💬 How can we as a community play our part in tackling climate change and embracing sustainability?

To address climate change and promote sustainability, Singapore will soon launch a Green Plan, with agencies across ministries setting “ambitious and concrete targets”, said Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu in Parliament on Monday (Feb 1).

The plan will be continually refined as circumstances change, new opportunities emerge, and input is sought from citizens, businesses and communities.

More details will be announced in the coming weeks, she said, with Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat slated to speak on the Government’s sustainability agenda during this year’s Budget debates.

[11:14 am, 02/02/2021] +Fulgrim: Hahaha. Reduce road tax for electric cars

[11:20 am, 02/02/2021] +Bobby Tan: Agreed. The road tax for electric car is too high. There should be good incentive to encourage car dealers to bring in more electric car . I heard other countries all giving good incentives for electric car.

[11:25 am, 02/02/2021] +Berny: give COE rebate if they use COE to buy electric car, not sure how viable or feasible it is though

[11:29 am, 02/02/2021] +Bobby Tan: COE is the same regardless electric car. Is the incentive currently not there to buy a electric car and electric car now very expensive.

[11:31 am, 02/02/2021] +Berny: Correct, so if they use that to buy electric car, they get further incentives, on top of the existing rebate

[11:32 am, 02/02/2021] +Berny: Or maybe set a side a number of coe, specially for electric vehicle

[11:33 am, 02/02/2021] +WJ: study feasibility of replacing power plants with solar panel and battery.

[11:37 am, 02/02/2021] +Alvin: We can achieve this by a few movements.

1) Getting more ppl to give up on cars and take public. Active mobility needs to take front seat again for last mile transport. Encourage and lead EV and/or using renewal fuels.

2) Change our lifestyle by converting our food waste to fertilizer or compost. Next encourage more biodegradable bags for use. Have a recycling event where we can redeem unwanted items for crafted items using recycled materials.

3) I remember reading that sg gov have a policy where if we remove one tree, we have to plant back two in return. I hope this is the case for Dover Forest that we want to clear.

My 2.14 cents

[11:42 am, 02/02/2021] +Caleb: Should I take the COVID-19 vaccine if I have allergies? Anaphylaxis is rare, say experts https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/covid-19-vaccine-allergies-anaphylaxis-reactions-pfizer-14092506#.YBjKAdI648U.whatsapp

[11:44 am, 02/02/2021] +Caleb: Education is the key. Like the exhibits in ASM.

https://www.marinabaysands.com/museum/exhibitions/planet-or-plastic.html

[11:49 am, 02/02/2021] +Ben: There is still a climate cost though. Electric cars will be a success if we build the infrastructure.

[11:50 am, 02/02/2021] +Ben: Charging points are critical, currently there is no where to charge in HDB parking.

[11:51 am, 02/02/2021] +Ben: Boost car sharing like a blueSG, they already have a business model and it's cheaper than a cab. Some investment there would increase car supply and parking spaces.

[0:02 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: I don't know what's the hoo-hah over Dover Forest or whatever, but since my subject matter is mobility,

People keep thinking EVs will replace ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles 1-on-1 and that is not true. In fact, I have been telling people in the mobility sector that governments need to seize the opportunity and to use this current transition from ICEVs to EVs to "squeeze 'em out" ('em referring to cars)

As all of you know, I am a strong proponent of public transport and other urban mobility options aside from the conventional cars but I will keep this analysis as fair and square as possible as I see both an opportunity as well as an obstruction.

In Norway, the adoption of EVs is too damn high right now, so much so that the government has to co…

[0:06 pm, 02/02/2021] +Rama: Get involved with those who are already trying to make a difference.

[0:20 pm, 02/02/2021] +Rama: No need to check in at different shops in the same mall once TraceTogether-only SafeEntry kicks in https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/no-need-to-check-in-to-different-shops-in-the-same-mall-once-tracetogether-only-safeentry?&utm_source=whatsapp&utm_medium=social-media&utm_campaign=addtoany

[0:27 pm, 02/02/2021] +Caleb: Great. Can we start ToS now ?

[0:41 pm, 02/02/2021] +Rama: 🤷‍♂️

[1:13 pm, 02/02/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

Single-used plastics bags

1. I support lesser usage of single-used plastics.

2. But the single-used have dual used - as carrier for groceries in supermarket - they are also used to bag liquid waste and solid waste at home - else it will be a hygiene problem if housing estates dispose their waste without bagging them.

3. Hence, suggest for each trip to supermarket like NTUC, ShengShiong, Giants etc - 1st 5 bags should be free. There after charge for single-plastic bag used. This will limit 5 plastic bags per transaction - and limit the used of single-used plastic bags - but yet achieve the "dual used of single-plastic bag" to bag liquid and solid waste at home.

4. Low and middle income household - will not feel the pinch of having to pay for plastic bag in shopping for groceries in supermarket.

[1:15 pm, 02/02/2021] +Fulgrim: Revert to use banana leaves

[1:15 pm, 02/02/2021] +Fulgrim: Lol

[1:29 pm, 02/02/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

Rearing live foodstocks like cows, pigs, poultries etc - are the one of the largest source of contributors to climate change and host-based pandemics (eg. SARS, covid-19, MERs, swine flu, mad-cow disease, bird flu, HxNx, etc).

1.  The conversion of forests into agricultural land and livestock ranches is one of the major causes of deforestation. It is being done to meet the rising demand for food. Raising livestock generates 14.5 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions that are very bad for the environment

2, Scientists also has proven that virus jump host from animals to human - eg. Swine flu, bird flu, covid, SARS, H1N1 etc - due to people slaughtering of animals for food.

3. That why is urging government to spend more efforts and resources to R&D on alternative food source such as :-

a. Vegetarian food

b. Vegan base meat

c. 3D-printed vegan base meat

d. Cell culture and tissue re-engineering meat

e. Beyond meat

4. All the above suggestions will dispense with the needs to allocate big land mass (through deforestation) to grow crops to feed live animal stocks and refrain from slaughter animals for meat. Hence global climate can be protected.

5. Also, it will open up a new economic sector for Singapore - high tech agro industry and create new jobs for Singaporean.

6. The above proposal will have achieve 4 objectives :-

a. Stop slaughtering of animals for food and reduce animals sufferings.

b. Reduce the risk of pandemic base animals host to human virus infections.

c. Protect global climate by reducing the land required to clear forest to rear animals and crops.

d. Start a new high tech agro industry for Singapore and create high value added jobs to Singaporean and create export led industry on gourmet meat.

e. The above proposed agro industry will have created :-

- High tech lab for food R&D.

- Create manufacturing plants to mass produce vegan-based meat

- Food packaging, logistics, food supply chain, marketing

- Domestic food market

- Export food industry for overseas market

- Create many jobs in food R&D, high tech food manufacturing plant, logistic food supply chain, marketing jobs for domestic and overseas market

[1:30 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: 😮 Oh no 😮 not again no 😮

[1:31 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: lol

[1:32 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: Cell culture meat is not halal and may contain beef lol... depending on the serum comes from

[1:34 pm, 02/02/2021] +Fulgrim: Like it or not

[1:35 pm, 02/02/2021] +Fulgrim: It will be the future

[1:35 pm, 02/02/2021] +Fulgrim: Once the tech matures and they can scale

[1:35 pm, 02/02/2021] +Fulgrim: It will be so cheap and fast that they will put all the real food farmers out of business

[1:36 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: Not about the tech, it's about how this dude keeps repeating this NON-STOP

[1:36 pm, 02/02/2021] +Fulgrim: Ooooo

[1:36 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: Unlikely... meat is mainly consume by the rich countries... so sure still have jobs.

[1:36 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: Yes

[1:36 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: In every different form different day

[1:36 pm, 02/02/2021] +Fulgrim: With such techniques, the cost can be right down drastically

[1:36 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: 🤣🤣

[1:37 pm, 02/02/2021] +Fulgrim: It’s all these industrial farming that makes meat cheaper now

[1:37 pm, 02/02/2021] +Fulgrim: U just see how cheap salmon is now compare to say 20 yrs ago

[1:37 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: Manpower is never going away no matter how automate...

[1:37 pm, 02/02/2021] +Fulgrim: Intensive salmon farming

[1:37 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: Yah the auto cutting farm is amazing to watch

[1:38 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: But also high wastage 😓

[1:41 pm, 02/02/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

Non-fuel based alternative energy

1. Solar cell panel and other energy efficient but climate-friendly method to generate electricity for energy needs in HDB estates, private housing etc.

2. Build extra track to accomodate PMD - eg. bicycles, eletric scooter, PMA, PMDs.

3. Provide infrastructure, incentives to convert fuel cars to electric cars.

4. Roll our DCS (District Cooling System) air-con to malls, office buildings and even HDB estates, condos - to replace individual air-con installation in individual homes.

[1:44 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: Only Agree with 4.

1. Still takes time to mature

2. As now PMD has banned lol.. people culture need time to educate

3. What happen to the old cars if we abandoned totally in favor of the electric cars. Power comes from power plant, so without going on fuel. Electric becomes Monopoly by a few players.if our power grids is down no more cars moving no matter how long your battery can last it still need refuel. And EMP can easily wipe out your electric cars

[1:44 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: Clearly no one bothered to read what I typed

[1:44 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: Lol

[1:45 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: Then want to parrot ._.

[1:45 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: He clearly have a very structured message from some where sure not from phone to type so complex and always have copy lol

[1:46 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: Prepared beforehand liao lol like meeting notes liddat

[1:48 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: Should ask him go policy then see how hard is it to implement those..

and why the not so popular ones still around for so long.

Mindset cannot be change by keep repeating. Culture and education and many things need to be in place and Singapore clearly is moving slowly to try and adapt to see if it works.

But as we have seen we are not ready for many.. setup and died. Only a few successful ones. But then again never try never know

[1:49 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: Lol two pronged attack isit, I cover mobility side you cover life sciences side, he kena kiap 😆

[1:50 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: Life science I really do hope there is improvement.. hence read up quite a bit. But issues with those implementation have many things and not all are good. We only want to see the advantages but not the bad that comes with it.

[1:51 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: When the advantage outweighs the disadvantage then we can push for it

[1:51 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: Mobility also, whole world may see ours as world class but I know exactly where we went wrong but we cannot just anyhow whack, need to plan carefully one, so cannot just outright say build more lanes for AM one

[1:51 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: For now is really a playground for those ideas and create capacity for it

[1:52 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: Not wrong for them to develop, that's how we innovate - some will fail, some will succeed, it's how life is basically 🤐

[1:53 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: Hence all small small ones.. lol.. dyson is one of the big failures lol.. they trying to find replacement for the hole dyson left lol

[1:53 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: Many suppliers affected by that..

[1:54 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: Dyson die son lol greatest scam of all time sia but I know there's this thing called SGInnovate that focuses on deep tech, you heard of them before?

[1:55 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: Not really, didn’t read much on that..

guess similar to pharma require high skilled and infrastructure. Not easy to move kind

[1:56 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: Yeah it's a relatively new thing, but SGInnovate is good imo, they had incubator sessions with Hyundai/KIA

[1:58 pm, 02/02/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

1. If the world collaborate - the world will have reduced the onslaught of Disease X.

[1:58 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: Many innovations means money pump in with tax free.. but similarly when money run dries some of them just move out like example GE,Novaties etc

[1:59 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: Create jobs but no more not always have many stayed as other countries can do the same so if our people don’t learn and do those jobs we never gain from paying those companies to come

[1:59 pm, 02/02/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

Singapore is so advanced in innovation - precisely of great vision - the hallmark of tech innovation.

[1:59 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: Our guys just not brave enough to setup companies to tap on such talents

[2:00 pm, 02/02/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

A country will never progress - without vision, foresight and courage.

[2:01 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: I think another problem is also the local talent pool lol like macam no talent liddat tbh 😆

[2:04 pm, 02/02/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

1. And reverse the effects of global climate.

[2:05 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: Have but no guts.. not many dare to join start up I myself included

[2:06 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: Actually you're also correct, most locals are basically shy, afraid to try new things as well

[2:06 pm, 02/02/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

And start another big economic sector for Singapore - the high tech agro food technology sector.

Which can fetch billions of dollars and job growth.

[2:09 pm, 02/02/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

1. That can ensure food security in our domestic market like water security.

2. Can prevent fluctuations in food price like chicken die in queue, lockdown by overseas countries, climate change reduce food stocks like dry land cannot grow crops, etc.

3. Grow sufficiently can even export to overseas markets.

4. Boost our GDP.

[2:10 pm, 02/02/2021] +Rama: Govt 'will not hesitate to use the full force of the law' on vaccine-related misinformation: Iswaran https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/singapore-law-covid-19-vaccine-fake-news-14094220#.YBjssd5h0pY.whatsapp

[2:10 pm, 02/02/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

Disinformation found in internet and social media about the vaccines safety is the greatest obstacles to gain public trust in getting public to get vaccinated.

https://www.todayonline.com/voices/overcoming-public-distrust-vaccines-requires-engagement-and-authentic-dialogue

[2:13 pm, 02/02/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

Disinformation is an asymmetric warfare started in US - by Trump and his conspiracy groups to want to secure his re-election.

Anti-vaccines disinformation websites news are meant to sabotage Biden administration.

Unfortunately, the world unwittingly read such conspiracy news - and sabotage our efforts to vaccinate our population to defeat the covid pandemic.

[2:20 pm, 02/02/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

Disinformation use half-truth, total lies, misinformation etc - to prey on the fear of people, especially vaccines which are new - to create confusion, unrest and distrust of public institutions and government to save the public from the pandemic.

Pandemic is a "world war albeit biological one cause by nature that bring mass death and global economic collapse".

And disinformation websites is an asymmetric warfare trigger by unscrupulous politicians and gullible people who read it, and propagate it out of good intentions but in fact aiding the heinous politicians.

[3:01 pm, 02/02/2021] +Rama: Sgd100 billion set aside.

[3:34 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ben: Great news! An major incentive to encourage everyone to switch to TT asap.

[4:18 pm, 02/02/2021] +Dan: Dover Forest is more than planting trees. The ecosystem in Dover Forest will be affected. You can relocate trees, but can you relocate the wildlife found in Dover Forest? What is going to happen is that you see otters killing koi fish, wild boars smashing down glass doors and monkeys attacking people. Please do not tear down the homes of these wildlife as they are part of this ecosystem too.

[4:37 pm, 02/02/2021] +Dan: We have many recycling drives yet the infrastructure to support recycling in our homes are too simplistic, and many people have been mis-using the bins. We have a big recycling bin for all recycling items. I'm heartened to see Ikea providing recycling bins in their stores. Our public infrastructure should at least do the same.

Example, different days to collect recycleable wastes eg. Mon- papers, wed- Cans, Fri- plastic bottles. Glass to be collected separately as they are easily breakable. The recycling vending machines will also be a good idea.

[4:38 pm, 02/02/2021] +Rama: People's mindset towards recycling and the environment needs to be tweaked

[4:39 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: Wonder how can we improve this... we are first world country with third world mindset lol

[4:40 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: Specially with baby.. the trash created is just so much 😓

[4:42 pm, 02/02/2021] +Rama: Agree

[4:43 pm, 02/02/2021] +Rama: Returning of trays and utensils is one example.  Recent programme on mediacorp channel 5 featuring diana ser as a cleaner is an example.

[4:45 pm, 02/02/2021] +Rama: Cleaners are employed to clean up my mess!

[4:46 pm, 02/02/2021] +YT: About time the government stepped up. So much misinformation out there and so many idiots spreading them.

[4:47 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: We totally need a complete overhaul when talking about recycling

[4:52 pm, 02/02/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

1. It is unfortunate for some rare few that will react to adverse reactions on vaccination.

But it is not life threatening if given immediate treatment.

2. Recovery is within 1 day upon given anti-allergy treatment.

3. At the same time, the rare few develop anti-bodies and protect themselves against the covid virus.

4. Also they will get $10,000 as compensation.

[4:54 pm, 02/02/2021] +Rama: 5. Sgd225k if permanent disability or death.

[4:54 pm, 02/02/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

Hope no one needs that.

[4:55 pm, 02/02/2021] +Rama: Yes

[4:55 pm, 02/02/2021] +Rama: I rather taste sgd10k!

[4:55 pm, 02/02/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

5. Contracting covid-19 is more damaging to health than vaccination.

[4:57 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nicolette Tan: by the time 10k is quite serious alr: “It provides a one-time payout of up to S$10,000 if a person is hospitalised in a high dependency or intensive care ward but subsequently recovers”

[4:59 pm, 02/02/2021] +Rama: True

[5:14 pm, 02/02/2021] ☸️  Danny 心:

1. If people don't vaccinate, there is a constant fear that one day, he/she will contract the covid-19 - when the majority get vaccinated.

2. This will be the greatest motivation for people to overcome their fear to get themselves vaccinated - to protect themselves and their love ones.

3. Else life will no longer be the same for them ever after.

[5:18 pm, 02/02/2021] +Rama: Procrastination will not help in the long run.

[5:22 pm, 02/02/2021] +Dan: My father-in-law aptly describes this as striking 4D.

[5:23 pm, 02/02/2021] +Ken: 😅

[5:31 pm, 02/02/2021] +Dan: Yes. Lets start with more infrastructure to support recycling.

[5:33 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: But you remember that old news saying how recycling isn't that useful after China stopped accepting stuff for recycling or something?

Don't remember much but I think NEA has done a really good job advocating for recycling so we definitely can do more

There's this working group on recyclables or something too but I didn't get in lol

[5:38 pm, 02/02/2021] +Dan: Yes. The key to climate change is still with reduce, not recycle. The waste that Singaporeans generate is alarming. All the buffet promos and cheap online purchases (double 10, double 11 and double 12). I have friends telling me abt the purchases they made during these shopping spree and they regret buying it or buying it in case they need it in future. We really need to develop the Konmarie mentality when we make purchases.

[5:39 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: Actually many paid surveys out there focus on reducing too, asking if one prefers cheap clothes that last a few months or expensive clothes that last for longer

[5:58 pm, 02/02/2021] +Dan: But then again, recycling is a necessary phase before reduce. Citizens will then have a better knowledge on which are the items that can are commonly recycled( type 1 PETE and type 2 HDPE). And hopefully,  people will try to make a conscious effort in reducing plastic bags in supermarkets after involving in recycling. At least students gain their understand through these recycling VIA. And if any of your children or family members try to initiate this because he/she did this in school, kudos to them.

[5:58 pm, 02/02/2021] +Rama: You have a point

[5:59 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: Can also increase awareness of those volunteer stuff like the what repair kopitiam or whatever it's called

Focus more on how one can salvage things rather than throwing them away

[6:02 pm, 02/02/2021] +YT: I agree. When I was growing up in the 70s, and 80s, people repair things. I remember my parents calling for repairmen to come and fix washing machine, TV, and even the ceiling fan at home. Nowadays, it's a throwaway culture. People don't bother repairing. And I believe the big manufacturers have a role in this. They have made it so expensive to call for a repairman that people would rather throw out and buy a new appliance than to repair. It's sad, but where's the corporate social responsibility there? Then these big companies turn around and announce they are environmentally friendly etc., Stand back a little and you will see the game they are playing.

[6:03 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: Lol I heard those traditional TV karang guni also don't want liao 😂

[6:04 pm, 02/02/2021] +YT: Yes! Some evrn asked me to pay them to take away when I had to replace my TV recently. And it's not even a very old model. Flat screen kind, mind you!

[6:06 pm, 02/02/2021] +Rama: My sentiments too.

[6:06 pm, 02/02/2021] +Nats: They want smart TV sia, unimaginable!

[6:44 pm, 02/02/2021] +Dan: We need to encourage companies to be environmental friendly. I rem seeing an article somewhere about grading the companies whether their products are eco friendly. And the consumers support the companies that actively participates.
