Shanghai finds 6,000 new Covid-19 infections as financial hub’s caseload grows

It records its highest daily tally of current outbreak, after steady rise in recent days

5.7 million residents of the city’s Pudong New Area are under a four-day lockdown, with Puxi set to follow

1. Zero covid strategy won't work against Omicron - as the transmission rate R0 >10. The transmission will be too rapid and can spread easily. Not possible to achieve a zero interaction among the people - as Omicron can spread within a compound.

2. It will impose heavy penalty on :-

a. Economy - where lockdown is difficult to stop the "stealth" and "fast spreading" Omicron - but exact a heavy price on business, trade and jobs, not to mention social price paid by the people.

b. Also Omicron attack the nasal and windpipe first before it go to the throat after a few days. Notice that many China test swab the throat instead of the nose. Also, what a person eat or drink can contaminate the saliva - unlike nasal fluid. There will be many false negative in the test - and Omicron will spread quietly and rapidly.

c. The infection outcome in China demonstrate that despite the zero covid strategy, infection cases still keep multiplying.

3. Hence what covid strategy should China adopt?

a. Get mRNA as a booster - for the population vaccinated with (1 or 2 doses of inactivated virus vaccines).

b. If more than 90% over of the population received a full vaccination and a 3rd mRNA booster - Omicron will become a mild illness - with lesser chance of hospitalisation or serious illness.

c. Instead of whole city lockdown, then only those infected will need to isolate at home and wait for 7days to recover. The city can continue to operate as those infected are only experiencing mild symptoms that can recover by themselves.

d. By doing so, business, trade, jobs and even travelling is possible as long as people are fully vaccinated and boosted.

e. Many Countries have been operating on this mode - without taking the stringent measures of zero covid lockdown - that exact tremendous pain on the business, trade, travel, business and social hardship.

[10:00 am, 28/03/2022] +REACH:๐Ÿ“ข Topic ๐Ÿ“ข

Daily Covid-19 cases and hospitalisations in Singapore has fallen to 4,848 and 694 respectively on Sunday (March 27), down from 6,434 cases and 731 hospitalisation cases on Saturday. The number of new cases is the lowest since Feb 3, which had 4,297 cases.

As Singapore moves towards a new phase of living with Covid-19, there will be key changes to safety-management measures implemented from tomorrow (29 March).

๐Ÿ’ฌ What are your views on the current COVID-19 situation? How do you feel about the easing of COVID-19 safe management measures?

Some of the changes include:

➡️Gatherings will be doubled from the current five persons to 10 people for mask-off activities. The maximum number of unique visitors per household will also be adjusted from five people at any one time, to 10 at any one time.

➡️ Wearing masks outdoors, although encouraged, will be optional. But indoors, masks will still be mandatory

➡️Groups of up to 10 fully vaccinated people will be allowed to dine at food and beverage (F&B) establishments. The current restriction in F&B establishments on the sale and consumption of alcohol after 10.30pm will also be lifted.

➡️Up to 75 per cent of employees who can work from home will be allowed to return to their workplaces

➡️ Capacity limit for larger events and settings - those with more than 1,000 people - will be raised to 75 per cent.

➡️Live performances and busking will be allowed to resume at all venues, including F&B establishments. Vocalisation activities by large groups will be allowed as long as masks are worn throughout the activities.

➡️ A second booster dose is recommended for those who are medically susceptible to severe Covid-19. They will maintain their vaccination status even if they do not take the second booster dose.

➡️All fully vaccinated travellers can enter Singapore from March 31, with just a pre-departure Covid-19 test. There will also be no more quota on daily arrivals and no entry approval needed for all vaccinated travellers.

➡️No more Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) ferry services and on-arrival tests for travellers to Singapore by sea from April 1.

[10:41 am, 28/03/2022] +BL: Happy to see progress, but now it's time for simplification. I still cannot see my kid play football, because the venue has not been 'approved' - its a stadium. All the parents stand outside together to watch through the fence. It's stupid. I am using that as an example of why too many nuances, details, FAQs etc are confusing, unnecessary and ineffective. Masks on inside, Masks off outside. That should be all we need now.

[10:47 am, 28/03/2022] +jimmy chew: I thought they simplify the rules? Outside -  no masks. Inside - masks. Can't think of any simpler?

[10:48 am, 28/03/2022] +BL: If that was the only rule then it would be simple, yes

[10:48 am, 28/03/2022] +BL: There are still many other rules lol

[10:49 am, 28/03/2022] +jimmy chew: Those are in-between covered and open ๐Ÿคฃ

[10:49 am, 28/03/2022] +BL: Not just about masks, but other rules as well.

[10:49 am, 28/03/2022] +BL: Why 10 people at dinner for example?

[10:53 am, 28/03/2022] +jimmy chew: For weddings. Collect Ang pow ๐Ÿคฃ

[10:58 am, 28/03/2022] +BL: I'm just saying that things are good, and handled overall well. Let's avoid making lots of detailed rules for every possible scenario.

[11:00 am, 28/03/2022] +WJ: I think it's good timing for easing the safety measures.

[11:07 am, 28/03/2022] +RH: We r a multi-faceted community.

meaning: too many different types of ppl to please....

Hence,  err on the side of caution w so many diff rules for so many scenarios.

I can appreciate how difficult it is to try to please 'everyone'.

Let's just take wat we need from the list, can?   ๐Ÿ˜‰

[11:57 am, 28/03/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Very happy to note that 5 person per table is allowed for hawker centre and coffeeshops for vaccinated people.

Then don't need to split the family when dining out.

[0:37 pm, 28/03/2022] +BL: ๐Ÿ‘

[0:38 pm, 28/03/2022] +BL: Having to wear a mask in the lift might encourage more people to take the stairs lol

[0:45 pm, 28/03/2022] +BL: What is funny about this, is that you wouldn't want more than that number of players participating anyway. Why go to the bother of making it a rule? Capacity Limits for Team Sport*

ActiveSG Facilities

Futsal, Hockey 5-A-Side - Maximum of 10 players on field (5v5)

Basketball - Maximum of 10 players on court (5v5)

Volleyball, Floorball - Maximum of 12 players on court (6v6)

Netball - Maximum of 14 players on court (7v7)

Flying Disc - Maximum of 14 players on field (7v7)

Softball - Maximum of 20 players on field (10v10)

Football, Hockey - Maximum of 22 players on field (11v11)

Rugby - Maximum of 30 players on field (15v15)

[0:45 pm, 28/03/2022] +me: Healthier living... More exercise, fitter body

[0:46 pm, 28/03/2022] +BL: Thay was just one example of a bunch of unnecessary rules.

[0:46 pm, 28/03/2022] +me: Singapore is a wonderful land of ironies and REDUNDANCIES

[0:49 pm, 28/03/2022] +me: Policies can never be simplified enough cos we pay so many people behind the scenes and everyone needs to add in their two cents' worth.

[0:51 pm, 28/03/2022] +BL: I wonder if there were fewer rules, people would feel less of a need to find ways around them.

[0:52 pm, 28/03/2022] +BL: Otherwise, a football game might end up with 100 people just because they want to socialise without a mask on?!

[1:40 pm, 28/03/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

1. Will still put on the mask whether outdoors or indoors - as precaution - until the pandemic is officially over.

2. The high vaccination rate plus booster in Singapore put us in good stead - to keep the population safe and yet be able to open up economically - that get us ready for endemic.

3. Notably, kudos to our healthcare experts for choosing mRNA vaccination - that give us ample protection against covid.

[1:47 pm, 28/03/2022] +XaniceAfcai: Since Sat, many of the older ppls in my areas alr self declare mask off when walking in the street, carpark, lift, etc.

For me, since we still have mask to clear n to protect our live one, we still continue to put on the mask regardless of outdoor or indoor esp at crowded places at bus stop.

I do not or can't afford any of my family to be down which will be super inconvenience to either one.

I hope ppls also will learn the responsibility of mask wearing, smm n personal hygiene but not to act blur not knowing what is indoor n outdoor etc.

[1:50 pm, 28/03/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Anyway those infected will cause the whole family to isolate at home for 7 days.

It is highly inconvenient - to get infected just because Omicron is mild.

It is not worth the risk.

Putting on the mask is already part and parcel of our lives for 3 years.

What is a few more months.

[1:53 pm, 28/03/2022] +me: Definitely, that's what this mask on and off issue is about, satisfying the desire to go mask free mostly while still maintaining safety with distance. Humans have always been tip toeing around, from the time we were kids testing waters...

[2:09 pm, 28/03/2022] +jimmy chew: Yeah. It was a good balance between safety and freedom. Taking account if it gets worse in terms of acute care

[2:40 pm, 28/03/2022] +Guillermo Cabeza: I'm pleased that we will have less restrictions from tomorrow and look forward to all of them going away hopefully in the coming months.

[3:15 pm, 28/03/2022] +BL: ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

[3:16 pm, 28/03/2022] +BL: Yes, I'm not anti mask at all. It was the best deterrent for a long time. I'm happy it's now optional outside.

[3:17 pm, 28/03/2022] +BL: I also agree that personal judgement is encouraged. When I was in Europe last year I wore my mask in crowded areas, busy streets etc, even though it was optional. On quiet roads, I didn't. Glad we can make those choices here now too.

"Don't Leave Home Without It.. Your Proof Of Vaccination/Recently Recovered"... ?"

Free & Easy Or Fuzzy & Fussy (ๅฎนๆ˜“ๆˆ–้บป็ƒฆ)?

- - annoymous

What?

The next 3Qs, which Asean/EU country will attract more visitors than the next one? Is it important to have visitors/tourists/investors while same time a set of safety measures in motion to check and to balance, this case prevention of covid infection and/or death?

Human needs time to think and converge (opposite is diverge to elsewhere), readjust and to recapture those lost opportunities like vacations, business connections and activities. One sure thing that is "we are always creatures of habit!" It is better to start now than later, what are the end goals?

1) Thailand, full mask required.

Visitors arrival into Thailand will be ferried to the prebooked hotels follow by a PCR test. The next day, with a negative PCR test result, visitors are free to move around the cities/country.

2) Vietnam, free & easy, no testing requirement and no vaccination status is required.

3) Philippines, for non vaccinated or partially vaccinated visitors/citizens, quarantine will be required. Limited Scheduled flights dedicated for the unvaccinated/partially vaccinated. At the Airport arrival, two separate lanes for the vaccinated and the unvaccinated visitors/citizens.

4) Australia, fully vaccinated visitors are welcomed into any of its port of calls. A self check ART is required, only positive result needs to be reported to the authority. For other cases, one needs to apply for travel exemption at the authority's website under the "home affairs" section.

Regardless of wherever you are heading to, please go to notarise.gov.sg to download to your smartphone and print a copy your vaccination status.

(Disclaimer, please check with the relevant country to confirm it's latest rules or any changes.)

Afterwords:

What If?

Travellers (vacationers) these days are clever lots, they compare and converge a decision to which country, which airline, which hotel, how many nites stay and what things to buy, to eat and to sightsee?

Let's talk about airlines. Besides branding, services and destinations, a two way and occasional stopovers, that's the airlines game?

Should a national air carrier decides to go inflight mask free/ personal option?  What will be the impact in terms of passengers capacity versus the other nation carriers? What if for a short time 'mask free' gimmick snatches many passengers to its side couple with a price reduction tactic from tickets, hotels and GST free shopping sprees all sponsored by its government initiated tourism board (QUIETLY)? In Michael Porter's competitive advantage of a firm/ a country clearly explained such strategic decisions that will have consequences and significance to one and to the others! It is worth thinking over if one happens to manage a fleet of big ferrying airplanes. Fact there exists a country that is losing over US$20.0 billions per month, its overall aviation sector!

[0:02 pm, 24/03/2022] +REACH: ๐Ÿ“ข Topic ๐Ÿ“ข

In a national address on 24 Mar, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong outlined changes to safe management measures (SMMs) in what he called a decisive step forward towards living with Covid-19.

๐Ÿ’ฌ What are your views on the relaxation of COVID-19 measures? How can we continue to stay safe and protect our healthcare capacity while taking further steps toward living with COVID-19?

The key measures are slated to come into effect on 29 Mar (next Tues), and are outlined below:

๐Ÿ“Œ Permissible group size to be doubled from five to ten people

PM Lee explained that Singapore is now in a position to ease restrictions, having "reached a major milestone" in its Covid-19 journey. He pointed to high vaccination levels - about 95 per cent of the eligible population in Singapore have completed the full vaccination regimen, and 71 per cent of the total population have received a booster shot.

๐Ÿ“Œ Mask-wearing outdoors to be optional

Wearing masks outdoors, although encouraged, will be optional. But indoor, masks will still be mandatory. This is because the risk of outdoor transmission is significantly lower, PM Lee said.

Safe distancing requirements will still be maintained, which means groups must maintain the one metre distance, including in masks-off situations.

๐Ÿ“Œ Three-quarters of staff can return to the office

Up to 75 per cent of employees who can work from home will be allowed to return to their workplaces.

๐Ÿ“Œ Increased capacity limit for events

The capacity limit for larger events and settings - those with more than 1,000 people - will be raised to 75 per cent, up from the current 50 per cent.

๐Ÿ“Œ Cross-border travel restrictions to be eased substantially

All travellers vaccinated against Covid-19 and children aged 12 and below will be able to enter Singapore with just a pre-departure Covid-19 test from 11.59pm on March 31. There will also be no more quotas on the number of daily arrivals and no entry approvals needed for all vaccinated travellers.

The new border policies will make the travel experience almost like that before the pandemic. The new travel scheme, named the Vaccinated Travel Framework, will replace the existing Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) scheme.

Dine out 2 per table is too restrictive.

Wonder will it increase from 2 to 4?

It will also help the f&b.

[0:19 pm, 24/03/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

Other than this, newly relaxing measures are appropriate.

But individuals still need to exercise caution and observe hygiene to prevent infection and even re-infection.

Our own health is still our own responsibility.

[1:11 pm, 24/03/2022] +Guillermo Cabeza: Why haven’t these limits been done away with altogether? It is unjust and not justified that migrant workers have restrictions in particular considering they are 1) largely vaccinated, 2) many have had covid, 3) most are very young and healthy

[1:17 pm, 24/03/2022] +BL: +

[1:26 pm, 24/03/2022] +Guillermo Cabeza: the article says that the quotas will remain in place which doesn’t make sense

[1:31 pm, 24/03/2022] +Caleb: oh, for them to go community

[1:31 pm, 24/03/2022] +Caleb: i think is to safeguard the workers, now is the community got higher infection rates then within dorms?

[1:32 pm, 24/03/2022] +Guillermo Cabeza: possibly though then why don’t I have to apply for a pass to go out since my household has not (yet) had covid? :)

[1:52 pm, 24/03/2022] +Caleb: Can have group size of unlimited? or is it typo? lol

[2:04 pm, 24/03/2022] +BL: with mask on, no limit

[3:53 pm, 24/03/2022] +YT: Yes, don't want additional ingredients in my food especially when they speak... or rather spit.

[3:57 pm, 24/03/2022] +Anthony: No more booster required, if not against the Omicron Variant

Cos really pointless

[3:57 pm, 24/03/2022] +Ken Loh: If own business… and plus no air con… try working in these condition… lucky no sweat down in ๐Ÿคฃ

[3:58 pm, 24/03/2022] +Anthony: Base on 10K daliy cases

[3:58 pm, 24/03/2022] +Ken Loh: No longer required

[4:00 pm, 24/03/2022] +YT: Sweat is extra ingredients too. Luckily they don't charge extra for these.

[4:01 pm, 24/03/2022] +BL: I get that, but equally we survived for many years without a problem. I would prefer it too, but maybe not a reasonable or fair expectation ?

[4:03 pm, 24/03/2022] +Ken Loh: Given a choice most company would prefer.. but more flexible arrangement will really depend on company now

[4:03 pm, 24/03/2022] +Anthony: So many device at home now

Do we still have to go back office for report to work or what

Wrong Move

[4:04 pm, 24/03/2022] +Ken Loh: Google, apple mircosoft all ask employees to come back

[6:54 pm, 24/03/2022] +Jun: For 3 years they wear mask so suddenly asking them to wear masks for hygiene purposes is "understanding their plight"

[6:55 pm, 24/03/2022] +BL: No mask outside is a very good step forward. Yes, it's still a bit pedantic in some places, personally I'm happy to keep wearing a mask on MRT and in a lift with other people.

[6:55 pm, 24/03/2022] +BL: I do think we need to give the kids a break.

[6:56 pm, 24/03/2022] +BL: I noticed the ministers at the press conference wer inside and  not wearing masks. Why do kids have to wear masks all day when they can mix with their friends maskless during recess?

[6:56 pm, 24/03/2022] +Jun: GG with your virtue signaling. All food handlers should wear mask/mouth guards with or without covid

[6:58 pm, 24/03/2022] +BL: So masks in retails, public transport and lifts yes.... elsewhere should be optional, even office and school.

Daily Covid-19 cases fell below 10,000 for the third time in March, with 7,859 new Covid-19 infections on Sunday (March 20), down from 10,244 on Saturday. This is the lowest daily total since Feb 7, when 7,806 new cases were recorded.

However, while the daily number of local Covid-19 cases has decreased gradually over the past week, hospitals continue to face a high volume of patients, and healthcare workers are still under a significant amount of stress.

๐Ÿ’ฌ How do you feel about the recent number of Covid-19 cases? What are your views on the Government’s efforts to ease the burden on healthcare workers? How can Singaporeans help to alleviate the pressure on the health system?

To relieve pressure on our hospital staff, and our nursing home staff who are caring for Covid-positive residents on-site, the suspension of in-person visits to all hospital wards and residential care homes will be extended a second time until April 3 this year, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) on Friday (March 18).

Health minister Ong Ye Kung explained that while there was a gradual decrease in the number hospitalised due to Covid-19, hospitals were still very busy and under stress due to the large number of non-Covid-19 related emergency department admissions.

To support the hospitals, MOH has stepped up various efforts:

➡️Beef up manpower for public health institutions with skilled medics and supervisors from Singapore Armed Forces and nursing students who are studying for their advanced diploma.

➡️Increase the number of transfers from public hospitals to Covid-19 treatment facilities (CTFs) by working with them to repurpose the facilities, consolidate their manpower so that the nurse-to-patient ratio can be improved. This allows the CTFs to be able to handle higher-risk patients.

➡️Partner various stakeholders, such as Singapore Civil Defence Force, to reduce emergency department admissions by taking clinically stable patients directly to CTFs.

➡️Divert some non-Covid-19 stable patients who require monitoring and management of their chronic conditions from public hospitals to facilities like private hospitals and the CTFs.

[10:07 am, 21/03/2022] +Anthony: Simply anyhow attitude towards reopening but the fact it's was huge number when I heard more then 10,000 daliy cases this can consider good result

Really bullshit

Frankly Speaking

[10:10 am, 21/03/2022] +Anthony: People get sick of Covid 19 or what

[10:11 am, 21/03/2022] +Ah Heng: feel abou tthe recent numbers? hahaha these numbers are just some form of mental consolation for many people ...

[10:11 am, 21/03/2022] +Ah Heng: what is the actual number is based on probability only ......

[10:12 am, 21/03/2022] +Uncle Law: MOH could step up the availability of video-consultation for COVID-19 positive patients, allowing doctors to make decision whether patients should be sent to hospital or continue with home recovery programme.

Medicine can also be made available via courier.

This way it reduces the transmission of virus in the community.

More outreach is needed to educate the public on when would be needed to visit A&E.

[10:12 am, 21/03/2022] +Anthony: G want whole island people get infected ๐Ÿ™…‍♂️๐Ÿ™…‍♂️

[10:12 am, 21/03/2022] +Ah Heng: with the numbers going like a yoyo is no doubt and surprise many are getting more reckless and heck care about safe distancing while embracing what the WEST is doing (dropping all measures but are they right)

[10:13 am, 21/03/2022] +Ah Heng: does heard immunity works?

[10:13 am, 21/03/2022] +Anthony: Up & Down like Share market๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

[10:13 am, 21/03/2022] +Ah Heng: if probably works den why take the risk... is luck we do not have kids or infant dying yet

[10:14 am, 21/03/2022] +Ah Heng: when that happens teh society will go bonkers

[10:14 am, 21/03/2022] +Ah Heng: mentioned before and again this battle is not about me me me me and self

[10:14 am, 21/03/2022] +Ah Heng: is about me u and everyone in the society

[10:14 am, 21/03/2022] +Anthony: Almost 70%+ get booster stIl people one by one death๐Ÿ™…‍♂️๐Ÿ™…‍♂️

[10:15 am, 21/03/2022] +Ah Heng: hong kong is a very good example -> because of 2 idiots who think their night out and drinks are impt, results in what we see today .....

[10:15 am, 21/03/2022] +Anthony: Are we sure vaccinated to stop the virus or just avoid death or both๐Ÿ™…‍♂️๐Ÿ™…‍♂️

[10:16 am, 21/03/2022] +Caleb: +1

[10:17 am, 21/03/2022] +Anthony: I believe our current vaccine just simply not good or strong enough to contain the Omicron

Simple as that

[10:18 am, 21/03/2022] +Uncle Law: As for the numbers published, personally I'm not so bothered.

[10:18 am, 21/03/2022] +Anthony: But no choice have to take the jab , that leave us no choice

[10:19 am, 21/03/2022] +BL: https://www.moh.gov.sg/covid-19/statistics - please read the stats. Active Cases in ICU around 15 per Million, and they are unvaccinated. There are less than 4 per Million who are vaccinated. The Country needs to move on. All these silly little stickers when you go to buy food, it's daft.

[10:19 am, 21/03/2022] +Sherie: Hopefully borders can fully reopen for trade without 7 days SHN

[10:20 am, 21/03/2022] +Anthony: Until the ✌️✌️quality✌️✌️vaccine arrive the number should look Abit better๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

[10:21 am, 21/03/2022] +BL: Half of our ICU is taken up by Non-Covid cases, the nearly half are empty. Covid accounts for around 5% of our ICU beds.

[10:22 am, 21/03/2022] +Uncle Law: To add on, via video-consultation can be supported by MOs from the SAF or doctors from specialist clinic which may not be of critical at the moment.

[10:23 am, 21/03/2022] +BL: Horrible to talk about death, but no one under 60 who is vaxd /boosted has died.

[10:24 am, 21/03/2022] +Ah Heng: many shoudl recap -> vaccinated does not block one from getting infected if reduces the seriousness of the infection

[10:24 am, 21/03/2022] +BL: *since May 2021 when 2 dose Vax programme was started

[10:24 am, 21/03/2022] +BL: Yes, I know many many people who have had covid, as I'm sure we all do. Those who are vax feel bad for 2-3 days. That's it.

[10:25 am, 21/03/2022] +BL: I've never tested postive and don't want to get it, but I accept it's a reality, like any illness. I'm really fed up with the extreme and unneccessary restrictions.

[10:25 am, 21/03/2022] +BL: People should now be able to use their own judgment, like any other risk in their lives.

[10:25 am, 21/03/2022] +Uncle Law: +1

[10:27 am, 21/03/2022] +BL: Thousands of Dollars, perhaps Millions being lost and wasted through restrictions and time spend on this - testing, processing, tracking, logging etc etc

[10:27 am, 21/03/2022] +BL: What is the point now?

[10:27 am, 21/03/2022] +BL: Turnstiles in the malls? I mean, really??

[10:28 am, 21/03/2022] +Uncle Law: This is paid by malls not gov. Is to reduce reliance on manpowe

[10:28 am, 21/03/2022] +BL: I don't understand why we need manpower at the malls to track everyone going in and out.

[10:29 am, 21/03/2022] +BL: It is paid for by the consumers ultimately as prices have to go up to cover the cost of the turnstiles.

[10:30 am, 21/03/2022] +Dan: We are desensitised to the numbers alr. But i had noticed more ambulances on the road.

[10:30 am, 21/03/2022] +BL: Maybe Dengue - those numbers are rising too, and I'm more worried about that than Covid.

[10:32 am, 21/03/2022] +BL: https://www.nea.gov.sg/dengue-zika/dengue/dengue-cases

[10:32 am, 21/03/2022] +BL: 2022 is the second worst year in the last 5 years already.

[10:32 am, 21/03/2022] +Gcml: Actually the numbers tell a small part of the story. Are there reinfected covid cases? If so, there may not be any herd immunity moving fwd.

Boosted and still getting covid, vaccines need a review or change in policy?

What about the unnecessary impact/obstacles to return to norm?

What are the concerns to be addressed? I feel we cover too many bases, the policies are cumbersome.

[10:33 am, 21/03/2022] +BL: Yes, the policies are complex and confusing. What happened to the big simplification of the policies?

[10:35 am, 21/03/2022] +BL: Just one example - Sports: https://www.sportsingapore.gov.sg/covid19 Look at the links, .pdfs, and other info you have to read !

[10:36 am, 21/03/2022] +BL: Guidelines and FAQs - if you need FAQ's about Guidelines, it's too complicated!

[11:22 am, 21/03/2022] +RH: +1

[11:34 am, 21/03/2022] +Smiley face: Events, F&B, hospitality sectors applaud eased Covid-19 rules but say recovery is limited

https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/consumer/events-fb-hospitality-sectors-applaud-streamlined-covid-19-measures-but-say-recovery-is-limited

"I think the social needs of people aren't really going to be satisfied with five people allowed at home at one time, and I'm not sure having 10 (vaccinated people) is really going to destroy hospitals," said Professor Dale Fisher, senior infectious diseases consultant at the National University Hospital, in a roundtable discussion organised by The Straits Times on Tuesday.

"We're a species that needs to socialise, we're a species that needs to work to provide for our families and to provide for our recreation," he said.

[11:36 am, 21/03/2022] +Smiley face: 95% are vaccinated, we are enforcing the remaining 5% and foreign visitors which maybe 1% or less.

It is an economics and medical issues to think about...

[11:38 am, 21/03/2022] +Smiley face: To go back to normal living means "least fussing and least guildlines". Any thing more will be regarded as moving towards normalcy.

[11:39 am, 21/03/2022] +Smiley face: Vaccines vs Virus

Who is ahead?

Who's going to win?

[11:40 am, 21/03/2022] +Ken Loh: Virus will always be ahead… they naturally mutate… vaccines are create to earn money..

[11:40 am, 21/03/2022] +Ken Loh: Hence the initiative by government to fund global vaccine development

[11:40 am, 21/03/2022] +Smiley face: Vaccine vs Virus vs Economics

[11:41 am, 21/03/2022] +Sunshine Pooh: maybe bizes have been affected and the start stop and a long list of guidelines and restrictions is so cumbersome pple are prefer to postpone events

[11:41 am, 21/03/2022] +Sunshine Pooh: even fact within the past 1.5 yrs many F&B and events companies have closed their shutters

[11:42 am, 21/03/2022] +Ken Loh: Business model… have to adapt accordingly. Can’t follow old ways of working no choice

[11:42 am, 21/03/2022] +Smiley face: Israel , Turkey, USA, UK are into the 4th dose of vaccine.

UK is recommending to age 75 and above and others whin are immune compromised.

[11:43 am, 21/03/2022] +Ken Loh: Only big companies can deal with it. Small companies have to learn to work with or without pandemic. Adapt or die out.. always been like that.

[11:43 am, 21/03/2022] +Ken Loh: We can’t find companies constantly to let them work the way they know how. Government give them lifeline to transition not for them to survive the pandemic only. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿป‍♂️

[11:44 am, 21/03/2022] +Ken Loh: Can’t fund” companies

[11:45 am, 21/03/2022] +Smiley face: Have done some figures analytics on countries ability to sustain these covid + war disruptions.

Preliminary summary suggest most country could withstand further 9-12 months of downwards economics activities which transit to GDP.

[11:45 am, 21/03/2022] +Ken Loh: One travel agency have convert totally to logistic. So really depends on individual companies decision to be relevant or continue to operate how they used to.

[11:46 am, 21/03/2022] +Smiley face: Concern is not to go into retrenchment mood...

[11:46 am, 21/03/2022] +Ken Loh: Eventually… retrenchment and reskill.. economy change over time

[11:46 am, 21/03/2022] +Ken Loh: With the carbon tax we expect more to come

[11:46 am, 21/03/2022] +Smiley face: CASH FLOW is key to survive especially this time line of covid +war

[11:47 am, 21/03/2022] +Ken Loh: One job for life really is a dream nowadays

[11:48 am, 21/03/2022] +Smiley face: cash flow.. cost.. profit

Cash flow precedes the rest...

[11:49 am, 21/03/2022] +Smiley face: The Japanese has proven since 1990s that job security don't exist unlike the roaring 1970-80s

[11:50 am, 21/03/2022] +Ken Loh: The thing is are you ready? Japanese firm, which I am in, Japanese can be redeploy from R&D to sales to production. As long as they dim a need and they learn on the job.

[11:50 am, 21/03/2022] +Ken Loh: Which is amazing, do we have the mindset to deploy in 2 weeks notice drop everything and go

[11:50 am, 21/03/2022] +Ken Loh: Cannot compare really

[11:51 am, 21/03/2022] +Uncle Law: +1 our gov is being overly conservative

[0:47 pm, 21/03/2022] +Guillermo Cabeza: Re the question on how to alleviate pressure on the medical system: If the government believes that covid type viruses will be around for the foreseeable future, then it should plan on regular vaccinations (in my view voluntary and annual like the flu shot); more 24h clinics at hospitals or elsewhere so that people can go when they are unwell and thus not end up in Emergency; more options for tele consultations and remote delivery of medicines; and most important of all a campaign to encourage everyone to get healthier given that these viruses tend to affect those with other conditions.

[0:51 pm, 21/03/2022] +Guillermo Cabeza: The campaigns which the Health Promotion Board launched in the years leading up to covid all died with covid and there are still people who are scared of exercising (with or without a mask) because they are worried they will catch covid from other people exercising. Unfortunately this means we will end up with an unhealthier population and more susceptible to covid and other diseases which will in turn put pressure on our medical system.

[2:19 pm, 21/03/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

1. The recent number of cases about 10,000 infection per day is relatively high. In other words, the R0 must have exceeded 10 - for such a high transmission rate. The only fortunate thing is Omicron seems to be relatively mild.

2. Hence not surprising, many people infected will come down with minor symptoms like running nose, sore throat, headache or even slight fever.

To alleviate the pressure and strain in Government hospitals, the following things people can do are :-

a. Do own ART test as well as for the whole family household to determine infected or not.

b. If yes, self isloate at home - if all the household members symptoms are mild.

c. If people feel uncomfortable and need medical attention, should arrange for telemediciine via Zoom call - to get doctor consultation by schedule video conferencing, get medicine through delivery - this will avoid going to public hospitals and further strain the hospital resources.

d. Arrange for delivery of groceries or food - when the whole household self-isolate at home up to 5 to 7 days - until everyone recover.

3. Government efforts to beef up medical staff from SAF, nursing students, redirect or transfer some stable patients to CTF to alleviate public hospitals to treat more non-Covid patients - is a sound move to help alleviate the pressure in public hospitals.

4. Notice that many households I know of - can recover by themselves as vast majority of the Omicron infected cases are relatively mild.

5. I believe collectively, everyone still have to hang on for a couple of more weeks - before the Omicron wave subside.

[3:11 pm, 21/03/2022] +Joseph: Observed that our SDAs mostly only know how to bully legitimate business owners but steer clear of cases such as Mask-lady whom they know will retaliate. I may be wrong, but, that’s what i have observed so far.

[3:27 pm, 21/03/2022] BL: I understand, but each of us use our judgement in our decisions, including Police, Army, Teachers, Dr, Nurses. We look at context, situation, behaviour etc to determine our course of action. Using a tape measure to see if people are a few cm under 1m, shows poor decision making and an obsession with rules.

[3:28 pm, 21/03/2022] BL: I saw someone in the bank being asked to sit down while waiting. She asked why and was told the SDA prefer it that way. She, rightfully in my mind, refused.

[3:29 pm, 21/03/2022] Guillermo Cabeza: Or perhaps the particular restaurant received a warning and didn't do anything. In any case I think it's best not to be too harsh on people doing what is a thankless job - I'm sure he would rather be doing whatever he did before becoming a SDA. Which is why the government needs to do away with F&B rules amongst other ones! A

[3:29 pm, 21/03/2022] +BL: I'm not anti SDA, and recognise they have a legitimate role. However, there is a danger of a valued service becoming abused and misunderstood.

[3:30 pm, 21/03/2022] +BL: Agreed. Time to end these rules, partly because it's now unfair on SDA to expect to enforce them!

[3:33 pm, 21/03/2022] +Joseph: Yes. Quite a few SDAs had been caught (reported in ST)  and punished for abusing their “power” and position. Am very sure even more went unnoticed.

I would like to see SDAs enforcing the rules against people who are blatantly breaking the law rather than merely bullying F&B owners because it’s easier to pick on them.

[4:32 pm, 21/03/2022] +Rama:I believe so

[4:32 pm, 21/03/2022] +Rama:Air head

[4:32 pm, 21/03/2022] +Rama:Blady nonsense

[4:33 pm, 21/03/2022] +Rama: A public example must be made of this bad hat's!

[6:47 pm, 21/03/2022] +~N: I do not feel good about the recent number of covid cases and the way reporting is worded. Crossing a million out of 5million people is 20%, and it's increasing, how is that an improvement?

The efforts seem to mainly be telling people not to go see doctor if they are not seriously sick.

You just shifted the responsibility of the consequences of opening up the economy to Singaporeans. I'm not sure, maybe Singaporeans can help to alleviate the pressure on health system by not seeing doctor? What I do think may be of help to the health system is perhaps to redeploy healthcare workers in private sector, not just GP clinics, to serve the public sector for this period of time, therefore increasing healthcare manpower short term. But I guess you can't deploy them like SAF.

[10:00 am, 18/03/2022] +REACH: ๐Ÿ“ข Topic ๐Ÿ“ข

Despite Singapore's limited direct links with Russia and Ukraine, the conflict between the two countries could impact the global economy and contribute to cost of living pressures.

๐Ÿ’ฌ How are you coping with rising prices as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine? What are your views on the Government's response to these cost pressures thus far?

Food importers, manufacturers and businesses here are starting to feel the effects and some have started raising prices. All petrol prices, in particular, rose to above $3 or more a litre last week, though pump prices have since softened this week following a global drop in oil prices and ceasefire talks between Russia and Ukraine.

Speaking at a post-Budget 2022 roundtable on 14 Mar (Mon), Finance Minister Lawrence Wong  emphasised that the Government is monitoring the situation closely and would come up with additional measures if it worsens.

Regarding concerns that merchants exporting goods to Singapore could be taking advantage of the war by increasing prices, he noted that "the majority of companies (are) highly responsible, and in fact going out of their way to offer good value-for-money products and services - like NTUC FairPrice and many others who will offer more house brands (and) help consumers stretch their dollar."

He stressed that the Government had put in significant funding in this year's Budget to help households cope, through the Household Support Package, Assurance Package and an enhanced GST Voucher scheme, which he highlighted would all come into effect very soon.

To look into unjustified price increases of daily essentials, the 13-member Committee Against Profiteering (CAP) chaired by Minister of State for Trade and Industry Low Yen Ling has also reconvened on 16 Mar (Wed).

Members of the public who wish to report unjustified price hikes using the GST increase as an excuse can do so at this website from April 1. They can also do so through a hotline or at the community clubs.

[10:03 am, 18/03/2022] +Uncle Law: Increased in fuel price will have ripple effect on goods and services. Retailers or companies would not be able to sustain long by maintaining similar price with the hike in fuel price.

Subsequently the consumers will have to bear the increased in price for goods and services.

Perhaps gov could lower the fuel tax temporary to help relieve the burden and pressure on the ground.

Even so, they are still 15 per cent to 20 per cent higher than in 2010, when Brent crude was last at the current level of US$70 (S$91.30) a barrel, and this is infuriating consumers.

Businessman Leslie Chia, 49, said he feels short-changed. "Pump prices never reflect real market crude prices," he said.

[11:06 am, 18/03/2022] +Smiley face: Was $2.00 per litre, per barrel @ US$70

Now $3.00 per litre , per barrel @ US$100

[11:14 am, 18/03/2022] +Dan: As for the committee against profiteering (CAP), its like the UN, it tries to resolve the matter amicably, but has no means of enforcement. Its wasting resources, and I can think of 4 reasons why it will not work.

1) Firstly, the price hikes vary, and may be due to other reasons other than GST increase. (Increase cost of eggs, increase cost of char kuay tiao) The businesses are merely capitalising this time to carry out the price hikes.

2) CAP relies on feedbacks. Some of the feedbacks are mere complaints from indignant customers living in olden days, where chicken rice is mere $1. Just look at FB page Complaint Singapore, u will know what I mean.

3) The range of businesses vary from ur hawker food to essential items like petrol and electricity. Not to…

[11:14 am, 18/03/2022] +Liew@SG: Indeed, i am puzzled.

And extremely concerned if our local petrol prices have been manipulated for the sole business  benefits of the few oligards.

Is our MPs and government not able to check and balance this?

What  CASE and Competition Board is doing  to guard public interest against this?

[0:17 pm, 18/03/2022] +Guillermo Cabeza: Fuel prices had already risen significantly before the war started and this has had a major impact on electricity costs for consumers and businesses. The liberalisation of the power market turned out to be a failure with cutthroat competition leaving providers unprepared (unhedged) for increases in gas prices and the result is more uncertainty especially for businesses. Given we are dependent on natural gas perhaps the government should focus on how we can secure long term supplies and think about building reserves when prices are lower (even if stored overseas or just paper reserves via long term hedges). In the short term though there doesn’t seem to be any relief in store other than the war stopping and sanctions being lifted. Govt should make sure not all the blame for rising prices is placed on the war.

[0:26 pm, 18/03/2022] +Guillermo Cabeza: I agree with the comment above that the Committee Against Profiteering is a waste of government resource. It seems to me to be a lame attempt to deflect criticism from a tax increase that is coming in an environment where price pressures are already higher. There are plenty of reasons why businesses might raise prices including: higher rents, higher input costs such as labour and electricity, or simply that they would like to make a bit more profit! And it makes sense for them to make these adjustments one-off including perhaps in sync with the GST increase. What doesn’t make sense is for the businesses to then justify the increases because of GST when they are more than the change in GST as it isn’t true (and leads to committees being set up). Where businesses have some sort of monopoly or oligopoly there should be scrutiny but this isn’t the case for the vast majority of businesses in this country where there is competition. So bottom line is the government should continue to focus on securing supplies from a variety of countries (food, energy, medicines, etc) and strengthening supply chains - this it has been doing and I think a fine job though more can be done (ie natural gas). What it shouldn’t do is create an atmosphere of blaming businesses when they have to raise prices. One related and last point: If the government were to let 100% of people back to the office and let F&B open without restrictions, many businesses would see more foot traffic and turnover and probably feel they didn’t have to raise prices as much to balance their books.

[0:34 pm, 18/03/2022] +Boon: Dear MOM, Sg rising prices should not be solely attributed to the Russian-Ukraine war - this would totally ignore that SG costs have been steadily increasing in the past years. For example, housing prices have been increasing for the past 10+years and amplified by immigration policies. Private health care costs have been increasing well before this period - without any obvious attempts to curb doctors costs. Expensive and multi months medicine prescriptions seem to serve as doctor’s annuity income, and the only visible response to has been to increase personal health insurance costs. Electricity price hikes were announced in 2021; taxi and public transportation cost increases were announced similarly announced in 2021,  foreign workers levies rebates end thi…

[0:39 pm, 18/03/2022] +Boon: Asset price and health cost increases that could be tolerated because there are options are   suddenly accompanied by multiple core living price increases in these few months that no one can escape from. Together, they create an overall sense then of “everything is costly and expensive” in Sg

[0:58 pm, 18/03/2022] +Rama: Agree

[0:59 pm, 18/03/2022] +Joseph: Look into how commercial REITs are causing rental cost increases - ANNUAL (and indiscriminate) rental increases (stated in rental contracts apparently); stipulating minimum revenue targets for tenants and unfair profit-sharing arrangements (on top of fixed rental charges) etc

Look into cause of labour shortages. When Singaporeans complained about too many “FTs”, we are not talking about low wage/blue collar foreign workers who are doing the jobs that Singaporeans do not want to do. The silly quotas set by Govt policies in this area not only cause labour costs to escalate - resulting in higher input costs for hawkers/small businesses - it also unfairly disadvantages smaller businesses. Just have to look at how F&B groups like Breadtalk Group, Hai Di Lao etc …

[1:07 pm, 18/03/2022] +Joseph: Instead of going after small businesses - hawkers/wet market stall operators, kindly investigate and do sometime about how our F&B sector is being corners by only by those few Oligopolies Groups.

[1:28 pm, 18/03/2022] +Ken Loh: ๐Ÿ˜… it is business… unless we want anti competition.

Very hard to draw this line

[1:29 pm, 18/03/2022] +Ken Loh: EMA decision was really weird with Britain as an example… this model price will only go up… I don’t know which countries pricing becomes cheaper due to free market play ๐Ÿ˜…

[1:31 pm, 18/03/2022] +Boon: Imported price increases should be expected since other countries are also beset by higher inflation - and their exporters would be pricing higher just like Singapore exporters - and costs from the continued disruptions in supply chain!

[1:32 pm, 18/03/2022] +Joseph: Monopolies and Oligopolies are anti-competitive.

Even a warped pure Capitalist Nation like the US has anti-competition laws and had clamped down on companies like Icrosoft and investigated (of suit investigating) META/FB and Google.

[1:33 pm, 18/03/2022] +Ken Loh: You look at our CASE, can’t even deal with consumer protection… you want then go head on with big corporates?

[1:33 pm, 18/03/2022] +Boon: Perhaps what Singapore need is an empowered civil servant swat team to look at increasing SG daily living cost competitiveness (in prep for a larger SG greying population in the next 5-10 years).

[1:33 pm, 18/03/2022] +Joseph: Yes, that is something that is out of our hands. But indiscriminate rent increases from Oligopolies cornering the market for prime commercial space and labour, is within our Govt/MoM’s purview.

[1:34 pm, 18/03/2022] +Ken Loh: The lemon law… is a joke… anyone use it so far?

[1:34 pm, 18/03/2022] +Joseph: as a joke ..  yes ๐Ÿ˜‚

[1:34 pm, 18/03/2022] +Ken Loh: Only government link company sort of use it… other than that… not seen anywhere else

[1:35 pm, 18/03/2022] +Joseph: CASE is a non-profit organization. Not Govt.

[1:36 pm, 18/03/2022] +Joseph: Govt can mandate all healthy 18yo males to serve in combat ie. in the event war breaks out, send you/your son/grandson to certain death … they have the mandate and ability to amend laws to improve our collective lives. ๐Ÿ˜‰

[1:37 pm, 18/03/2022] +Joseph: even FIDREC has no teeth

[1:37 pm, 18/03/2022] +Ken Loh: Think is empowered by government? ๐Ÿ˜… don’t really know what’s background

[1:38 pm, 18/03/2022] +Joseph: They have the Govt’s support in a way … it is slightly better than how the US and EU are now behind Ukraine ๐Ÿ˜‚

[1:38 pm, 18/03/2022] +Ken Loh: The digital SingPass team our NParks is one of the best develop. So far.. for the rest ๐Ÿ˜”

[1:39 pm, 18/03/2022] +Ken Loh: Lol… oh well US and EU have much more consideration..

[1:43 pm, 18/03/2022] +Joseph: There is no point of the Govt us not 100% behind it. Just like how we all have known - i know, my father knows, my father’s father also knows- how dirty unfair the accidents claim/motor insurance/workshops process is to honest motorists, and yet the Govt had been and still are turning a blind eye to that rubbish. If you and I, with no specialty knowledge or insights can understand how dirty the industry is, how is it possible that the authorities who are supposed to govern and oversee it are not aware?

[1:58 pm, 18/03/2022] +Smiley face: All of these questions,.. said the father to his son, "do you really think this Tug Of War will end sooner than you hope, that's what I have asked my father decades ago too!"

[2:03 pm, 18/03/2022] ☸️  Danny ๅฟƒ:

1. Looking at the Government policies to tackle the inflation :-

a, 6.6 billion Assurance package

b. CAP to monitor profiteering

c. Additional measures to cushion price increase

d. NTUC and some supermarkets offering housebrands

it look like able to cushion some of the impact of price increase.

2. But the price increase are very widespread - across all food stalls, goods and services.

The concern is when the prices especialy food prices go up, it won't come down - and this will badly affect the retirees, low income, middle income, unemployed and workers whose salaries have not increase.

The government relief package can only cushion the impact of the price increase for the duration of the relief - but once use up the impact will be greatly felt.

3. Also the relief has not kicked in yet, the effect of the price increases has already greatly impacted many household.

4. Other than fully relying on Government relief, household will have to take counter measures to minimise the impact of the runaway inflation :-

a. Prepared more house cooked food rather than eat out.

b. When eat out, try to look for stalls that did not increase their prices or stalls offering cooked food with affordable prices - have been doing so since many stalls across the board increase their prices rampantly - some with big jump. I no longer patronise my regular favorite food stalls - but look for others reasonably price, taste good and sufficient portion food stalls. This will send a message to food stalls that try to raise prices rampantly.

c. Instead of driving more often and use up more fuels or taking taxis - take public transport like MRTs and buses - so household can save on fuel price.

d. Use less aircon at home and instead turn on high-velocity fans - this will greatly reduced the power utility bill.

This is the only way to stay frugal and stretch our hard earned $$$.

[5:58 pm, 18/03/2022] +Rama: Russia is presenting its case to the world on the U.S. Biolabs in Ukraine— along with China, Brazil, Mexico & India, calling for an immediate investigation. U.S. DS is in a panic state, denying it & does not want an investigation.

The DS U.S. doesn’t want an investigation. 3.2 BILLION people in China, India, Brazil, Mexico & Russia — nearly half of the world’s population are calling for an investigation into the U.S. for bioweapon facilities. UN, US, Nato will be found guilty of these crimes. BIG CHANGES are happening. These entities will be dissolved.

WHO is demanding DS Ukraine to destroy the bio lab evidence because they are also complicit. It’s ALL CONNECTED.
