This yahoo report may probably not capture the significant of what 6 minutes is translated to - during peak hours.

I guess during peak hours every 2 minutes - 1 MRT will arrive.

For a 6 carriage MRT - 1 carriage will carry about 100 commuters - thus 600 commuters per car.

For 6 minutes - 1,800 commuters will be commuted - and when this is multiply by a 6 hours (peak hours - morning and evening) - the 6 minutes delay can be very substantial - as hundred and thousands of commuters will have been commuted.

This is I believe the message the Minister is trying to convey.

Eg. Sin Ming MRT crowd during peak hours build up to 600 commuters. If shorten by 6 minutes, 1800 commuters will have clear the Sin Ming MRT platform and head to Bukit Timah station.

If delay for 6 minutes, 1,800 commuters will build up at Sin Ming MRT given that this Cross Country line is a major line and is a heavily patronized interchange station where other MRT lines will be connected to this line.

Isn't a 6 minute delay significant if crowd build up - and MRT is not fast enough to clear the commuters?

  Increase the frequency of trains - means 3 more trains per 6 mins. 6 peak hours - how many more trains? What will be the cost of so many more trains?

  In interchange station, every 2 mins arrival will unload 600 commuters per train.

  So can compute the commuters traffic?

That means on top of $2 billion we pay for skirting, still have to pay multi-millions dollars more for more MRT trains to make up for the 6 minutes.

Every other stations in this MRT line is an interchange --- a good "redundant line" is build into the whole of MRT network.

This will really make MRT a resilient transport system - and can sustain a line breakdown without commuters needing to take relief bus when there is a breakdown.

This MRT line is worth it.

Mr Khaw emphasised that two possible options are still being evaluated – a 4km “direct” option that will see 2km of the line going 40 metres or 13 stories below the central catchment reserve, and a 9km option that skirts the area, which may cost an additional S$2 billion.

He added that even though the first option goes directly under the central catchment reserve, there will be no construction at the surface level, while the second option – which requires a longer tunnel – will need ventilation shafts to be constructed at the surface. Land acquisitions may also be needed for the latter option.

Based on the above assessment - it is very obvious even to a layman that - direct line going 40 meters or 13 stories down the reserve - make alot of economical sense by saving $2 billion and at the same time has least impact to the nature reserves as well as to other home owners and businesses.

Not sure why the nature groups are stubbornly harping and harping on the obvious.

Did you not read the news :-

(1) The orange line at Ang Mo Kio is packed to the rim everyday during the peak hours.

(2) The green line along Paya Lebar to Changi is also packed during peak hours

Both lines have no redundancy, this cross island lines provide redundancy to failproof against line breakdown - and make MRT more resilient.

This line also serve the high speed rail at Jurong - that will be link to Malaysia to beyond - and have link to a new seaport at Tuas for trade. This line also serve Changi Airport - a gateway to the rest of the World. This line also serve the new Punggol learning and creative hubs - the same as FusionPolis and Biopolis at One-North.

The Government has a masterplan on the Future of Singapore - we as a commonner do not have such vision and do not understand the potential future development needs for Singapore - so should not always be suspicious that the Government is doing us in.

The Government is elected to bring a good lives to Singaporeans and we should trust them.

One fully packed line like Ang Mo Kio Mrt red lines or Paya Lebar MRT green line breakdown - hundred thousands of commuters will be impacted - and this will translate into hours of lost productivity.

Now this Cross Island line is build to ensure resiliency in the MRT transport system - why people now become suspicious of the Government when the Government is trying to solve a thorny issue ---- to make the MRT resilient?

The Government has also embarked on the "Singaporean core" and has substantially reduce the foreign intake of workers - while encouraging enterprise to adopt automation - that will provide high-value jobs to Singaporeans.

The Government has also actively help Singaporeans PMETs to align and match jobs - though this will take some times as business and economy restructured - while awaiting Global Economy to recover.

So we should trust the Government that they are not deliberately hurting Singaporeans and we should work with the Government to make lives better for us and not work against the Government or become an antagonist - because it will not help either sides to become better.
