/2022] +JC: Some think 0.01% (i.e. 1 in 10,000) chance of severe illness is not worth the bother/cost of getting jab. That's their decision. Especially since Paxlovid is now available, the argument that vaccination is absolutely necessary to protect the more vulnerable is not as compelling as it is during the pandemic phase.

[2:44 pm, 09/02/2022] +REACH: Dear Contributors

We’d love to hear more from you on today's topic 😊

We have had good feedback and hope that we can keep the discussion robust and active!

Megan

[2:53 pm, 09/02/2022] +BL: Have you made your appointment for COVID-19 booster vaccination yet? Why or why not? How can we better protect one another and play our part in the fight against the pandemic?  If people are having doubts about needing it, or about the risk from it, then Gov can post some stats - lower hospital rates, lower deaths from Covid. How many hospitalisations and serious illnesses from the Booster? Be good to know, maybe none.... Remove the FUD to get people to vaccinate!

[2:54 pm, 09/02/2022] +BL: It couldn't be made easier to get the jab. Although the following day most people are a bit tired (I was) I didn't feel ill.

[2:55 pm, 09/02/2022] +BL: Is it possible the increased infections are due to the antibodies wearing off? Yes probably. The body still fights the infection, just takes a day or more to kick in.

[2:55 pm, 09/02/2022] +BL: Does the booster jab prevent infection? Not 100% but speeds up the bodies defences considerably to stop the infection taking hold.

[2:56 pm, 09/02/2022] +BL: Maybe having a walk-in booster option is backfiring because without having to make an appointment, people don't get around to doing it?

[2:57 pm, 09/02/2022] +Uncle Law: Don't think so

[2:57 pm, 09/02/2022] +Uncle Law: If ppl wants to get boostered, they will go

[2:58 pm, 09/02/2022] +Uncle Law: Even with appt sms sent to them, they may not want to book if they have no wish to go ahead

[3:00 pm, 09/02/2022] ☸️  Danny 心:

My family members all do walk in booster.

Didn't book in advance.

Very convenient.

[3:07 pm, 09/02/2022] +Joseph: I observed that some of my friends, family and acquaintances hesitating when it came time to take the booster. Some are parents who were unsure whether to send their 5-12yos for vax. These people are not anti-vaxxers and in fact had always been in the pro=vax camp.

I think the combination of fatigue, doubt and overconfidence is creeping in.

Does not help that we have a very vocal anti-vax minority (locally and globally) who have been more successful and relentless in promoting and spreading their (misguided) message. The G/MOH needs to be more effective in those same platforms to counter those lies/misinformation.

[3:10 pm, 09/02/2022] +jimmy chew: We want to believe what we want to believe, the reality of life 🤣

[3:12 pm, 09/02/2022] +jimmy chew: My belief let the anti-vax do what they want. There is less anti-vax folks around when they die of COVID. Just don't overload the hospital system for the rest who needs treatment like cancer patients etc

[3:15 pm, 09/02/2022] +jimmy chew: Like one America guy indicated if anti-vaxers get covid don't go to hospital because his wife who needs to do camo therapy can't do it because of the hospitalized anti vaxers

[3:15 pm, 09/02/2022] +Joseph: Agree 👍

[3:17 pm, 09/02/2022] +BL: Does that mean we don't treat unvaxxed covid patients in hospital?

[3:19 pm, 09/02/2022] +Joseph: Not so heartless lah .. but if they are the kind who have no valid reason to be unvaxxed, then, I would support any initiative that puts these people on the lowest priority when it comes to treatment of CV-related ailments .. and no Govt/taxpayers' subsidies.

[3:21 pm, 09/02/2022] +jimmy chew: Yes. If covid related 🙏

[3:22 pm, 09/02/2022] +BL: That's a hard sell... maybe insist on payment up front and a private room.

[3:24 pm, 09/02/2022] +Joseph: maybe give them some Ivermectin pills and send them home? 😂

[3:25 pm, 09/02/2022] +JC: Trying to do a thought experiment here... if lets say there is a vaccine for heart attack that carries a very small risk of impotence. If every male citizen takes the vaccine, we will be able to reduce the hospital capacity required to treat heart attacks significantly. Assuming that the scientific data for this is 100% proven and guaranteed to work. Should we then penalize any male citizen who refuses to take the vaccine and if he gets a heart attack, he should be deprioritized for treatment and/or barred from subsidies?

[3:26 pm, 09/02/2022] +RH: I rcv the sms + 1 reminder.

Didn't think it was 'time' to get booster yet...  At the time I got 1st sms, it was exactly 5 months fr my first jab.

I personally felt it was too soon.

I also had annual flu jab coming up at tt time.

So,  I timed it such tt I took my flu jab first,  then go for booster.

Only to realise now,  they wl change the Vax status after 14 Feb!!  🤦🏼‍♀️

So, we'll see how after tt,  as my booster is booked for late Feb,  abt 6.5 months fr 1st jab...  !

🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

[3:29 pm, 09/02/2022] +Joseph: Not a good comparison since Heart Disease is more lifestyle related ... but if the incentive is that you get to pay lower insurance premiums for showing that you lead a healthier lifestyle then I think it would work/make sense... oh wait .. we already do that 😉

[3:29 pm, 09/02/2022] +jimmy chew: If heart attacks happens at 10k a day. Then yes

[3:30 pm, 09/02/2022] +jimmy chew: Because taking it would reduce hospitalizations

[3:30 pm, 09/02/2022] +jimmy chew: And overloading of resources

[3:31 pm, 09/02/2022] +Joseph: Actually if the Heart Disease is allowed to progress .. it will eventually lead to impotence as well 😅

[3:31 pm, 09/02/2022] +jimmy chew: More nurses and doctors are calling it quits because of burnout

[3:31 pm, 09/02/2022] +jimmy chew: 🤣🤣🤣👍

[3:32 pm, 09/02/2022] +jimmy chew: All you reachers are so funny 👍

[3:32 pm, 09/02/2022] +KSFoong: I thought booster shot refers to the 3rd jab? Those who does not the booster is not considered complete the vaccination

[3:34 pm, 09/02/2022] +JC: Yep agree. If we are experiencing a sudden spike in heart attacks then drastic measures should apply - but more as a temporary measure, and should be lifted once the "emergency" or "pandemic" situation is alleviated.

[3:35 pm, 09/02/2022] +Joseph: impotence is no laughing matter ... the thought of it alone can make some go soft .. hard truths 😅

[3:35 pm, 09/02/2022] +JC: If the spike in heart attacks do not go down and stays permanent, then it is actually not unreasonable to expect govt to further expand health capacity as required - but this will take time.

[3:36 pm, 09/02/2022] +JC: Good point. So the correct answer is everyone should get vaxxed hahahaha

[3:37 pm, 09/02/2022] +Joseph: Alternatively... and eventually, the Heart will resolve the issue one way or another 😜

[4:18 pm, 09/02/2022] +RH: Yup.

Talking abt the 3rd jab...  sms rcv 5 months after we take 1st shot.

[4:34 pm, 09/02/2022] +Rama: Plus verbal abuse from patients,  family members and their relatives

[6:05 pm, 09/02/2022] +Jospeh Yap: Have you made your appointment for COVID-19 booster vaccination yet? Why or why not? How can we better protect one another and play our part in the fight against the pandemic?

I have completed my booster in Nov 2021, as soon as I was eligible.

We can better protect one another and play our part by encouraging friends, neighbours, colleagues and family members who have baseless fears about taking booster; and urging them to take the booster as soon as possible.

I have heard of baseless fears such as "potential stress to the heart from booster" and excuses such as "it is better to have the covid to get natural immunity".

[6:09 pm, 09/02/2022] +Anthony: The outcome of thousand of million get infection from the Omicron was the saddest part of our defence ,

I believe Vaccinated always would be plus factor

However ,it turn out to be million cases for consecutive days was unbearable to me personally

It's seems like our G or MOH are unable to dealing with this situation Omicron spike

I stil a believer ,I confidently believe G or MOH have more better plan to deal with this situation

Company already short of manpower to deal with this spike of number situation
